After the completion of the semester, the whole of the engineering department of the outgoing 200 Level student are to engage in a Student Work Experience Program (SWEP) in the school in which we would be allocated to different department in the school in week to gather experiences which would be of later benefits to our future.

The activities we partake during this program would be recorded, a report would be written and also would be defended. To make this easy for me, I would be taking record of my activities and knowledge earned each day and therefore be writing them as an article, sharing them Hive which I know would help me a lot in documenting the report and earning as I learn by the way.
The location of my SWEP program for the first week is DUFARMS meaning Directorate Of University Farm, which has a mandate of “Land Preparation for researchers/Individuals (University staff). In the morning of the program, we were first addressed about safety precautions and the advantages of being disciplined and having integrity.
Some of the safety precautions that were addressed are:

  • Don’t operate an engine/machine you do not know how to operate
  • Don’t rest on an object or machine
  • Do not spill oil on the floor
  • Horse play are not allowed in the workshop
  • Every tool must be cleared after use… etc.

The name of the Supervisor who first addressed us is Mr. Oladejo Ogundiyi who is the Technical Supervisor of Tractor Unit. We have different tractor Unit in the school namely: COLFAS, CAEDES, DEM. At the moment of our meeting, many of the tractors and implements had been taken out for work so, the supervisor showed us the available farm implements at the location we were in.

A PLANTER

One of the first implements that was showed to us was a Planter. A Planter is an machine implement attached to tractor to perform the task of planting seeds. The planter plants the seeds and at the same time covers the ground after planting is done.

For this Implement, this was said to be a maize planter because it contains maize seeds in it. In the picture below, you can see the maize seed kept in the seed hopper.

A BOOM SPRAYER

The boom sprayer is also a farm implement which is used to apply herbicides to the farm. With the boom sprayer, it is a lot more easier, saves times and reduces a lot of stress compared to using the knapsack sprayer which has just a single nozzle.
