Spirited Away ( Sen to Chihiro no kamikakushi ) 2001

For some reason I had never seen spirited away, although howl's moving castle and princess mononoke
It's one of my favorite movies ever.
They had marked and influenced my teen so much that I was looking for the perfect moment so as not to do injustice to this masterpiece and appreciate it as it deserves.
The rave reviews over the years had created huge expectations for me.
So when I saw it yesterday, I loved it so much that not only were they all fulfilled, but even more were created for future films.
I consider a film top notch when it draws you in and makes you part of its world.
Now when a fantasy manages to do this, the result is enchanting.
spirited away is not just a movie, it's a whole experience, a dream in places with creatures you couldn't even imagine.
The smile, the tears and all the emotions it created for me were the result not only of the protagonist's journey but also of mine in this beautiful universe.
Although we are talking about the ultimate fantasy film, Chihiro's character development is extremely realistic.
It does not deal with the ultimate warrior against evil, but with an unassuming girl who slowly overcomes her difficulties and fears and externalizes the goodness and bravery that was hidden inside her.
I love the vast imagination, visuals and design of the amazing Hayao Miyazaki and of course Studio Ghibli.
This stark contrast between extremely large and small characters and their diversity is mesmerizing and what wins me over along with the atmospheric music.
The only pity and a little melancholy after the end of the film was that I did not see it and unfortunately did not experience this experience as a child.
PS: maybe my favorite movie photo

You're right, when a film draws into all sort of imaginations and belonging, I consider it a really good film then. I haven't seen, but the way you've described it, it feels like an experience everyone can relate to.

I haven't really watched anime, I'd have to, for me to really know if I'd like it not.

Spirited Away is my favorite Studio Ghibli film and I think the only one I saw originally in a theater.

Totally with you. I'm not big into anime, but I like most of the Ghibli films. I mean they are kind of required watching in Japan since everyone knows them, so they sometimes pop into conversation. The two you mention—Mononoke and Howl—are really good. I love the anti-war message of the latter, and the eco message of the former is also good.

But Spirited Away just blows all other Ghibli films away. Chihiro is an amazing character and a great model for any kid, boy or girl, to watch and learn from. The world of the gods that they put her in is so creative and interesting. A lot of the things in that world are directly from Japanese mythology, so that's interesting too. But the main thing is her character growth. As you say it's very realistic and it's great to watch.

The music is amazing. And the pacing is also wonderful. The quiet moments are almost as good as the exciting ones. You post the photo of the train ride. That quiet scene is so delightful.

Spirited Away was the highest grossing film in Japan till Demon Slayer came around last year (2 years ago?) and topped it. In most people's heart it is still the best film Japan has produced in years. Absolutely my favorite film.
