Tales of the Urban Explorer: The Brass House

After some bad navigation, we found ourselves roaming the streets in completely the wrong place and almost gave up. "Where is this bastard place", I muttered to myself after uncharacteristically marking the pin down incorrectly.

I have to give credit to @anidiotexplores who guided me around 2 miles north and up a steep and winding road to where 'The Brass House' is located.

47_IMG_8610_47.jpg

"OK so.. where the fuck are we supposed to park?" Our current location was not exactly parking friendly and I was weighing up my options.

We had to park somewhere on this single-tracked lane that looked like it was used frequently by those farmers who liked to drive up and down in their oversized tractors.

Parking at the bottom of the lane would mean a big walk up a steep hill. Not a bloody chance that was going to happen.

"I'm gonna park it here right outside the gate and bollocks to the consequences", I told @anidiotexplores trying to manoeuvre the car off the lane. There was just enough space.

It's not generally something I would do, but it seemed so remote. There were neighbours, probably very pissed off neighbours with the number of explorers who have visited here.

The Brass House is, or was very much on the Tour Bus in June 2021 when we visited.

52_IMG_8615_52.jpg

’the outside gate of The Brass House; you would think nobody has been here in decades’

"Keep down", I motioned to @anidiotexplores. I could see the house next door down the embankment and it was very much lived in.

2_IMG_8563_2.jpg

Having seen how very non-photogenic the exterior of “The Brass House’ is from other reports, it was with great anticipation I started climbing the steps which can barely be seen due to massive undergrowth.

46_IMG_8609_46.jpg

The front door was open and welcoming. Why didn’t the last lot at least close the fucking door?

4_IMG_8565_4.jpg

Oh wow..., were my thoughts of walking inside. This is a time capsule alright and right up there with Granddad's House.

5_IMG_8566_5.jpg

Heavy cobwebs, how long has it been left like this?

6_IMG_8567_6.jpg

The stores I was being told was that the brass had all been nicked from "The Brass House' already. I could see vintage toys, but little brass.

7_IMG_8568_7.jpg

How is that clock still standing upright?

8_IMG_8569_8.jpg

Did the previous owners leave the message about bumming? I think not.

9_IMG_8570_9.jpg

You can never have too much Malt Vinegar. I struggled to find it when living in America.

10_IMG_8571_10.jpg

Almost untouched; why is there a vampire cape over the fireplace?

11_IMG_8572_11.jpg

Blimey, that’s vintage. Popeye too.

12_IMG_8573_12.jpg

13_IMG_8574_13.jpg

Seriously, how many glasses and plates do you need?

14_IMG_8575_14.jpg

Buy lots of plants, ditch your house and this is what you get.

15_IMG_8576_15.jpg

16_IMG_8577_16.jpg

17_IMG_8578_17.jpg

So they had kids, and one of them was likely male.

18_IMG_8579_18.jpg

A very old-fashioned look.

19_IMG_8580_19.jpg

The sitting room took my breath away. Once again the photographs cannot do justice to being there.

20_IMG_8581_20.jpg

The colours, the decay, and yet everything is still in place… almost.

21_IMG_8582_21.jpg

There were signs of some ransacking. I’m sure things have been taken, besides all the brass.

22_IMG_8583_22.jpg

23_IMG_8584_23.jpg

I couldn’t get enough of this room and took far too many photographs while in it. Just in case some are blurry.

24_IMG_8585_24.jpg

What do you think would happen if I planted my arse on it?

25_IMG_8586_25.jpg

26_IMG_8587_26.jpg

27_IMG_8588_27.jpg

Whoever lived here liked their bric-a-brac.

28_IMG_8590_28.jpg

More of that room; I was trying to get as far back as possible to get it all in.

29_IMG_8592_29.jpg

Every great time capsule has one of these. Singer are the most common ones.

30_IMG_8593_30.jpg

The phone looks very nineties.

31_IMG_8594_31.jpg

The one is a little surreal but there’s something about it I like.

32_IMG_8595_32.jpg

Is that “The Brass House’ in happier times?

33_IMG_8596_33.jpg

34_IMG_8597_34_censored.jpg

2011, that’s potentially ten years of abandonment? The condition inside tells me it’s less than that.

35_IMG_8598_35_censored.jpg

The water bill was even older. I wish water was this cheap now? The stuff that falls from the sky is significantly more expensive today.

36_IMG_8599_36.jpg

Welsh muscle oil. My muscles were aching a little; I should have sampled this local concoction.

37_IMG_8600_37.jpg

38_IMG_8601_38.jpg

Just one more, on the way out; I could not resist. While it does look like someone shit on the carpet..., its not true.

39_IMG_8602_39.jpg

It does look quite vintage, but was sadly very broken.

