Good morning and Happy New 2023 dear friends of Hive and Pinmapple! Today with my post I want to take you on an excursion through the beautiful Euganean Hills of Padua, Italy.

It is a complex of hills with a height ranging from 300 to 600 meters, which rise in the middle of the Po Valley, are of ancient volcanic origin and thanks to this its soils are rich in nutrients and have a very rich flora and varied, with a notable presence of local fauna, such as deer, roe deer, wild boar, lynx and many others. Thanks to these characteristics, the entire territory of the Euganean Hills was the First Regional Park of the Veneto and the whole area is a nature reserve.

For our excursion, me, my partner @giovi86 and Shyla decided to go up Monte Venda which is located in the municipality of Galzignano Terme (Padua, Italy), which offers a fairly impervious route (number 4) to reach the ruins of the ancient Monastery of the Olivetans.

The day we made this excursion was in autumn, but with a sunny day and steep climbs between many stones it was a great grind, you will also see in the photos the sweat we made, the only one that was extremely comfortable in that route was Shyla, I too would have less effort if I had a 4x4 :).

However, despite the difficulty of the route, in the woods of the Euganean Hills you can breathe truly good and clean air and you can perceive a beautiful natural energy among the luxuriant plants. This makes you keep walking with a smile, even if you have to pump.

The route always continues with narrow and steep paths, but once you get to the top of Monte Venda, the panorama is wonderful and the view of the ruins of the ancient Olivetani Monastery makes you breathe an atmosphere of other times, like taking a deep in the time.

The Olivetani Monastery dates back to 1197, where we have the first news of a settlement of the Monks of Santa Giustina of Padua, looking for a place of spiritual retreat. When in 1300 the order of the Monks of Santa Giustina had a crisis, the Bishop of Padua assigned the care of the monastery to the aristocratic order of the Olivetan Monks, from which it has kept its name up to the present day.

The remains of the monastery can be visited entirely, except for a couple of unsafe rooms, where access is not permitted. There is a very mystical atmosphere in these places eroded by time, you can walk among what were the ancient residences of the monks, you can also see a fireplace in one of these, probably this was a common dining room.

The church stands in the heart of the remains of this ancient structure, the 4 walls remain, but the roof, which was probably made of wood, has disappeared over the centuries. But to one side of the room where the ancient church once stood, there are these stairs that go down underground.

Going through which you find yourself in a corridor that seems to have been carved out of the rock of the mountain, at the end of which there is the entrance to a small church still consecrated, which has survived the centuries of history. A small mystical place, very charming, that you don't expect to find under the ruins of the monastery.

Granted some time for reflections and thoughts in this place full of energy and mysticism, we set off to go back down to the valley and reach the car, the descent route follows the opposite side of Monte Venda, but leads to the same point starting point and is as steep as the one on the other side.

For this reason, if you decide to visit the Olivetani Monastery, I recommend that you bring good mountain boots and an alpenstock, because it is easy to slip on the bumpy flat rocks that are present in both routes.

Dear friends, that's all for today, I hope you enjoyed this sharing, it is a place that I have admired a lot and I am happy to share it with you. I wish everyone a wonderful 2023, full of satisfaction.

Thank you so much you are very kind! We walked about 2 hours going and 2 hours coming back, I don't know the exact distance, but I think it's 10/12 km in total.
