What Is The Metaverse And How Can We Prepare?
The Metaverse is being discussed a great deal more. Of late, many of the mainstream publications started to pick up on this idea. Both Facebook and Microsoft mentioned it on their earnings calls.

But what is the Metaverse? Is this something fictional or will it evolve into something real?
There is a lot of confusion about the subject so we will delve into it. That said, we are seeing some of the early pieces going into place.
To start, we must realize this is mostly in the conceptual stage. Hence it is going to be a long time before this idea emerges in practical form. In fact, there will be iterations of it since it is dependent upon technological development.
We can look at it this way:
Full simulation Metaverse where people have a choice of where they are spending their lives: Mid-to-late century
Immersive gaming-like experience that incorporates work, play, entertainment, and socialization: mid 2030s
3-D Based Internet
One of the major premises that we are about to see emerge is the idea of the Internet moving from a flat screen to 3-D. Through mixed reality, Hololens™, or even BCI, how we interact is going to change.
This alone is going to open up the door to many possibilities. Obviously, it takes gaming to a completely new level. Graphics improved a great deal over the last few decades to the point where they are near cinema quality. VR will only push this further ahead, enriching the experience.
Augment Reality (AR) is also going to have a huge impact. This will be the bridge between the physical and digital worlds. Many are debating AR versus VR which is pretty inane. Both are going to be part of the next couple decades.
The transition to 3-D is going to remove the wall between us and the Internet. Instead of it being "out there" it is something we are a part of. It will be all around us along with being ubiquitous.
Hence our relationship to it is going to be radically altered.
Contact Among Individuals
Another major concept of the Metaverse is the idea that we can interact directly with large numbers of people. This is what will make it "life-like". It is also what will delay the full implementation of it.
Our present Internet architecture is not designed for this kind of experience. It was created in a manner that connects node-to-node. Hence, we have single connections at a time.
Even if we look at something like Facebook, that is built using this same architecture. Even if you are interacting with hundreds of "friends", in reality you are just interacting with the Facebook server as are they. All interactions are on a one-to-one basis albeit at high speeds.
One of the features many cite in the Metaverse is to have a *virtual concert. The idea is that a virtual arena can house hundreds of thousands of people (avatars).
Here is a prime example of where progress needs to occur. At a concert, we can interact with all those around us. We get the experience of everyone at the same time, not just the one person next or in front of us. With the present architecture, this is not possible.
It is going to take decades before we see the new development of protocols that can handle it. So far, few can even imagine what that will look like.
Quantum Computers
We know this is a technology that is getting a lot of attention. Quantum Computers are no longer theory. A number were constructed and used for basic quantum purposes. Thus, they are a reality, albeit in the embryotic stages.
The challenge now is to scale them along with bringing down the cost. Much of this decade and into the next will be spent on this. At the same time, we will start to see applications developed.
Quantum will take us to a radically different computing realm. To start, it will provide a lot more horsepower. This is vital for the Metaverse. With all that is imagined, there is no way we would get there with classical computers.
If also is believed Quantum Computers will give us processes that are impossible right now. There are theories that quantum is the basis for the evolution of the universe. Hence, if we can capture the process, we can replicate that, but at a much faster and deterministic pace.
Being able to do this will be vital to long-term vision of the Metaverse. There is still considerable questions to what is possible and what we can achieve with quantum. Since we are at the early stages, much of what is discussed is theoretical.
Blockchain And Cryptocurrency
Here is an area that many of us are familiar with. It is also a large piece of this idea of the Metaverse.
