Hive Goals: A Much Different Approach

This is the time of year when people set goals for the upcoming 12 months. For many, this is a way to help them to remain focused on the tasks ahead. However, there is another set where this is nothing more than a New Year's Resolution, one that will be broken by the end of January.

Personally, I am not one to set goals, especially on Hive. Rather, I am aware of what I am to do each day. The idea of just putting my head down and going for it is more my modus operandi.

Nevertheless, many feel it is helpful and I am always glad when people reach milestones.

That said, maybe we want to take a different slant on things.

Hive Goals

What are the typical goals we see set down?

From what I can surmise they look something like this:

  • 2,500 HP
  • 10,000 LEO
  • 1,000,000 SPORTS
  • 5,000 STEM

People are intent on putting out numbers they want to achieve. While this is admirable, is it missing the point.

These are results. In other words, this is a destination people arrive at. However, we never see people post working goals on Hive. How come we do not set down something along these lines?

The reality is we have no control over whether our account with have 10,000 LEO by the end of the year unless we go out and buy it. Rewards are the result of other people, something we have no control over. Certainly, we can enhance our total through curation, something we have control, yet that will most likely not get us to our destination.

Therefore, can we set something more tangible that can help us along?

Working Goals

Why not set goals that focus upon activity? This is something we can break down into easily managed pieces.

Here is a sample:

  • 365 blog posts
  • 3 videos posted per week

Notice how this focuses upon activity, something we are fully in control of. There are no parameters outside ourselves in achieving these ends.

Obviously, these is broken down into easily managed (and monitored) chunks. When we look at the first one, 365 blog posts breaks down to 1 per day. Did you do the blog post today? It is a very simple process.

With commenting, the 3,650 equates to 10 per day. Did you achieve that?

Notice how this focuses upon the activity one is taking. Here we can easily see if we are on pace to attain our goals. Also, these targets concentrate on consistency, something that is required for long-term success on Hive. Too many one to take the approach of doing things once in a while.

Since consistency is so important, we can break our yearly goals into weekly or daily segments, providing us with the information we require.

Let The Chips Fall Where They May

Take the action and everything else works itself out.

A baseball player who is at the plate knows this. There is a saying: you cannot control the ball once it leaves the bat. The player knows his job is to put a good swing on the pitch. Once the ball is struck, it is out of his control. Sometimes the ball is ripped for a hit; other times it is a hard out.

This analogy applies to what we do on Hive. We cannot control the upvotes we receive, or do not receive. What is within our power is what we post and how frequently. If we set out to do a quality blog post each day, that is something we can attain. It might get a lot of votes, or none.

The point is to set out a roadmap that we can fulfill. We often speak of out comments are a great way to enhance your following on Hive. Yet, I have yet to see someone who posted their commenting goal along with the progress being made. By the same token, I never saw with it posts or videos.

Why not?

I believe we have a situation where people are focused upon the outcome and not the action. For many, this might not be a problem because they have an action plan they follow each day. Personally, I do not have to write out what I am going to do daily or weekly. By this time, it is ingrained in me simply to take the action required.

Nevertheless, for those who are just starting out, take ownership of what you can control. The action you are willing to put forth is going to have a direct result on your outcome. Concentrating efforts there is the way to more success.

You want massive success on Hive? Set down the goal to do 5,000 comments next year. Bear in mind, these are applicable comments, not 5,000 of the "nice post" bullshit so many want to put up. That is going to get you nowhere in my experience.

When I was in the sales game, the top performers never set sales goals. They knew the sales were a result of the action taken. Instead, they set performance metrics based upon number of calls made and presentations done. They knew that if enough calls were made, it would lead to a certain amount of presentations, converting sales.

The results spoke for themselves. However, they focused upon the work to get there, not the outcomes.

I would suggest people take this approach with Hive. Change what you are focusing upon and, over time, I can guarantee you will see your results on Hive change.

Now is the time to set some bold goals.

Anyone up for 730 blog posts in 2022? 500 videos? 7,000 comments?

My goal of 2021 was not achieved. But there has been progress. It is not easy for us to set another goal under the terrorist army. However, I have to try my best.
Thank you so much 💕 Friend.

I think activity based goals are great. Oftentimes, people talk about goals in only a financial sense.. missing the idea that many "success gurus" say which is to do what you love, do it well and have the money come secondary as a result

I believe those financial goals flying in helps in the aspects of minimizing spending. For the most of it, that's what it does, because when you figure there are goals set out to achieve, that's token based, you will in turn not be willing to sell at all instant. It's great tho...

