Una idea, un invento, mucha ambición, traición, drama y una estafa descubierta es lo que hace a esta miniserie una de esas que debes ver y más cuando te diga que todo está basado en la vida real. Quería ver esta serie desde hace mucho tiempo, sabía que me encantaría porque amo estas historias y más aún si son del mundo Tech.

An idea, an invention, a lot of ambition, betrayal, drama, and a scam discovered is what makes this miniseries one of those you must watch and even more when I tell you that everything is based on real life. I wanted to watch this series for a long time, I knew I would love it because I love these stories and even more if they are from the Tech world.

Imagínense a una mujer en la cúspide del mundo. Con una empresa valorada en 9000 millones de dólares, creo que ninguno de nosotros puede imaginarse esa cifra jamás, es mucho, mucho dinero. Ahora, sé que muchos de ustedes estarán familiarizados con las siguientes historias: personas que dejan la universidad, que alcanzaron el éxito siendo muy jóvenes, que inventaron algo novedoso y que los que no entraron en ese momento, se quedaron por fuera y perdieron la oportunidad de ganar mucho dinero por no invertir. Al menos a alguno de nosotros nos habrá pasado esto, o nos habremos arrepentido por no haberlo hecho por miedo, o por salirnos ante. O simplemente, por no poder hacerlo.

Elizabeth Holmes pudo hacerlo, creó algo innovador, y todos quisieron formar parte. ¿Qué hizo? Un aparato que podía analizar cientos de exámenes con solo una gota de sangre y todo a través de una empresa: Theranos. Ella es una joven que dejó Stanford a los 19 años y se dedicó de lleno a su empresa, los peces gordos la protegían, hacían todo lo que ella les pedía, les dieron todo el dinero del mundo. Todo Silicon Valley acudiría a ella y quería formar parte de la nueva tecnología, algo inaudito, único, indescriptible. Pero todo era un fraude que fraguó junto a su Ex pareja, Sunny Balwani.

! [English] Imagine a woman at the top of the world. With a company valued at $9 billion, I don't think any of us can ever imagine that figure, it's a lot, a lot of money. Now, I know many of you will be familiar with the following stories: college dropouts, people who became successful at a very young age, invented something new, and those who didn't get in at the time, got left out and missed out on the opportunity to make a lot of money by not investing. At least some of us will have gone through this, or we will have regretted not having done it out of fear, or because we were afraid to leave before. Or simply for not being able to do it.

Elizabeth Holmes could do it, she created something innovative, and everyone wanted to be part of it. What did she do? A device that could analyze hundreds of tests with just a drop of blood, and all through one company: Theranos. She is a young woman who left Stanford at 19 and dedicated herself fully to her company, the bigwigs protected her, they did everything she asked them to do, they gave them all the money in the world. All of Silicon Valley would flock to her and wanted to be part of the new technology, something unheard of, unique, indescribable. But it was all a fraud that she set up with her ex-partner, Sunny Balwani.

Es una gran historia, ¿no lo creen? Por eso asumo que no dudaron en llevar esto a las pantallas, hacer un casting increíble y dedicar una miniserie a una historia que aún está en tendencia y sigue siendo noticia al día de hoy. Se buscaron a una de las mejores actrices para interpretar a Elizabeth: Amanda Seyfried, quién les adelanto que se ganó el Emmy y el Golden Globe por esta interpretación; bien merecido. Las dificultades de representar a Elizabeth eran que ella cambió su tono de voz (la propia Elizabeth, digo), utilizaba un tono de voz muy grave para dirigirse a las personas. Esta es una práctica muy habitual en un mundo dominado por hombres, también lo hizo Margaret Thatcher para poder encajar. Pero no solo el cambio de la tonalidad de su voz era algo llamativo, sino también esa mirada calculadora y fría, que la hacían parecer enfocada. Por un momento pensé que era autista, luego me di cuenta de que era más una psicópata que otra cosa. Un ser carente de emociones y que no le importaba el daño que hiciera a las personas.

