I guess for die hard fans of the sport this kind of thing leaves a very bitter taste as you discussed above but more generally it's got a lot of people who wouldn't generally be interested in the sport talking about F1.

Good article in The Guardian today about the growing fan base for F1 that seems to be based more on off track drama than it does in the racing

Yes F1 is more like a soap opera than a sport currently. I blame Liberty Media for this as this is how they think they an grow the sport via other channels. Rather have genuine sporting fans than a bunch of millennials who are snowflakes and want it to be fair for everyone. This is one sport that development through R&D makes in not a level playing field as someone is always going to have a faster car for whatever reason that might be.
