Nature photography. First experience with my new 400-800mm lens. - [ENG-ITA]

Good evening Hivians, yesterday we talked about Slow Motion videos, today instead we return to pure photography, the naturalistic one, which has always fascinated me, especially when it comes to capturing the moment of wildlife, free in their habitat. But to do this, dedicated equipment is needed, such as telephoto lenses that have exorbitant costs, starting from €1000 and up.

For these reasons, until recently, I had always had to give up the desire to photograph animals, until a short time ago, while I was stationary for arm surgery, I had seen this Chinese telephoto lens of 800mm, which could be transformed into 1600mm with the 2x support, which cost just over €100 and was sold as universal with a Sony E-Mount adapter, perfect for my Sony Alpha 6000. It had intrigued me a lot, I looked at it, searched for reviews, it seemed that it was not a rip-off, although the price was much lower, although it should be considered that expensive professional lenses are almost all electronic and with fast and automatic focus, while this Chinese 1600mm lens is completely manual and this makes it very difficult to use at long distances.

A few days had passed, I had shown it to @giovi86 and she said that if I liked it so much and wanted to buy it, she would give it to me as a birthday present which was in a few weeks, so she would support my passion. Happy with the proposal, since Giovanna always has a problem choosing gifts, we had made the order which was due to arrive at the end of March. While with surprise, it had already arrived a couple of weeks ago and perfectly in order with great speed.

Buonasera sera Hivians, ieri abbiamo parlato di video Slow Motion, oggi invece torniamo alla fotografia pura, quella naturalistica, che da sempre mi affascina, soprattutto quando si parla di cogliere l'attimo di vita degli animali selvatici, liberi nel loro habitat. Ma per fare ciò occorrono attrezzature dedicate, come le tele ottiche che hanno costi esorbitanti, si parte da 1000 euro in su.

Per questi motivi fino a poco tempo fa ho sempre dovuto rinunciare al desiderio di fotografare animali, fino a poco tempo fa, nel mentre che ero fermo per l'operazione al braccio avevo visto questa tele ottica cinese da ben 800 mm trasformabile a 1600 mm con il supporto 2x, che costava poco oltre i 100 euro e veniva venduta come universale con adattatore a Sony E-Mount, perfetta per la mia Sony Alpha 6000. Mi aveva incuriosito molto, la guardavo, cercavo recensioni, sembrava che non fosse una fregatura, sebbene il prezzo molto più ridotto, anche se va considerato che le ottiche professionali molto costose, sono quasi tutte elettroniche e con focus rapidi e automatici, mentre questa ottica cinese da 1600 mm è completamente manuale e questo la rende molto difficile da utilizzare a lunghe distanze.

Era passato qualche giorno, l'avevo fatta vedere a @giovi86 e mi disse che se mi piaceva tanto e la volevo comprare, me l'avrebbe regalata lei come regalo di compleanno che sarebbe tra qualche settimana, così avrebbe supportato la mia passione. Felice della proposta, visto che Giovanna ha sempre un problema nel scegliere i regali, avevamo fatto l'ordine che sarebbe dovuto arrivare a fine Marzo. Mentre con stupore già un paio di settimane fa è arrivato tutto e perfettamente in ordine con una grande rapidità.

I couldn't wait to try it, but the lens is big and requires good use of both hands and with a hand that was not functioning well, I couldn't try it until last Sunday, when after setting everything up with "care", I tried the new lens during a walk in the mountains with @giovi86. It was not easy at all at first, also because I tried to use it without a tripod, but every slight movement reflects for meters when the framing in the lens is hundreds of meters away, so I started to do various tests until I found a bit of balance and tried to take the photos with the breathing technique used by selected shooters to avoid movement during shooting, which helped a lot. But to obtain perfect photos it should be used with a tripod and remote control.

