La Alpujarra Administrative Center "José María Córdoba" | A public office complex and a lot of culture in Medellín

Greetings friends of the Architecture+Design Community, I hope you are well. I tell you that being here in Medellin only twice I have passed around the Centro Administrativo la Alpujarra "José María Córdoba" and on those two occasions the same thing has happened to me, I am impressed by this complex of buildings where the public offices of the Government of Antioquia and the Mayor's Office of Medellin operate. This is not a simple governmental construction, as I will show you, it is a grandiose architectural work where modernity is mixed with works of art by important contemporary artists.

What I regret is that the two times I have been there it has been closed, I must go during the hours it is open and this time the day was cloudy because around here there are days when the rains don't seem to stop so you will see photos a little opaque plus I realize that the camera of my iPhone is with failures because the photos are not coming out very well. But friends I did my best to share with you this emblematic construction of Medellin that is worth knowing.

Well friends, the Centro Administrativo la Alpujarra "José María Córdoba" is an important architectural project for the Department of Antioquia thinking of the grouping of regional and municipal government agencies, among other tourist spaces such as squares and other recreational buildings, all in a large complex where it seems that it was worth the investment for the reorganization of government agencies that operated in different areas and old buildings in the city.

I am not Colombian, but it is interesting to know a little bit about the place where you live and so I learned that El IDEA, Instituto para el Desarrollo de Antioquia helped for the design of this renowned urban space. Therefore, it is interesting to me that with the arrival of the Centro Administrativo La Alpujarra "José María Córdoba", an important urban complex that would concentrate public power is created. You can see the impressive main facade that I show you, with a large, imposing building where is the main square of La Alpujarra where there is also a very imposing sculpture called Monumento a la Raza.

The Monumento a la Raza, has an impressive crescent shape, it is immense and very majestic. This is a work of art of the Colombian sculptor Rodrigo Arenas Betancourt, the artist is deceased but his work is recognized, the shape of the sculpture is made of concrete and the figures that stand out of it are made of bronze.

This sculpture is a symbol of the culture of Antioquia and everyone who visits the La Alpujarra Administrative Center is delighted with this work that stands out in front of the government complex.

Looking around more despite the rainy day, I continue to admire this 35-year-old public space designed by the consortium of architects [Opus and Toroposada Arquitectos] (https://arqa.com/editorial/medellin-r/centro-civico-de-antioquia-plaza-de-la-libertad). It is a very well planned place, where there are many sculptures. There is another very striking one, which are two faces in homage to Dr. Guillermo Gaviria and Gilberto Echeverri, whose sculptor is Salvador Arango.

Impressive building, imagine the offices and the movement inside when it is working. Of course, the most important thing is the management and not the number of offices. Talking about its architecture, the building gives a good image and the reinforced concrete used is noticeable.

Attached to the Centro Administrativo La Alpujarra, you can see the Museo de Antioquia which was the former headquarters of the Mayor's Office of Medellin, although I could not stop, I hope another day to return calmly to enter the museum and show it to you. For now see a little of the main facade of this Art Deco style building that looks very well preserved.

The Plaza de la Libertad, is a government building part of the Mayor's Office of Medellin, also known as the Civic Center of Antioquia. Here a slight glimpse because the camera did not help me, but in this photo see this modern and very new building, because it is since 2010. Its shape looks to me like a big bookcase, although they also compare it with many sticks, also see how it has many windows that allow enough natural light to enter.

Nearby is the Plaza Botero which is a cultural reference of Antioquia, as well as other squares and buildings but I have to make time for a more productive visit. For example Botero Square houses a huge exhibition of sculptures by the artist Fernando Botero and in the only photo I present you of the Plaza you can see some of the sculptures of the artist and you can also see the dome of the Palace of Culture Rafael Uribe Uribe, former Palace of the Governorate of Antioquia.

All this has left me with the desire to return and I do not know when I return to downtown Medellin to make a tour calmly, with better weather and good photos, but when I do I will bring you a publication of each space and square around the Centro Administrativo la Alpujarra "José María Córdoba".

In the details you can see that the sculptor was inspired by this monument, the work took several years to be ready because I was researching and it was approved in 1975 and was inaugurated in 1988, impressive. Greetings my friend!

La Plaza de la Libertad caught my attention, the truth is that it has an interesting design similar to a bookshelf, it would be interesting to see the interior design of it. Greetings!

This is the first time I have discovered the design and architecture of a unique building that is full of civilization and history, and architecture and designs like this are certainly made by people who A high level ability and not everyone has that.

In some countries, the architect of such a building design has become a distinctive icon of a country so that it is visited by many tourists from various parts of the world.

I'm happy to find it on your blog

Wow! What a magnificent public building dear friend @sorprendente! But most of all, my eyes are glued to that concrete sculptural artwork called the Monumento a la Raza. It's simply intricate and appears to me that it exhibits an interesting cultural story. Could you please elaborate to us what exactly it's all about? 😊

My special greeting dear friend @storiesoferne, I have been inactive, well friend the truth that the Monumento a la Raza leaves everyone very admired because it is an impressive sculpture, both for the precision and complexity of the sculptor during the creation of this work of art and because it symbolizes the roots of Antioquia, its people and culture, the mixture of race and the birth of the new world, the truth that being in front of this sculpture you feel the feeling with which the sculptor worked, achieving to be an imposing work. Thank you friend, blessings to you 😊
