The Grey Area With Money Obsession

avatar

Most of the wealthy people out there realise that money doesn't generally buy happiness. According to a study about money and its contribution to happiness, it was realised that pass the $100K mark, the ability for money to make you happy was very minimal.

I believe the main reason is because beyond our greedy tendency to accumulate more, that amount can solve our basic financial problems which leaves us to face our non finance related problems. This can't usually be solved with money even if we have a boatload of it. The interesting thing is that they (non financial problems) also play a huge part in making us happy or not depending on the stage they're in.

In the name of survival, I was obsessed with making money a couple of years ago. It occupied my thoughts and actions most of the day, my thoughts were like a magnifying glass placed under the sunlight and my actions were like the burning white paper.

I ended up having more than enough to survive but it came with a cost which was not being able to get out of that mode when I wanted to. Apart from the apparent burnout, It was all subconscious and I constantly found myself thinking and doing money stuffs when I shouldn't be doing that. Like an overspeeding car without a functional break, I didn't know how to stop.

Reading this short narrative could give you the impression that obsession is bad. Which is true, however, I have come to realise that there's good in the bad.

A Healthy Obsession Is Good

This is based on the simple premise that if you want it, you will get it. I believe and have some understanding of the law of attraction and the passivity of letting things come to you but I find it inconsistent down here on Earth and would like to stick with what works almost everytime which is really wanting something and going out there and getting it.

Although getting wealthy is simple enough, it is nontheless not an easy feat and will require on average for you to be obsessed in some shape or form. The real battle happens when that obsession is seen as a gateway to by-any-means-neccessary type of thinking in regards to acquiring wealth.

There's really a thin line between good and evil. And it is one of the reasons why wealthy people are generally seen in a bad light by the population. This is not unfounded but it sometimes gets exaggerated.

I've been fortunate enough to have met a couple of wealthy people and what I noticed is that beyond their ability to do good or bad, they were very smart. But I guess that doesn't justify anything since there are many smart people who are not wealth. Right?

In regards to the good or bad thing, they were seemingly good, very friendly and talked a lot. And there was fire in their eyes. This fire that consumes all obstacles standing on their path. A healthy obsession is good in a sense that it serves as a fuel that helps us solve financial obstacles and achieve our financial goals. But we have to learn how to use it and never ever relinquish control.

I basically feel that most of the wealthiest people in the world have skeletons in their cupboards because enormous wealth comes at some mild or extreme infringement of others. However, it's not all wealthy people. As per obsession, sometimes the fear of poverty and ground zero causes it.

Yes, massive wealth often requires bending other people's reality against their will to yours. Even with technology, it's too much leverage at the expense of others. I think I was in that position of ground zero back then. I just had to do it.

I understand that in that desperation to survive and not be shackled by poverty, people get to put their hands into all sort of things that even them would have thought was impossible before. Being obsessed with making money can lead to more harm than good health wise and every other thing. And I also don't know if there's anything like healthy obsession but people just have to keep that balance. Not to get too attached and also not to cease making efforts. I enjoyed this post. Well-done.

Getting rid of an obsession isn't very easy to say the least. There's literally a thin line between an obsession and addiction. Healthy obsession? My own opinion though,I don't really think any obsession's healthy. According to someone, "Too much of everything is bad" and this goes a long way in my life cause. I actually think being obsessed with making money 'can' be a healthy obsession depends on how you function or where you draw the line. The word "obsession" is still there though,so you just have to find a way around it,if that makes any sense;)

It makes a lot of sense! In general, most of us don't know or can't strike a balance between the two so we're constantly jumping back and forth between them. However, at the root of it, 'obsession' is something that is innate in us that's why it takes more effort not to trigger it than to trigger it. So controlling it requires will.

You're absolutely correct but in way now,I can't really see the difference between an obsession and an addiction? Oh okay I think I got it. Obsession has to do with an action or person while addiction a substance or something?ಥ‿ಥ

Hi @takhar, your article is very well written. It is true, money does not buy happiness. I think happiness has a lot to do with being satisfied whether you have a little or a lot, which doesn't mean we should be conformists either.

There is a scripture verse that speaks a truth that has to do with something you wrote. Obviously it does not happen in all cases, but the probability is very high:

1 Timothy 6: 9, 10: "However, those who are determined to be rich fall into temptations and snares, they are victims of many foolish and harmful desires that plunge them into ruin and destruction. For the love of money is a root of all kinds of evils, and, seeking to gratify that love, some have been led astray from the faith and have caused* themselves*many sorrows."

I am becoming more and more convinced that this advice is very wise, don't you think? 🤔🤝💪

Hi Marbrym! Yes, I think happiness ultimately boils down to that. Money is just a variable that some naturally have whilst others don't.

I think so too. The scripture summaries it perfectly and the interesting thing is that we also see it happening in modern society. Old habits don't die easily.
