Yahoo News: Hive One Of The 5 Potential Facebook Killers

Any news is good news as they say, even if it is Yahoo news.

Earlier this week there was an article posted on the site listing the top 5 Web 3.0 challengers to Facebook.

Hive came in at #5.

The others on the list ahead of Hive: Niche, Authencity, Peepeth, and Steemit.

An interesting list to say the least.

Nonetheless, it is always good to get some recognition even if it is from a source like Yahoo News. The key is that platform does get some recognition and other sites could pick up the article.

Getting some attention is a welcomed sight although the article completely misses the point of Hive. Of course, expecting them to understand is unrealistic. Perhaps Hive made the list because Justin Sun started it or whatever they were asserting in a previous story.

Hive Can Be Much More Than Facebook

Hive is actually much broader than Facebook. The two really do not compare. Even trying to encompass the entire Meta ecosystem, it does not really correlate.

Before getting to that, let us see what Yahoo had to say about Hive.

Hive Blog was launched in March 2020 on the Hive blockchain along with Peakd and Ecency.

It uses HIVE (HIVE-USD) and the Hive Dollars (HBD-USD) stablecoin as its base currencies.

It allows users to publish and monetise their original content as well as join communities, post comments, and manage their wallets all in a decentralised and trustless manner.

Hive Blog content creator Qasim said: "I am a social creature and have a need to express myself. Hive Blog gave me an opportunity to express myself by monetizing my every post, comment and upvote. I feel empowered and free with my voting rights in governance. Hive Blog is not a web3 social media, it's a virtual home for me."

Again, at least no mention of Sun this time.

The key is that Hive is allows for more than was described in the article. We know that gaming is becoming a vital part of this ecosystem. Many still want to focus upon the social media aspects, something that makes sense due to the history. However, it fails to acknowledge the advancements that took place over the last few years.

When we step back, the Decentralized Finance (DeFi) component to this blockchain is equally as important. Hive is actually integrating that into most aspects of the ecosystem. As time passes, there are more choices as to where to put the different tokens and coins received.

The base layer, which handles account management and the core social media functions is intentionally kept lean. Much of the development focuses upon the second layer. Here is where we see the basics of a new financial system forming.

Web 3.0 is much more than just tokenizing social media. This is where it seems many go wrong. The decentralization is certainly an important component. So is the fact that every community, game, and application can become its own economy.

A Hidden Gem

A lot of us express how Hive is a hidden gem. The fact that the article decided to link it behind Steemit is rather laughable. Hive has a lot more going for it than anything tied to that blockchain. What updates have occurred there? While it is not a competition since Sun did truly impact that ecosystem, we can see how many will not alter their perception.

Development is important. We keep seeing statements like this from the latest @blocktrades post:

All-in-all, I suspect we now have the most robust testing environment among all blockchain projects of any complexity. That doesn’t mean it is perfect yet, by any means, and we’re still working thru some bugs like intermittent false positive test failures that sometimes require a test to be run more than once to pass, and we’ve also still got a decent backlog of regression tests to write. But the mirrornet has done a good job at filling the remaining gaps in regression-based tests that still need to be written. [Emphasis mine]

Source

Certainly, I have no capability to confirm or deny the statement. We will have to defer to Blocktrades on that one. The point being he isn't about to put out fluff regarding where things stand. We can take that as a genuine conclusion. Yet there it is written: Hive has the most robust testing environment among all blockchain projects of any complexity.

This is simply another area that it is excelling.

A strong base layer can translate into more powerful Layer 2 solutions.

Building From The Ground Up

We live in a world of instant gratification. With Hive, we are looking at something that is being built from the ground up, designed for long-term sustainability. This is really going to help it to step forward down the road.

We saw what happened when technology cannot handle the traffic. It is great to garner attention and have an application go viral. However, when it takes down the entire chain, that is counterproductive. How long ago did Cryptokitties nuke Ethereum? A they just now are at the point where they are addressing the issue.

Development is not easy.

While Ethereum was working on the Merge, Hive was continuing to move forward. This is an important distinction. There is a lot of attention paid to what is going on there, and for good reason. The money tied to that ecosystem is insane. It is the leader in the world of cryptocurrency when we factor in all the ERC-20 tokens.

That said, Hive is still building some fundamental infrastructure. The fact that we see continued development in areas that are vital is very telling. Sustainability comes from the ability to scale, keep optimizing, and withstand attacks.

From there, the social media and whatever other areas of focus can come into play.

There is a cart and a horse situation here. Hive seems to be addressing them in the proper order.

The fact that the article decided to link it behind Steemit is rather laughable.

Very ridiculous I must say, goes to say a lot is expected when doing research and writing about it.
Regardless some attention is pulled towards Hive. Facebook might be a social media giant but it is nowhere near the capabilities and what can be housed on Hive.