El daño que hizo a las personas es muy grave, porque si hay algo que pueda dañar más que cualquier cosa es poner en riesgo la salud de alguien. La tipa, por tener ansias de poder, autorizaba a hacer prácticas fuera de cualquier tipo de ética, entre estas cosas, distribuyó datos erróneos a pacientes, entre algunos casos hubo cáncer (falso), principios de abortos (falso), y ataques al corazón (falso). Imagínense la gravedad del asunto y por qué cuando todo salió a la luz, la empresa se desplomó a gran punto que no había manera de salvarla. Porque no se trata de un iPhone que no resultó, eran las vidas de las personas las que estaban en riesgo.

That's why I assume they didn't hesitate to take this to the screens, make an incredible casting and dedicate a miniseries to a story that is still trending and is still in the news today. They looked for one of the best actresses to play Elizabeth: Amanda Seyfried, who won the Emmy and the Golden Globe for this performance; well deserved. The difficulties of playing Elizabeth were that she changed her tone of voice (Elizabeth herself, I mean), she used a very deep tone of voice to address people. This is a very common practice in a male dominated world, so did Margaret Thatcher in order to fit in. But it was not only the change in the tone of her voice that was striking, but also that cold, calculating gaze, which made her seem focused. For a moment I thought she was autistic, then I realized she was more of a psychopath than anything else. A being devoid of emotions and who did not care about the harm she did to people.

The harm she did to people was very serious, because if there is something that can harm more than anything else, it is putting someone's health at risk. The woman, because of her lust for power, authorized practices out of any kind of ethics, among these things, she distributed erroneous data to patients, among some cases there was cancer (false), beginning of abortions (false), and heart attacks (false). Imagine the seriousness of the matter and why, when everything came to light, the company collapsed to the point that there was no way to save it. Because it wasn't an iPhone that didn't work, it was people's lives that were at risk.

La miniserie cuenta con 8 capítulos en dónde muestra la evolución de la empresa desde su creación, así como todas las banderas rojas que mostraban a Elizabeth como una persona de armas tomar. Al principio, era alguien que quería cambiar el mundo, tenía una visión, sabía que quería tener una empresa y ser millonaria de cualquier modo posible. Con su ambición lo logró, pudo conocer a los mejores científicos, que la ayudaron a desarrollar el prototipo, pero cuando llegó el momento de la verdad, ese momento en el que decides si irte por el lado correcto, que tal vez sería no seguir adelante hasta que tuvieras un modelo viable. O irte por el lado del dinero, en dónde podrías no seguir tus principios y empezar a mentir y a hacer todo lo posible para conseguir tu fin. Pero como dicen por ahí: "La trampa sale", siempre, siempre, siempre, todo sale a la luz, de una u otra manera, todo se sabe.

Estas historias las hemos visto repetidas veces en muchos ámbitos, cuando estamos en el mundo tecnológico, lo vemos casi a diario. En estos 5 años conociendo diferentes proyectos he visto como la sed de poder destruye a los proyectos, malos líderes, malos jefes, gente que no escucha y todo por una sola razón: dinero. Les aseguro que en cada uno de esos proyectos que estuve, siempre empezaron por las razones correctas, siempre quieren ver cambios, o un modelo nuevo... Algo que cambie el mundo. Yo también lo he querido, he creído en más de uno, y me han roto el corazón (es contigo, ballena muerta 😂). Pero el que tiene las convicciones fuertes, el que no se deja corromper por el poder o empieza a tener delirios de grandezas, no se rebaja a cambiar sus convicciones. A considerar ahora en lo que siempre supo que estuvo mal, porque al final nos engañamos nosotros mismos y no a los demás.

! [English] The miniseries has 8 chapters where it shows the evolution of the company since its creation, as well as all the red flags that showed Elizabeth as a person of weapons to take. At the beginning, she was someone who wanted to change the world, she had a vision, she knew she wanted to have a company and be a millionaire in any way possible. With her ambition she succeeded, she was able to meet the best scientists, who helped her develop the prototype, but when the moment of truth came, that moment when you decide whether to go for the right side, which would be maybe not to go ahead until you have a viable model. Or go for the money side, where you might not follow your principles and start lying and doing everything possible to achieve your end. But as they say: "The cheating goes on", always, always, always, everything comes out, one way or another, everything is known.

