Are You A Citizen Of Hive Or A User?

Things are changing at a rapid pace. The advancement of technology, especially as it pertains to IT, is amazing. Within 10 years, we are going to see progress that completely alters society.

Whether this is a good thing or not is up to debate. Nevertheless, we cannot dispute the power of some aspects to artificial intelligence. Machine learning is moving ahead in an unprecedented manner. The recent release of ChatGPT reveals how natural language tools are changing the way we engage.

In other words, the digital world is expanding. There appears to be little evidence that shows this realm will not be a larger part of our overall lives in the future.

For many of us, Hive is already a home. There are a lot of analogies that we toss out regarding this ecosystem. However, in this article, we will explore an idea that I think captures the essence of what we are dealing with and how things could unfold going forward.

The Network-State

The concept of the decentralized network-state was something we discussed over a year ago. It followed up on the idea of the transition away from the nation-state. Obviously, these are long-term views that will take more than a half century to materialize.

However, that does not preclude is from thinking about and, to some degree, implementing the foundation that these will be built on. In fact, a case could be made that Hive is already doing this.

If we look at this ecosystem through the lens of present day nation, we can see how much of what that entity provides can be replaced. Basically, we are embracing the idea the digital world is going to become a bigger part of our daily lives.

In these articles, the topic of the Hive economy comes up. This is important. Once a community (ecosystem, project) is monetized, it can form an economy. Businesses are built that generate revenues. This is similar to what takes place in the physical world. The only difference is geography plays no part in this.

Another breakthrough is that the network-state is completely voluntary. Nobody is forced to be a part of Hive unlike the nation-state. Under that scenario, where one was physically born has great bearing on what kind of life he or she can lead. Talk about the Lucky Sperm Club lottery.

Since there is no volunteerism under this system, it is ripe for corruption. Leaving is difficult due to the fact that one has to physically relocate. Then, to compound matters, both countries, the exit and entry, make it even more difficult with regulations. It is easy to see how people conclude this is a form of slavery.

With the network-state, relocation is simple. It is only the matter of a few clicks of a mouse and one is "residing" elsewhere. Therefore, the network-state has great fluidity as compare to the nation-state. For this reason, it has to better serve the needs of the members.

A lot of this has been written about before. Social media giants like Facebook, Twitter, and YouTube can be considered loose forms of this idea although they are centralized network-states. It is debatable how much of a step forward they really hare.

That said, the decentralized network-state is a radical transformation.

The Hive Citizen

Many ask what it will take for Hive to attract more users. As we progress down the concept being put forth here, it is easy to see how this is the wrong mindset.

Users are akin to like being part of a population. Many countries are seeing the start of the downfall because of this important idea.

Being part of a population means you are physically among a group. However, identification can be completely different. We also have the fact to be part of that group carries no responsibility. One is simply there trying to extract the benefits the nation provides.

This is a marked difference from being a citizen. When one operates under this framework, the benefits of the system are available. However, in addition to this, there is great responsibility upon each person. Here is where ideas such as dedication and commitment enter.

Therefore, Hive actually does not require more users. We have seen what happens when this occurs. There was a time where the number of active accounts was much higher. What did the ecosystem look like? It was actually filled with more who were simply extracting from the system.

Contrast that with some of the most dedicated people involved with Hive. Picture in your mind how they operate compared to the ones just described. Here is where the idea of citizen enters.

Hive simply needs to bring in more citizens. When people understand we are seeing the formation of a decentralized network-state, then they can be attracted to totality of what is built developed. This is not just some social media or blogging platform. It is much bigger than that.

What Does It Mean To Be A Citizen?

Here is where the proverbial rubber meets the road.

A great deal of this starts with the ownership mindset. There is a great deal of difference between how a business owner looks at something compared to an investor. With Hive, it is imperative to have the mindset of ownership.

We also have to take responsibility for the path forward. There are many areas where one can impact this, all of it stemming from action. One variable in any type of "state" is the idea of governance.