I agree. Hive is more widespread in terms of the potential areas it will impact as compared to Facebook. Blockhchains carry a great deal more potential than we see elsewhere.

Talk about great exposure for Hive...WOW...now to attract the right people as Hive is complicated. I recently joined read.cash and noise.cash which is BCH based but there is no incentive and I do not want to focus my energy on an ecosystem that is not sensical to me. Hive is complicated but once you find the groove and how everything fits together it is fun and rewarding. It also seems to attract people that are trying to escape/avoid our current systems.

I dont see how the business models of those can survive. It is dependent upon people willing to "tip" others. That is just a whale app to get people interested in BCH.

Not a bad idea just unsustainable I believe.

The news doesn't say the key point but at least it creates awareness for anybody reading it on yahoo. Hive is a hidden gem and most of us that join now should build for the future

I was reading a chart a little while ago on Monthly active users per social media platform (in millions):

Facebook: 2,900
YouTube: 2,600
Instagram: 1,500
WeChat: 1,300
TIKtok: 1,000
Twitter: 436

more stats here

I believe HIVE has around 15,000 MAU.

With so much going on on HIVE, we have huge upside potential.

I believe your numbers are in the ball park although Elon would dispute you on the Twitter users. LOL

All seriousness, you are right. We have a ton of upside. Just think if a couple applications got a millions users each. It wouldnt even be on the list there but that would be huge.

well that's still pretty good to see it mentioned there although the post is obviously crap :D

Ah well. It is Yahoo. I am not sure there are any highly profiled writers there.

But it is more mainstream than a blog post so we can use it.

How could they even think of putting Steem above Hive. That’s crazy.

In a clown world where Hive never even gets mentioned, being number five on a list is a huge upgrade.

Agree. One would think that there are some interests going on to maintain this chain unknown for most of the world. Maybe the initiative of Apshamilton with the sues against Facebook and google can change this.

LOL yeah good point. At least it is on the list. Now back to hibernation as Hive wont be mentioned for another 18 months.

I don't know... we did get a surprising amount of press during the hostile takeover.
Random stuff can happen that all of a sudden puts us in the spotlight.
Like if regulators try to crackdown on stablecoins and HBD just sits there untouched.
Ya never know.

The fact that the article decided to link it behind Steemit is rather laughable.

Yes, it is very laughable and shows how this chain is undervalued and unknown to all the media and many crypto users. Hopefully this will attract some new users, the fact that Hive appears in a list like that can be relevant in the long term.

If #Hive is true, let's say that it is still building its path, Web 3.0 will allow us to develop and climb that 5th place

Saw the post from a tweet earlier, wasn't impressed, looking at where hive was listed, it's obvious there almost didn't want to put it in the list.

That said, in coming times, the media will have no choice but to create hive coverage, I personally have been inactively lately because I was working on a new platform that will cover hive-related topics more, just as it covers topics across the ctyptocurrency ecosystem.

icoverage.io, already live and running, created a hive account for it a while ago on hive @icoverage

The plan is to build a much more optimized knowledgebase that actually keeps things true.

To tell the truth, I never sold any of my HIVE holdings and always gathered more and more. Why? Simply because now the inflation supports the rewards pool, but there will be a time when that will bottom down and the price should reach unimaginable levels. Maybe trade a bit, but also continue to stash more and more HIVE.

They had to edit their article after some backlash from the community. Initially, they said Hive.Blog was a relaunch by Justin Sun. :D

Hive definitely has more to offer than some of the other blockchain platforms. Why is Steemit even in the mix? The original errors in the article showed they had not done proper research, but at least they corrected it.

I saw the article but I also think there was a few posts where they wrote wrong information about Hive but it looks like it was corrected. I also think it's laughable that Steemit is ahead of Hive given the development happening here on Hive.

This is one of the better pieces I've read so far on the Yahoo! article, which was a fluff piece. Their intent wasn't to rank the social sites in any order. They just put them in some kind of ranking order, none of them claimed as superior to the others I don't think. The authors probably don't know enough about any of the platforms to suggest that one is better than the rest. They were just making a random list of sites that COULD beat Facebook. Of course, we all know that none of them have even come close.

Usually, when such lists are made, Hive is left off the list and Steemit is included. I was encouraged to see Hive actually make the list, despite the sloppy reporting.

I like that they correctly pointed out that on Hive you own your account and your content, and you can’t get deplatformed.
I believe established YouTubers are bound to YouTube, but the young people may see the logic and choose to build here. As you often say, this article was a step in the write direction. It represents change, but by bit, piece by piece, article by article.

I'm surprised they put a platform with no development over Hive... Someone at Yahoo didn't do their research.