40_IMG_8603_40.jpg

Is it the last remaining piece of brass? I had to look very hard for it.

41_IMG_8604_41.jpg

The hair-setter was still inside the box. Did the thieves think it not worthy? The box was a little damp and there were a few cobwebs.. just minor problems.

42_IMG_8605_42.jpg

Alarm clocks like this should be banned. They tend to give you heart attacks. I know.. I used to have one just like it.

43_IMG_8606_43.jpg

We did close the door but did not jam it when leaving.

44_IMG_8607_44.jpg

45_IMG_8608_45.jpg

Surely it looked better than this when lived in.

51_IMG_8614_51.jpg

At the foot of the steps was an open garage. As per the norm, it was jammed full of crap.

48_IMG_8611_48.jpg

50_IMG_8613_50.jpg

49_IMG_8612_49.jpg

Why did they leave? Had ‘The Brass House’ suffered from a re-enactment of The Shining? We failed to find blood so perhaps not.

On reaching the car I was relieved to find it still there. You never know what pissed-off Karens might do to your parked vehicle.

1_IMG_8562_1.jpg

Since our visit, I have been reliably informed that ‘The Brass House’ has been sealed tight. It’s now off-limits until the board breakers visit again.

Looks are deceiving, you could walk up the steps.. the brush was only covering them.

I am surprised the Singer was still there. Those old sewing machines are a bit of a collectible around here. Could fetch a few hundred bucks even if it doesn't work.

I have seen several always in places like these. Leave it there long enough and it will get nicked.

Couldn't find malt vinegar in the states, what?! Where the hell'd you look, a shoe store?

This is America where grocery store aisles are wide enough for three carts trolley's side by side and that's just one person. There's more malt vinegar here than tea there. It's embarrassing. Wasn't until we left I realized something as basic as there's two coffees, decaf and regular, not 4,110.

Typical coffee aisle here, about 30 yards long, 7 feet tall, thousands of flavors. Malt vinegar's a couple aisles over.

My experience is old, like '94-'95. Things could have changed by now. I searched the aisles just like the above and could only find White Vinegar which is akin to piss.

They might have had it in that chain, Long John Silver.., but the Fish and Chips there were fucking terrible. I went just once.

I just woke up, heck of a laugh first thing in the am. Long John Silvers is funny. I can remember eating there one time only, I would've been a little kid, I even remember where it was.

Good one. 👍🏿

Malt vinegar's next the cider vinegar—aisle 100 something. I've yet to figure out what white vinegar is for.

I looked it up.

It can be used for cooking, baking, cleaning and weed control.

So I was consuming stuff that is used for weed control on my chips when living in AZ. Swell.

You always tell an interesting story about abandonned houses through your great photos.

This was a great place, Wales has the best timecapsules,

Footnote, adam mark and dale john, 2 of the biggest fucktards in urbex.

It took my breath away... that room. I have had a few moments like that. The snooker table in the Polish Church (Manchester) and that bed in the Shropshire house (you have been). These are the highlights of our 'profession'.

I don't know the fucktards. TBH, I rarely scour Facebook anymore. @anidiotexplores tends to do most of the digging for places, and I drive. It's a good partnership.

Not a bad set up in some of the rooms. Looks like there may even be some hidden gems in there. The tea set looked alright. I feel like I would need to wear gloves in any of the places you visit.

Wow, that is a time capsule for sure. Talk about a great find. It is cool that there wasn't any graffiti either and no one had torched the place yet. They must have not wanted to climb up those steps to give it a go! Great find!

Yeah mate, I loved it. I knew many had already been before but you could not tell. Must have been the right kinds of people. I hope it survives and now it appears to be semi-off the radar.

Your photo report is fantastic, observing the deterioration of the walls, the armchairs and the relatively good conservation of other objects causes strange feelings. The gradual invasion of vegetation is a return to life in the midst of these objects that have become futile and deadly.

the sewing machine for clothes is the same as the one at my grandmother's house

It looks like someone left fast. Those boots by the couch in the first indoor picture seem to suggest VERY fast. I usually take my boots with me 😂

Who knows what happened? They are usually loners who die and have no family. This one is a little different, they had kids.

I hope the kids didn't abandone him... That would be a shame. But if they didn't, why is the place not lived in?

For all that lack of brass, it should perhaps be renamed to The Brassless House…

Does this leave anyone else with questions? Like, what happened to the people? Were their clothes still there? Did they leave in a hurry? Did you take any bedroom pics? Who owns this house? Are there any relatives who would want the keepsakes like the set of china in photo #19? I could go on and on with the questions, way too many of them. I do not expect any answers, I am just wondering out loud. Anyway, I loved this post.

I cant answer any of those questions. The surname on the water bill is quite common, so cant trace here either.