Non vedevo l'ora di provarla, ma l'ottica è grande e occorre un buon utilizzo di entrambe le mani e con una mano che funzionava male non sono riuscito a provarla fino a Domenica scorsa, che dopo aver parato tutto con "cura", ho provato la nuova ottica durante una passeggiata tra i monti con @giovi86. Non è stato per nulla semplice all'inizio, anche perché ho provato ad utilizzarla senza cavalletto, ma ogni minimo movimento si riflette di metri quando l'inquadratura nell'obiettivo dista centinaia di metri, dunque ho iniziato a fare diverse prove fino a quando non ho trovato un po' di equilibrio e ho cercato di scattare le foto con la tecnica di respiro che usano i tiratori scelti per non muoversi durante lo sparo ed ha aiutato molto. Ma per ottenere foto perfette dovrebbe essere utilizzata con cavalletto e telecomando a distanza.

Getting used to the focus, I looked for a couple of subjects at different distances, the first was a falcon that I had seen perched on the treetops of a forest about 200 meters away, while the second subject was the top of a mountain with a cross at the top that was about 300 meters away. The further away the subject is, the more difficult it is to stay still and focus, but I managed to take a nice photo of the cross despite the great distance, and it definitely helps that it is a stationary subject.

Presa confidenza con la messa a fuoco, ho cercato un paio di soggetti a diverse distanze, il primo è stato un falco che avevo visto appoggiarsi sulle cime degli alberi di un bosco che distava circa 200 metri, mentre il secondo soggetto era la cima di un monte con all'apice una croce che distava circa 300 metri. Più distante è il soggetto e più è difficile stare fermi e mettere a fuoco, bella foto della croce nonostante la grande distanza, aiuta sicuramente il fatto che è un soggetto immobile.

After getting some material, we started to head back home and when I transferred the photos from the camera to my smartphone to develop them, I realized that they were all stained!!! I was shocked and disassembled the lens, which I had taken for granted was immaculate when I had mounted it, and after a quick inspection to get out of there fast, I had not seen any problems, but inside the threads, there was some dust/residue that had ended up on the sensor. It was my fault, I should have been more careful, now I will have to clean the sensor which is very delicate to do, using specific sterile swabs to avoid damaging it.

Ottenuto un po' di materiale abbiamo iniziato a rientrare a casa e quando ho passato le fotografie dalla fotocamera allo smartphone per svilupparle, mi sono accorto che erano tutte macchiate!!! Ho preso un colpo e ho smontato l'obiettivo, che quando avevo montato avevo dato per scontato fosse immacolato e dopo una veloce ispezione per uscire di fretta non avevo visto problemi, invece all'interno delle filettature c'era della polvere/residui che sono finiti sul sensore. È stata colpa mia, dovevo stare più attento, ora dovrò fare una pulizia del sensore che è molto delicata da effettuare, utilizzando dei studenti sterili appositi per non danneggiarlo.

Despite this setback, I was able to fix the flaws with post-production, at least the biggest one, and obtain a decent photo. I have uploaded both the before and after images to show you the difference.

Ma nonostante questo in intoppo, con la post produzione sono riuscito a sistemare i difetti, almeno il più grosso ed ottenere una foto discreta. Ho caricato entrambe le immagini, prima e dopo la post produzione per farvi vedere la differenza.

So, they are not cover-worthy photos, they have flaws and are not very sharp because they require a fixed support, but I am very happy because I have realized the potential of this low-cost lens, which is huge in my opinion in relation to its price. It requires a lot of practice and skill to achieve high-level photographs, but it can be done and that's what I wanted to understand, and that's what counts. Now, all that remains is for me to apply myself and go explore nature.

Allora, non sono delle foto da copertina, hanno difetti e non sono molto nitide perché necessità di supporto fisso, ma sono felicissimo perché ho constatato il potenziale di questa ottica low costo, che è enorme a mio parere in rapporto al suo prezzo. Richiede molta pratica e abilità per ottenere fotografie di alto livello, ma può farle ed è quello che volevo capire ed è quello che conta, ora non mi rimane che applicarmi e andare a scoprire la natura.