Blockchain is going to be a foundation. We need a way to record data in a much different manner. If we are moving away from the node-to-node only idea, then server-based systems will not work. Therefore, something different is required.
When we utilize blockchain, we instantly have the ability to transmit value. This was the development of cryptocurrency. At the same time, the storage mechanism also makes it the ideal technology for "ownership rights". Here again, we see how NFTs fit into the picture.
While many in the present system dismiss cryptocurrency, it is an essential part of the next generation Internet. This is a technology that was developed in the digital realm. We see nothing physical about it. That is what is required to serve in this new arena.
Our current monetary system was established based upon physical attributes and then converted to digital. While it worked to some degree, there are many shortcomings. Cryptocurrency does not have that issue. It is already set up in the digital realm and can easily evolve into the virtual. Already, those discussing the Metaverse are pointing to the need for NFTs.
A Completely New Realm
There is little dispute that the Internet changed the way we work, socialize, entertain, and communicate. The online world is not something that is unfamiliar to most. We saw a blending of the two with much of our physical realm converted. Shopping is a prime example where a large portion of all is done online.
The Metaverse will duplicate this outcome, taking things to another level. We are going to emerge from separate entities to a blending of things. What people term Web 3.0 is an early stage iteration of this entire concept.
We are going to see a realm that is built upon blockchain, accessed via VR devices, powered by Quantum Computers, and have AI running all throughout. These technologies will likely converge around the mid 2030s to really created a new Internet. It is going to become experiential in nature.
The Play2Earn is a preliminary concept that applies to the world being described. It is an idea that is already shifting the lives of people. In a few years, it will be a common approach. Tens of millions are likely to be earning their living off this environment. There are those in the younger generation who will never have a traditional job.
Technological acceptance is still generational. Those who grew up in the time of vast technological change are more apt to embrace newer way of doing things. One of the reasons why online shopping rates increased so much is because of the death of older people. Those were the ones who were still shopping in physical stores exclusively. The Boomer generation, while not completely all in on technology, did spend much of their careers using computers as opposed to the generation ahead of them. Now that they are taking over as the older generation, at least a portion of their transactions are online.
Industries will be changed by the Metaverse. Many will find they are not suited for that environment. We are also going to see a shift. For example, television and films are going to be harmed by the advancements in gaming. As we enter a 3-D realm, gaming will enable us to be a part of the experience. Instead of watching, we will be participating and creating. This is why gaming companies are likely to outpace traditional media outlets that focus upon video.
Those who are involved in cryptocurrency are going to have a head start in the understanding of what is unfolding. Those who amass holdings in this area are going to find themselves positioned to take advantage of opportunities as they are developed.
We are watching something that is going to, eventually, be interoperable. The key will be when gaming pieces, or at least the value in them, can be transferred from game-to-game. Thus, more wealth will be created as walls fall between the different corporate gardens that we see in place now.
At this point, the framework that most have of this concept is limited. Most point to something like Ready Player One* as an example. While that is true, it is only a part of this. The Metaverse is going to be something much bigger.
What we are seeing today is akin to Prodigy or CompuServ. Those were early Internet companies that were highly successful as things starting to get going. In time, they ended up failing. Games such as Splinterlands and Axie Infinity are trailblazers in a similar fashion. We will see if they can keep evolving and developing to remain an important part of the blockchain gaming world.
Either way, the process is started. By the end of this decade, it will become a lot clearer where this all can go. For the present moment, too many technologies need advancing before we can even thing about the Metaverse as something realistic.

