To Fit Or Not Fit In A Box?

avatar

I've been constantly advised by my superiors to try different things and focus on a few of them that resonate with me. The thinking is that way I'll be able to hone in on my skills and achieve something of considerable value. Rationally, it perfectly makes sense. Beyond rationally, there's no sense in it!

Here on Hive, I've been exploring the communities. Liketu has become a top favourite of mine because of its diverse and visually appealing content which is both relatable and communicable to me. Something in me is particularly drawn to The Ink Well community and I can see myself joining there soon especially after reading a wonderful masterpiece by pinkchic yesterday. This community is a creative powerhouse.

Leofinance by far has one of the best informative, practical and educative content out there. I've learnt a lot these past weeks about the Hive ecosystem through consuming leofinance content. This doesn't imply that there isn't any room for general purpose communities. I've subscribed to a couple of them and they each have a unique way of gathering great content.

Normally, fitting into a box will require foregoing maneuverability while maneuverability will require foregoing fitting into a box, right?

A Structural Perspective

There are many benefits with fitting into a box. The most notable is that you'll always know what to do and the outcome you'll get which is essentially its predictive nature. Besides that, it is safe in a sense that you won't be tested beyond your perceived limited capacity.

This is all well and good until you need to grow and you realise that you've lost the ability to grow outside of your comfort zone. It has happened to me many times and it's clearly not a good realisation because it could have been avoided.

Whereas, maneuverability is like an aircraft in the sky. You could cover a large distance in a short period of time but you wouldn't have any tangible experience with the distance covered. Instead of being a traveller, you're simply a tourist.

So it makes a lot of sense from a structural perspective to fit into a box. This will allow me to build structure and achieve a tangible foundation. Something that is needed in the beginning of any worthwhile endeavour. And to their delight, I'll also be heeding the advice of my superiors.

However, fitting into a box is not the plan, it's a part of it. The real plan is to fit and then not fit in a box. That way, I'll be able to know and understand a quite number of things without being confined to any of them. That's my thinking strategy with Hive communities and Hive in general.