We have seen these stories repeatedly in many areas, when we are in the technological world, we see it almost daily. In these 5 years knowing different projects I have seen how the thirst for power destroys projects, bad leaders, bad bosses, people who do not listen and all for one reason: money. I assure you that in each of those projects that I have been in, they always started for the right reasons, they always want to see changes, or a new model... Something that changes the world. I've wanted it too, I've believed in more than one, and I've had my heart broken (it's with you, dead whale 😂). But the one who has the strong convictions, the one who does not let himself be corrupted by power or begins to have delusions of grandeur, does not stoop to change his convictions. To consider now on what he always knew was wrong, because in the end we deceive ourselves and not others.

Otra cosa que me molestó mucho de la historia fue como se hacía llamar una Dama de hierro y se comparaba con otras mujeres importantes en la historia. Decía haber roto techos de cristal, y sí, hay mujeres que lo han logrado, trabajando fuerte, duro y con muchos desafíos. Uno de los personajes que más me gustó fue el de la Dra. Phyllis Gardner, quien desde el primer momento básicamente la mandó a estudiar y a trabajar duro sin saltarse los pasos. Fue un personaje duro, fuerte y para los que tuvimos el privilegio de asistir a la universidad, podemos reconocer a este tipo de profesoras muy fácilmente. Pude haber tenido dos o tres como ella, que básicamente te decía que sin esfuerzo no podrías lograr nada, y que la ciencia es acerca de “tratar”, de probar, de ensayo y error, sinos errores no podemos ver en dónde estamos mal. Ella tuvo su gran momento también, cuando se la encontró muchos años después y cuando estuvo a punto de salir el artículo del New York Times en dónde salió la noticia de Theranos. En dónde le dijo, que gracias a ella, no volverían a confiar en una mujer para invertir en una gran empresa. Los techos de cristal se volvieron a poner altos y costará volver a romperlos.

Yo estuve los últimos 3 capítulos con un estrés que no se imaginan, porque aunque sé cómo termina la historia, quería saber cuál había sido el proceso de sacar la historia a la luz. La parte más fuerte era ver a las personas que ayudaron a sacar todo a la luz, desmoralizados, deprimidos, sin poder comer o dormir. Siendo investigados y puestos en duda porque se atrevieron a desafiar a unos gigantes, déspotas y manipuladores a los que no les importaba más nadie, sino a sí mismos. El final de la serie es oro puro, Amanda hace el papel de su vida al interpretar a Elizabeth y más en sus últimas escenas. El casting es una coral de excelentes actores que nos dan buenos momentos. Les recomiendo que si quieren ver algo intenso, vean la miniserie. Está en streaming a través de STAR+, vayan a verla. Y si ya la vieron, déjenme sus comentarios, que muero por hablar de esta serie.

! [English] Another thing that really bothered me about the story was how she called herself an Iron Lady and compared herself to other important women in history. She claimed to have broken glass ceilings, and yes, there are women who have made it, working hard, hard and with many challenges. Where he told her that, thanks to her, they would never again trust a woman to invest in a big company. The glass ceilings have become high again, and it will be hard to break them again.

I spent the last 3 chapters with a stress that you can't imagine, because even though I know how the story ends, I wanted to know what the process of bringing the story to light had been. The strongest part was seeing the people who helped bring everything to light, demoralized, depressed, unable to eat or sleep. Being investigated and called into question because they dared to challenge giants, despots, and manipulators who didn't care about anyone else but themselves. The end of the series is pure gold, Amanda plays the role of her life as Elizabeth and more in her last scenes. The casting is a choral of excellent actors that give us good moments. I recommend that if you want to see something intense, watch the miniseries. It is streaming through STAR+, go watch it.