Notes on bumming and crazy overgrowth on the outside! That was quite an explore.

I had an alarm clock that you had to throw at a wall to get it to stop ringing, it was my most annoying. Needless to say, one day I smashed thefucker. That will learn it, I thought.

Yes, indeedy.. there were bummers here doing their thing. The evidence is for all to see!

When will the bummers learn not to leave any witnesses!

It's like they just walked away and left everything. I find explores like this spookier than an old dilapidated building. It's just eerie and creepy when it looks like they just got up and left or even more ominous, just never returned one day for whatever reason.

I'd like the wrought iron fence despite the spikes at the top. Without a doubt it is very unimpressive from the outside, would you look at that it's perched on the top of the hill. I'd be parking my car right outside of it too. Side note: sweet Jesus look at the colors of the fern! The foliage is gorgeous. I see they have an open door policy. This does remind me of Grandad's house! Just like they got up and left the breakfast table. Chicken dish and the duck dish! That looks like something out of my grandmother's house. Oh my gosh! Do you come across many of these anymore? If there were many like this I think I would go everyday. It is pretty krudy and there's even with water left and dishes that were left unwashed? It looks like somebody has pilfered through everything. That's exactly what you said next. The benches toys are cute but truly if they're going to call and expect the brass to be all laid out. Right?

Are those salt and pepper shakers or is that just a little knick-knacks? Are you serious about The Malt vinegar? I think you are joking because you can get that at the corner store if you want. You lived in Phoenix! Well nearly. You shouldn't have had any trouble at all. Too bad I didn't know you then I would have brought you some. I think granny had a secret with the Vampire cape and everything. I wonder if the radio works because a lot of times they do and it's even a philco. Poor Popeye has a broken foot. Please don't ask a woman have any dishes she needs. You may not like the answer you get. I wonder if somebody took them out in sorted them like that or if they were moving. Oh my God and I'm laughing to myself just looking at all those plants in how they took over the house. Serves him right. Somebody went through all those bags with the games and everything in it perhaps you should have looked through because board games are so expensive now. They might have had kids but I'm thinking they might have grown because the board games room big plastic bags so maybe they were grandchildren? Oh wow! I thought I saw a piece of brass in the sitting room. But look at the floor on that thing. Can they be real urbex people if they're ransacking? I am enamored with the fact that people can leave houses like this and they stay intact with hardly anything missing for centuries it seems. Okay not centuries but long time yeah, no kidding. A real time capsule. Well if there's no rat on that chair, I would be afraid of getting some infectious disease. Oh my gosh my grandmother had one of those swans I swear to God. Do you think they like their bric-a-brac? I think they were junk collectors. Either that or they sold stuff for extra money I can't tell but it looks like a Singer sewing machine? That was such the little bit and I can see now you say that singer can the phone really isn't all that old so it's not been that long since they have been there. And you have knicker thief in your midst. I do like the pictures of the sitting room and what is that piece of brass that you found? Kudos to you for closing the door on your way out and don't fool yourself that might not have looked much different when they lived in it. I'm always amazed what people will live in. You're lucky there were no pissed off Karen's on your Trail. How lucky for you that you got to the Brass house before it was sealed. I can see that more and more they are Sealing these relics which is too bad because I really enjoy peeking into a living time capsule. Thanks again for taking us along with you. You give the best tours.

There are few like this @dswigle. To get 2 in one day is not an accident, as we discovered them, or should I say @anidiotexplores did via internal connections. I do have a few more coming up but this one is tough to beat.

Its November now and I will do little exploring until around March 2022. Too cold wet and miserable here during the winter season.

The Malt Vinegar was tough to find, but that was 26 years ago. Things have changed now it seems. I could also not get pate or pies in those days.

These shots are INCREDIBLE. I've had a bunch of albums on my phone and videos too (can you upload shorts on Hive or do you have to do a direct private link?)

Used to blog walking through so that would be kinda cool...the state of the furniture too is quite impressive regarding deterioration and seeing how nature is taking over.

Question for you @slobberchops ; I have 73 albums organized, some short and combinable, others longer. Definitely motivated to start going through again. Only issue being, some are older so quality not the greatest. If any issues let me know when posting. I wouldn't spam, but would once a week or so for these be good in the future?

Looking forward to UE again!

Stay safe and stay healthy everyone!

Again, great find, and safe exploring all!

There are no rules. One a day would be fine. If I was not so lazy, I would write more but it takes effort. Better quality will likely give you more votes.

A lot of toys? So there was clearly kids or grandchildren. Why has nobody taken it on or sold it off? Very strange. Then again, there's a former pub up the town where I live. It's been empty for at least 25 years, to my knowledge even more maybe. Someone owns it because a few years ago, the council forced them to get rid of the pigeons and make good the broken windows.
