Who Are The "Best In" Music History

▶️ Watch on 3Speak

We will do something different today. In this video I provide a list of what I think the Best All Time is in different areas of music.

It would be fun to see what others think and how their opinion differs.

The categories are:

Best Male Voice
Best Female Voice
Best Group/Band
Best Lead Guitarist
Best Drummer
Best Front Man/Woman
Most Innovative

What are your choices?

Male Voice: Gotta go with Elvis. Great range and expression. Although I also admire Freddy Mercury's unique vocal qualities. Both were one-of-a-kind voices.
Female voice: Aretha Franklin is G.O.A.T and Karen Carpenter gets runner up for having a uniquely beautiful voice.
Best Group/Band: My favorite of all time has got to be Rush--I could listen to 2112 over and over.
Best Guitar: Hendrix is in a class by himself. Most underrated guitarist? Glen Campbell. Ever heard him play The William Tell Overture while holding the guitar behind his head? Genius.
Best Drummer: I agree, Neil Peart.
Front Man: Prince. The man was a showman, through and through. His Superbowl show was a love offering to his fans.
Most Innovative: I go with Styx. Why? They had Tommy and JY switching selflessly between lead and rhythm guitar and writing amazing songs as well as Dennis DeYoung writing and playing keyboards and those Panozzo twins keeping the rhythm. Their Grand Illusion album was genius and I saw them on the Paradise Theater tour--wonderful live showmen. Did NOT like the silly jumpsuits on the Mr. Roboto tour, though. :)

I am with you on 2112, a great album. One of the most overlooked albums of all time.

Even Tommy Shaw said he got tired of writing songs and thinking of things relating to robots. That was not one of their finest moments.

Every band seems to have that one album that's just not as good as the others, e.g. St. Anger, Mr. Roboto, etc.

Man, 10 years ago I would've gone on a rant for days on any one of those topics, but these days I just can't give a fuck. I still love good music, but I feel like I wasted so much time sifting through so much garbage to find so little gold, relatively speaking, I don't really think about it anymore.

Ask me who the best Hive dev is, or why any given community is succeeding or not. !LOL

Well if this isn't a plot twist.

Having been a hip hop head most of my life idk enough about most of those categories but for engagement I'll answer with Bob Marley and the Wailers.

Should cover most ground.😂

And as for best female voice I'll have to agree with Whitney Houston. I still get shivers when I listen to her classics.

I think this is hard to answer, since styles are so different - and there isn't just modern "popular" music. What about classical artists? We haven't heard the voices of those singers and it is not clear how they would do in this rating. So I am narrowing it down to the "modern" artists - and I am not sure, if I would pick the same people in a year as well, some of them definitely, but others maybe not. And of course, it is always just a subjective opinion, hard to measure in objective manner, who really is the greatest.

Best male voice: Yeah, Freddy Mercury is really on top, although I like Elvis as well.
Best female voice: I really like Lauren Daigle and Adele, but Ella Fitzgerald has also an amazing voice.
Best Group / Band: High on the list, definitely Queen and the Rolling Stones

Best guitarist: Definitely Santana

Best drummer: Neil Peart seems a really good choice, but I am not an expert.

Best fron man: Elvis or Freddy

most innovative: Michael Jackson was brilliant in what he did

Others to mention: I think that people like Bach, Beethoven and Mozart where some of the greatest composers, Chopin and Liszt are probably some of the best for piano, paganini for the violin, I love Widor on the Organ, and the orchestral pieces of Vivaldi. Hans Zimmer and John Williams are amazing regarding their film music.
And then their are crazy people like Schoenberg, well I don't really like his music, but he has some genius as well.

Well, as already said, it is quite subjective, but that seems a good selection in my opinion.

Cheers,
@andy-plays

I agree, I assumed modern music. I considered Michael Jackson, too. I remember sitting in front of the TV waiting for the premiere of the "Thriller" video.

If we include all times and genres, Beethoven has got to be the GOAT. If he had done only the Choral Symphony, that would have been enough, but he did so much more. And he did his best work while deaf.

Yeah, there haven't been a lot of drummers in earlier periods although some kind of percussion did exist even back then.

Yeah, Beethoven is really one of the greatest. I loved playing the Moonshine Sonata on piano. And when we did the 9th symphony with our choir and orchestra - it was like in a dream (although a lot more work than in a dream).

I really cannot imagine, how he did it, but yeah, his later works are some of the best in music history!

Cheers,
@andy-plays

As someone who is easily distracted, I have wondered if the deafness eliminated all distractions and enabled him to hear only what he played in his head. What a Joy that you got to perform the 9th Symphony. Did you do it auf Deutsch or in English translation?

That could really be the case. As far as I know, this is also the reason why blind people do have better hearing in many cases or other abilities (my most feared chess opponents have been blind people).

We did it in German (I am German, living in Germany, so it was the natural choice).
Are you German as well? Just a wild guess from your name 😂

My German ancestors came to Pennsylvania in the late 1700s, same time as my French ancestors landed in South Carolina. The Scots-Irish ancestors were already here. I learned German in school in Indiana. I can read it and can understand most of a German movie, but I need a lot of work on my speaking skills, and my writing skills are kindergarten level, at best. I can go German to English, but the reverse is much harder.

My husband is more German than I, because his ancestors from Germany came in the late 1800s. One of his grandfathers said his prayers in German, did everything else in perfect English.

Also, my husband studied Spanish in school. Only German he knows is Octoberfest, die Wurst...

Hey @taskmaster4450,

I have also been posting out of my element these days, which is also music related.

I ended up with this priceless guitar pick collection. Been trying to share them on #hive

I'm six posts in now.

Here's the first one

https://peakd.com/music/@dylanhobalart/my-guitar-pick-collection-episode-1-david-bowie-2003-reality-tour-s

Something that I've been thinking about in doing this, with the world changing with the COVIDs, it's hard to tell if the great reset will involve World tours again. Covid's changed a lot of things, live performances, World tours, epic performances. Changed forever?

Also, thanks for all you do on the hive!!!!