I upvoted you, thank you for posting! 👍
I have been fully engaged in the metaverse since 2014 when I found crypto and realized the entire social construct of human society was a hallow joke destined for failure or worse, nuclear war.
These fucktards can bomb themselves all dead and I will just feel my skin melt when one of their stupid bombs hits me.
I have become more miserable, but at least I am never mad at the audacity of other human beings, just my own reflection gets to me sometimes.
Never having to see or hear about religion has eased my nerves alot but lately a cesspool of arrogant Christians have been getting into alt tech because they are too stupid to make their own blockchains social network... kind of sad with all the mechanical Babylon images in memes lol the world they made is a joke.
I first encountered the idea of the metaverse in Neal Stephenson's novel Snow Crash. This concept is clearly a social version of William Gibson's cyberspace. The metaverse will likely come into full realization when we merge neurally with virtual reality, but the building blocks are now beginning to fall into place, as you describe in this post.

.Great article, your ideas about VR and AR makes me bullish on Theta, which is on of the projects I have invested in
I am not familiar with that one but it is a great field. Of course, picking winners and losers is often difficult.

Technology makes the future interesting. The only reason I want to live for another 70 years is to see how crazy technology gets. I'm ditching my biological body first chance I get. Upload me into the cloud.
In 70s year that might be possible. Of course, once you do that, you will have immortality as such.
At least that is how present day thinking goes. We have a long way to go before you are uploaded I would believe.

Which is why I suggest getting involved early will be hugely profitable down the line. Imagine giving someone who’s never used a mobile phone or a computer an apple laptop, it’s going to take a whole lot of time to figure it out, but most of us have moved from simple dial up phones to Symbian powered phones to where we are now. Any other powerful mobile phone tech that comes out will be easily swallowed up, same thing applies to blockchain tech and all the relevant tech mentioned in this post. Get involved now.

Also think of how much of a change that was in each of our lives.
Cryptocurrency and all that goes along with it, leading towards the Metaverse will certainly have a major impact on all of our lives.

I think by that time, some of us will choose to live basic and organic life style where we are disconnected from the internet but connected socially.
There will likely be a choice that people can make. We shall see.
So much is just conceptual at this time. We are not even near the point of full immersion VR let alone streaming one's entire life.

I think with the acceleration of R&D it might be closer than we think.
i'm not commenting your post frequently, i read them though most of the times
this one was not only interesting reading it
it stimulated my mind and in a way i really felt this metaverse energy
the new realm is coming, revolution is coming through this realm , i think we will be ready for this change

The technology we have today is already powerful compared to the past and moving at a faster pace than before. This is actually in keeping with what many theorize about the universe, that it is expanding at an accelerating rate.
Makes me wonder where we will be in 20 years.

@taskmaster4450 if we compare how today's world is different from the world we have 15 to 20 years ago, we can easily understand how much developments and innovations are going to happend in the future, it may not same as planned but definitely its totally different and upgraded from today's world
Go back further. Compare today's world to 1980 and see the difference. Forty years is not a long time in the grand scheme of things (one generation's working career basically) and most everything is different.
We will likely see that same jump in the next 20 years.

I agreed with you Sr. It took less time now because we have better resources for research and development as compared to 1980s

There is one contradiction in the listed technologies (as it seems to me). The value of cryptotechnologies is their security, the impossibility of hacking with existing computing technologies (infrastructure). And quantum computers can solve this "problem" of security :(
So, I would not like quantum computers to become publicly available before I earn a million on the crypto :D
Interesting thoughts on the matter. Makes me think that the would will be how i build it in my mind....as long as i do not spill water all over the motherboard, it will survive.
I heard about this topic today while listening to a podcast. The idea sounds pretty cool and I think is where we are heading in the future. However, I don’t like the idea of big tech companies ruling the metaverse.
I hope we can rule our own metaverse with DAOs, tokens and blockchain.

Very interesting! Thank you for an amazingly well written article! Very insightful and interesting! Keep up the good work! :)
Clearly one of the better articles on this area that I have ever read. I do not regret for an instant that I put my money where my mind has drifted. Well done, please write more like this 🥇👍

Excellent post, much more than informative it seems visionary, when reading my brain could not resist to imagine scenarios in this new universe that awaits us in a few years, but I also could not resist to think about the social changes that will happen, beyond people who are born with technology and we adapt easily to its changes, what may or may not happen with this population that is lacking education in these areas? I can not help but wonder if there will be significant and real changes in government or education to adopt and accept this new reality, in short, it will be very interesting all this new issue at the social level!
Thank you for this wonderful post, success !

but....but, but.....how can we prepare???

where everything begins and everything ends!
thankyou for this : )

You already are. The fact that you are on blockchain and involved in cryptocurrency gives you a leg up. These are going to be at the foundation of much of what is taking place going forward.
We are seeing things changing dramatically. Being aware of how technology is altering things is vital. It will affect our jobs, investments, and the way we interact with others.
This is a repeat of the Internet, except on steroids. It will be 100x-1000x more impactful.