Decentralized network-states are a possibility because of the governance models we started to create. As people work to garner influence, they become a larger part of the governance system. This is a major difference between a citizen and a user. The latter simply shows up, not really caring too much about what makes the ecosystem successful.

Again, we have to lose the extractor mindset.

The desire for improvement is also vital. Users are there for the moment, taking whatever they can get out of it. A citizen understands the long term nature of things. Sure, it is possible to exit a digital platform in an instant. However, if the citizenship mentality is there, we will see the desire to improve the system. Certainly not all will agree with new ideas but the overall attitude of each participant wanting things to get better should not be questioned.

Finally, in spite of our differences, there is a common bond that unifies all who are part of this network-state. Being a part of the Hive nation is important to people. We see this in Ghana, Venezuela, and Nigeria. To them, this is an opportunity not presented in their present nation-state.

This is something to be celebrated and built upon. Being a citizen of Hive comes with enormous opportunity and benefits. It also carries with it a great responsibility. While we want large numbers, it is far more important to find people with the proper mindset.

As one member of our community says, the ride or die attitude.

This is a lot bigger than a new social media application.

There's a lot to think deeper about in this post. The way to handle the citizenship is a bit too loose for my taste. Funny idea to define a country without borders.

What would you see the DAO doing in a Network state?

I'd like to consider myself a citizen here. I know I just moved in recently but it feels like home already. Came here to build by providing insight and guidance to others. I hope to provide value, and attract people more people here to do the same.

To me, the idea of ownership is the most exciting prospect on hive and this is basically because of the opportunity to build, own, buy and stake the on-chain assets to impact or influence what's happening here. We might not be bound by anything geographical, but the digital bond is second to none.

Great way to put it - Hive Citizen - and I think I am living quite a bit of my life in this ecosystem and being quite active and building a future for myself here, thus I think I might have earned this title.

Well honestly, I'm not sure if can fully consider myself as a citizen of Hive yet. Maybe I am still a high school student, who's still trying to figure out what role I want to take in this country called Hive. My hive account is already more than a year old, but I haven't really been actively using it aside from Splinterlands then, and mostly Risingstar now. I'm still in the process of understanding this country - the Hive ecosystem.

Not all citizens will grow up to be Mayor.

Using the blockchain games is a very important "job" if we don't have users to our dapps, we may as well not have dapps.

Especially, if you keep all the HIVE POWER you earn locked up and growing.

It's the first time I read about the concept of network-state and it is something I never considered: it looks very interesting as it put the focus on one of the most crucial aspect of Hive, i.e. the need for people who want to built something here and that see Hive as something they should take care of.

As in most cases, what Hive needs is quality, not quantity, even in its userbase: where there's quality, quantity will follow.

Hence the importance of the projects which aim to onboard new users: teaching them on what Hive is, how it works, what can you achieve with it, these are all crucial steps to introduce good citizen to the ecosystem.

The mindset carries all the difference between the user and the citizen. The latter will choose to invest (in any shape or form) in the growth of the network. I think Hive serves as a good prototype in building the network state and it could evolve to become one.

I fully agree with the conclusion you made in your post.

I feel like a citizen of Hive and I believe it is necessary to invest in our ecosystem not only in purely economic terms but also in building something great from many other points of view.

To do this, I think it is natural that everyone must assume their own responsibilities; on the other hand, in any self-respecting community there are not only rights and opportunities but also duties and responsibilities.

Thanks for the nice reflection.

Wow, the title alone roped me in. I've always felt a strong sense of ownership on Hive that I never felt on the parasitic Blogger platform. The idea of a Network-State truly crystallized what it means to be all-in and have skin in the game, as opposed to being an extractive leecher like some.

Contributing to LeoFinance #threads, sharing thoughtful comments and creating insightful blog posts to help populate the platform with content irregardless of upvotes in order to help bring in new citizens.

That's what makes for a true citizen of Hive and how we keep the ball rolling in building the first Network-State on the blockchain. Count. Me. In.

I consider myself a Citizen and as asset to the blockchain.

I am not a daily blogger like some, but I am an "often enough" curator.

Most of all - I keep my HIVE POWER where it belongs, locked up in my wallet and used to encourage other projects.

I agree with you, we need more citizens, also, more readers.

This is actually the best article I have read today both on and off of hive. Boss @taskmaster4450 you are indeed a great writer not just writing but making sense. Right from the beginning of the article till the end it's quite more powerful.

Right from where you said this;

Once a community (ecosystem, project) is monetized, it can form an economy.

This being one with a great thinking out of it from me. This answers some questions in my way of thinking much more to the labour market and business at large.

The desire for improvement is also vital. Users are there for the moment, taking whatever they can get out of it. A citizen understands the long term nature of things. Sure, it is possible to exit a digital platform in an instant. However, if the citizenship mentality is there, we will see the desire to improve the system.

Much more you again nailed it here again. One mindset matters in this, this leaving much deep question for me to answer if am truly a hive citizen or user.

I just want to be a hive citizen,😭😭😭😭😭😭😭, just hope I can settle some things up here with me and embrace hive the more.

Thanks for this article again boss. You are a mentor.

I'm learning and shifting my mindset from a user to a citizen .. I'm here for the long term... I'm here for the growth of the platform. Nice article boss

I feel myself already a Hive citizen. My daily routine has changed. I'm having more time here that in other networks that once were my favorites, like Twitter. Hive is not a hope but a reality, a better reality, although as we know it's not perfect.

I was by the Hive subreddit today with a comment about Hive and the approach to political content by big curation projects. I think there is an issue --talking obviously from my perspective and interest-- to discuss. Best regards.

citizen means “slave” / “chattel” / “employee” / “public servant”, i believe! ⛓

i am no citizen, resident, slave to any ENTITY. i am Spirit represented as i: man of mankind… not a hue-man being… a Spiritual Being man. 🤲

I'd say that I am a citizen. I actively vote on the governance and direction the chain is taking. I also give back to the other members of the chain through upvoting and curating. If I were just here playing Splinterlands I would consider myself just a user.

There is a great deal of difference between how a business owner looks at something compared to an investor. With Hive, it is imperative to have the mindset of ownership.

This is a great piece of wisdom. I have been acting as an owner of many projects I have been involved with. Most of them are built on HIVE. It is easy to become an owner HIVE. The barrier for entry is very low. All one needs to do is make some comments on HIVE to get started. The eventual upvotes will award them a stake in the platform. From then on, they will own a part of HIVE and be a part of HIVE.

I knew from the very first week that this is my home now. I never posted anything on web2 before but Hive changed it for me. Ownership of the content is what I love most about Hive and being a citizen here is so valuable.

Sincerely, there is more to gain in the idea of ownership than just being a user who only comes for a short period and leaves, not minding the success of the system. There are lots of prospects in being a citizen than the user.

Did you just listen to the recent Jordan Peterson podcast? Lol he talks about this very same thing and I was going to post about it hahah you beat me to it, that’s cool!

Yeah I agree that we need far more citizens than we do users/leeches. That’s why it’s important to try and bring people under our wings if we think we’ve found a good egg so that we can foster a positive relationship. I’ve tried that and had some decent success with a few handfuls of people over the years! It’s nice to see them around their corners and flourishing.

I would say that I am a citizen because I plan on staying. I just wonder whether or not there will be some restrictions when network states get implemented.

To be frank, you are simply saying those who invest in hive are citizens and those who mainly just earn rewards are users, if so I will love to be a citizen seeing how much hive is adding to people's life, it is a platform which employ people to be self employed control all their asset, utilize thier opportunity and still give them business knowledge.

Hive is a social network that encompass all areas of life, everyone kind of crowd exist under this platform from the flashy type to the calm and many more. Thanks for sharing.

Definitely... if people are genuinely interested in being a part of something special, it doesn't matter their physical location. They will change Hive, and Hive will change them.
