Benefits Of Reading And Being Multi Lingual 📚 Focus On The Possibilities and Not The Problems

A few weeks ago I read a news article, wherein the local public library is stating their concern about how the current generation of children is reading less nowadays. They are also worried that kids would rather express themselves in English than the Dutch language, which is the formal written and spoken language in Suriname.

Though I understand the concern about people (especially with kids) reading less - because multiple studies have already proven the benefits of reading, like stimulating cognitive functions, increase of vocabulary and stimulating grammar, aiding in intellectual development, the positive effects on mental health, etc. - I don't agree with the arguments made in defense of the Dutch language.

Studies have already proven the advantages of being bilingual or even multilingual, like for instance improving communication skills and/or stimulating cognitive and sensory processing and reducing age-related decline in the older population. Not to mention that we're living in a globalized world, in which speaking more than one language offers people more opportunities.

Another argument made by the library board, is the use of technology and devices by young children and their access to mainstream social media, also play a part in the decline of reading. On the one hand I get their concern - because as an avid reader I love the turning of the pages and the smell of the paper - but on the other hand I belief that those devices could be used as tools, rather than be seen as a nuisance and distraction.

There are applications and videos that could playfully teach children love for reading. If the library personnel is smart enough, they should invest in going online. Yes, the public library is desperate for money, but I belief that there are ample possibilities if they write a good project plan and collaborate with partners.

And if I can use myself as an example, I've grown up watching television - with mostly English movies and tv-series - while I was also a member of the public library and have read countless books, magazines, etc. in my day. Thanks to all this exposure I can express myself fluently in both languages and I've noticed that I can easily switch (focus) from one task to another (cognitive ability).

That is why I can't fully support the arguments made by the local library and suggest that they should look further than the problems they have raised. But what do you people of Hive think? Let me know in the comments below. 🤓

The library seem to be somewhat stuck in what they know !LOL. They need to figure out how to evolve what they know along with modern technology. Paper is out and digital is in, but that doesn't have to mean the end of reading as a whole.

Hive is a good example of digital reading and writing possibilities.

Hivebits blends Hive's blockchain and Bitcoin's ethos. Your effort = your reward. Mine HBIT simply 1-per-day with (no space): ! hivebits or ! HBIT or ! hbit or $ hbit.
Success! You mined .9 HBIT and the user you replied to received .1 HBIT on your behalf. You can receive 100% of the HBIT by replying to one of your own posts or comments. Or, support Hivebits at the official HBIT mine | your wallet | market | tools | connect | <><

This confirmation reply will go off when Resource Credits (RCs) get low. Yet, your hivebits command will still go through and you'll get your HBIT. :)

I get that it's easier to teach young kids reading with physical books or tools, but there are options to do part of it virtually.

Hive is a good example of digital reading and writing possibilities.

True, we've seen firsthand that a couple of kids, are trying their writing abilities under supervision here on the Hive blockchain.

I dont know if people find track useful while reading but, I would say reading the book while listening to the audio book if you suffer from ADD like me. The experience is truly magical.

Ah, here's another perspective. Thank you for sharing your side, because often when we write "generally" about something, we tend to forget those unique cases such as yourself.

Audiobooks are also an option for people with sight impairments and then there are also other options and tools. Libraries should really think more out of the box, because there are enough kids who have no access to those options I've mentioned or have no access to buying books themselves.

Dutch is the official language! Ok I’m doing a deep dive on Suriname one of these days! I had no idea there was a country in Central America that still spoke Dutch.

The internet allowed me to explore myself and to become capable of slipping in and out of different worlds.

I was one of the first people who grew up with the internet as a social tool because a computer was all I ever wanted before they were in every home. Immediately I was talking to people around my home country and later the world. I learned more on the internet than school by far!

I think it’s still massively underrated in it’s important, even if people say it’s the most important development of our generation. We still haven’t really scratched the surface. I feel like we were in alpha until recently and now with crypto we are entering beta.

I need to write a post on this!!!

Funny how I see your train of thought in this comment 😂. My head works the same, but I don't put it in the comment section or I try to curb it 😅.

I grew up with the tv and that's how I learned about much of USA (Western culture), but I agree the majority of information I get nowadays is from the internet.

I think we're the only country in South America still speaking Dutch, together with the "Caribbean" islands Curacao, Aruba and St. Maarten.

This video gives an acceptable summary about Suriname:
