I went through the Hive | I entered the Church of San José de El Poblado.

Greetings lovers of architecture and design, I hope you are well in these holidays where much is shared with family for Christmas and waiting for the arrival of a new year.

I come to bring you a surprise, because I am going to fulfill what I offered. This has been a challenge for me because, as I have already said, I have been afraid of the inside of churches since I was a little boy, because of the religious statues. However, I admire the architecture of the temples and it was time to share their interior design as well. So after showing you the exterior details of this beautiful church that is cultural heritage of the city, now I come to bring you images of its interior.

Well, it was not so easy for me to enter a catholic church, but because of the dear community Arquitectura+Diseño I ventured and it was worth it and yes, suddenly I see myself there, in front of one of the open doors of the main facade.

From the outside, a vestibule, a room before the main nave of the temple, was visible.

I made up my mind and took the step, so I entered the church of San José de El Poblado. Enter the vestibule and there are two statues of angels that are at the entrance of the main nave, each holding a container of water which is called a holy water font. The statues are in charge of the welcome and for the parishioners to cross themselves, which is a Catholic ritual. Shall I tell them the truth? I felt afraid and almost backed away but I had to continue.

I enter the nave and my astonished eyes gaze in amazement at that place with a long central corridor up to the presbytery or altar.

There are few faithful worshiping and with respect I see the architectural details that give beauty to the temple of San José. The ceiling, the chandeliers, the walls, the columns and the altar left me impressed. The altar at the end of the aisle was very elegant, well lit and decorated with flowers, with the pulpit centered, I think it is made of marble because I did not get too close, it was enough to be in there. Behind the pulpit there is a large wooden altarpiece where the Catholic idols were. I found the decoration of the altar very beautiful.

If the exterior of the church is a work of art, the interior is also a work of art, thanks to Augustine Goovaerst, an important architect from Belgium, who designed the vaulting, the altar and it seems that also the pews. All these elements were very well cared for, the capitals on the 28 columns are beautifully decorated as well as supporting the arches.

The vault is elegantly decorated, I was amazed. I don't know if the decorations had any religious significance, I imagine they did.

On the walls you can also see decorative paintings and arched stained glass windows that are between small columns decorated like the long columns that support the ceiling or vault.

The columns impressed me, I don't know the height or their diameter but you have to be there to see their great size.

I saw a balcony over the entrance of the nave with an arch and two short columns. I take advantage of the combination of colors that in the interior of the church is very colorful and pleases me, but I also see some deteriorated parts.

This is a very old church that has a history of 400 years and its current building is more than a century old and in all these years several restoration works have been done to the church and I understand that the roof was remodeled in 2019 and that is practically recent. I imagine that soon they will do a maintenance because this more than an aesthetic problem is structural and that is more serious because it can mean the collapse of the roof.

At the end of my visit I took pictures of the two side access and exit doors. One on the right side and the other on the left side are open and you can see the commercial area surrounding the temple.

I was impressed with the beauty of the interior of the temple of San José de El Poblado and to think that its interior divisions were once made of adobe and look what the will of a people who joined and actively participated in the construction of this magnificent temple that today continues to have the care of its inhabitants because they have a great sense of belonging to their church, cultural heritage of Medellin.

Greetings dear friend @sorprendente. At last, you've finally collected the immense courage to overcome your fear! I don't know the entire story about your childhood experiences with religious statues, but it's definitely a tremendous sign of relief that you've eventually escaped your comfort zone. Well done! 😊👍

It's an undeniable fact that the Church of San José de El Poblado is a magnificent masterpiece of sacred architecture! We have already witnessed its incredible exterior design in your previous post, and today its majestic interior spaces never failed to fascinate us too. Now that you've successfully ventured into its inner sanctum, what was your immediate feeling after meeting your phobia face to face? How did that helpful experience change your perspective on future visits for church interiors?

Greetings dear friend @storiesoferne, good that you saw that I made it, yes I could do it. Thanks for your recognition of my feat 😁 Well, there was a mix between a feeling of victory with terror but I was able to concentrate on the elements that make up the religious architecture without dwelling on the statues. I have serious conflicts with them 😄

I could also feel the atmosphere of tranquility on the part of the parishioners and this inspired me a lot of respect towards the place, also it was exciting to see directly the beauty of the decoration, I think if I will be able to make future visits to church interiors 😉 Thanks friend for leaving your impressions. I wish you many blessings!

You obviously deserve a pat on the back @sorprendente. I'm simply impressed by the way you diverted your attention thru focusing on other religious objects while also respecting the nearby statues. All the best to your future explorations of church interiors. No need to be afraid anymore. Take it easy dear friend! 😊