To me, Upland is a working metaverse but as you say, a lot of innovation is needed to begin to see its true purpose and what makes it exciting. Nevertheless, the layering of Google street view along with meta buildings is a peak at the potential down the road.
It is similar to Marvel comics, a departure from the real world which remains as the skeleton of the metaverse.

Thanks for giving your thoughts and speculations about this topic. I am interested in it, not because I am falling in love with the theme but have quite some difficulties with it. Call me old fashioned in this respect, that would fit me.
I have to admit that I reject this idea out of hand and it looks to me not only absurd but also like an expensive diversions. Why would one want to make a VR or an AR as true to reality as possible when there is already a reality that exists of a biological-material-cultural kind? ... Or is this concept of physical reality therefore abandoned because it has become too boring, too safe, too restrictive in the real world? ... The sensible thing to do then would not be to flee into a far more drastic dependency, but one that brings us back to the earthly ground, no?
After all, these fleshly bodies want to be nourished, they need to be provided with food, water, warmth, shelter and so on. I don't quite understand in what way such a metaverse is supposed to produce anything positive for the relationships between human beings when we pretend that we are not of flesh and blood but are ourselves made of computer code?
Do you think people would then have two lives? One in the sad world of fleshly existence and one, exciting, vibrant and beautiful in the other? Then what is the point of being human at all? Even in my day, when television was still in its infancy, people said that too much of it was not conducive to living life.
I don't share the enthusiasm. It is as if it has been accepted that the material world, in which culture is bound to the real sensory experiences of eating, drinking, preparing and sharing meals, giving birth and dying to real human bodies, can be substituted by virtual experiences. But can it and shall it? Not to mention the amount of energy such a quantum computer would need. Where is this massive energy to be generated from?
Bitcoin mining alone is said to consume an incredible amount of electricity. But perhaps futuristic minds would also like to make themselves available as biological energy units, no? how is that supposed to happen?
Language can only be learned in connection with a fleshly body, the relationship between parents and a baby needs time, attention, social encounters with other people in reality. Interprating other people means to learn reading their body language, so how will one solve the "problem" of raising babies?
The natural will to procreate or drive is inherent in the human being. At least until it is disturbed to such an extent that sexual relations are considered disreputable, dirty or otherwise disease-provoking. How long our biological existence can be suppressed without crippling it, I don't know. Perhaps it is possible and how I perceive it it already happens to be crippled. Personally, I find it sad to watch.
I am now of the generation for whom technological change is happening too fast and too violently as I get older. It is no longer my world and the connections to what I grew up with and was used to seem to be melting away. My hope, therefore, is that I will not have to experience such a metaversum. It is enough for me that my son spends more time in front of the computer than meeting friends in the real world. I can see that the game world is more real for him or more exciting and promising. But I don't approve of it. The generation gap and the fact that parents and grandparents no longer have anything or much in common with young people is a profound problem. It's as if a whole generation becomes obsolete, insignificant, to be ignored in their needs and habits.
So why then shall I want to live up to my seventies or eighties in this respect? Why prolonging my life when I find that what gives and gave me a sense of being alive declines in being worshipped by a tech-enthusiastic current? Would it not then be more practical and sensible for me to die sooner than later? I don't wish to die but this contradiction comes to my mind.
With the metaverse getting so much attention, it is highly likely we see the hype cycle die out. What is not to be overlooked is the fact that we are building Web 3.0, which, I believe, is a foundation, for what will eventually become the metaverse.
This is going to incorporate:
In short, it will be the infrastructure for the metaverse.
Could an application like Leofinance eventually evolve into a metaverse world?

I'm still doing my due diligence on Metaverse concepts, the decentralization aspect is what I'm most interested in seeing. Anything that enables the monopolization or duopolization of commerce, a la Amazon, or advertising, a la Google and Facebook won't solve anything, and their Centralized Metaverses will not get mass adoption from people looking to take control over their own lives.