Great perspective over working goals rather than numbers. We need to enjoy the ride as well and not just the destination. For me numbers are more about a wealth status that we want to achieve while that can be obtained in different ways like content creation and curation, but also through Miners, Play2Earn or DeFi and other passive investments. In this context, the numbers make more sense as you cannot express as a working goal that I want to get $1,000 in TribalDex or something alike.

Certainly there are many different aspects to focus upon. We can get rewarded in many different ways. However, that all does break down to activity. For example, to be success on @splinterlands, one better set the goal of playing games each day. To skip that part will means one is not going to enjoy the success he or she hopes.

Perfectly put! That's exactly what I'm focusing on this year: processes, not results. Cheers! !BEER

That would be an interesting way to set goals. I agree that it would be way easier because you have full control over your actions. Of course if you put in enough work, the other rewards naturally show up if you keep up the quality.

Hehe, it's really not easy, I believe what he means is that, these type of goals are not results which needs others input, there are solely dependent on you, so it makes it then a goal you've got to focus on to achieve

MY experience on Hive is the rewards will flow as one focused upon and increases his or her activity.

However, you are right, the point is to focus upon what we can control. Rewards are not really under that other than our own curation.

But we can choose to leave a comment or work a bit harder on our blog posts.

Certainly it is likely the more active one is, the greater the likelihood that success will result. That is in all aspects of life though.

Hive is just a microcosm. Put in the effort and do it consistently and we will see the rewards coming. But that should not be the focus.

And I think it's also healthier. If you want to have your 10000 Leo, you could be tempted to do a lot of quick posts to have the more rewards possible and only concentrate on quantity before quality.

Setting a realistic goal based on your actions is better. If you set a goal at 5 good comments per day you can do it easier.

@taskmaster4450le, You are so right about the control and focus. I know this because I did do goals this pass year that was based on a number of several tokens. A couple of them I made, and a couple of them came very close, and two of them for sure was rather impossible. And yes I found myself buying at least half of those tokens.

When I realized this, I had already decided to set my goals differrently for 2022 but I hadn't really thought about it the way you explained.

730 blog posts, 500 videos, 7,000 comments, Wow that seems like a lot!

I don't think my numbers will be quote that high but I always sey my goals for more then what I believe I can do, more so to push me to do more. While I try to post regularly I know I need to focus on more consistency but find it hard to do a quality post on a daily basis. I'm not a video buff so I know I surley won't be doing that many, as for comments, I rarely find content that sparks a response and I know it's all about my mindset. I believe everyone has a right to their opinion so if I can't relate and positively add to it, I write nothing at all. But if I found the post interesting and don't comment I will at least upvote it and sometimes reblog.

You have given my more to think about here, that's for sure. And just in time for me to write out my goals. Also I write them down to help keep me on track or else I wander all over the place.

Certainly it is and not everyone has the time for that. However, if one sets whatever is reasonable for him or her, perhaps with a bit of a stretch, then we could see much higher numbers.

It would be fun to see people posting ideas such as this, committing to whatever number of comments or posts they want.

A new approach to things.

Yes time is the limiting factor that we all have an equal stake in. So we have to divide our 24 hours up to best suit us.

Many cannot spend the time on Hive they want. This is unfortunate but the reality of the situation for many (if not most).

We simply do what we can.

These are good points but I still feel it's good for people to set goals. However with the understanding that things change over a year and you're going to need to adjust your plan. For instants I wanted to hit 100k hive and 75k leo by end of the year. However CUB launched and Hive prices mooned. NFTs exploded and play2ear exploded as well which greatly pivoted the goals by end of year. These are my main goals for 2022 now to reach but I'm not solely focused on that as I understand things will change again.

Some new goals for me are off of hive now and more about life but I also have bigger goals for Hive once I hit some milestones I set. Those goals are going to be to develop some type of game and launch it on hive no matter how little or small it might be. It's something I want to learn more about and mark it as an accomplishment and move from there based on what I learn from the small launch.

Goal are important it keeps people focused and moving in directions. Without them you end up being all over the place with no clear goal for what you want and that's a dangerous thing that can often get you hyped up into buying every random launch or token and getting scammed. I'm curious to see what others goals are but like you said I hope they are more than just token numbers and instead have larger goals, missions and things they want to achieve.

Thanks taskmaster for the insight. I am also in progress of creating my goal this year, since I wasn't able to hit my 2021 i decided to shift into some actionable plans like hitting top20 for the reports done by asher each week. Currently I am rank 39😅 so I need to do some legwork further.

That is a great target. Those reports are very helpful since they are activity focused.

Keep leaving comments and engaging, it will lead to you moving up the ranks.

Unless of course, those ahead of you kick it into overdrive. Maybe they will not read this post so as to give you a bit of advantage.

Thank you. It puts the proverbial ball in our court.

Focusing upon what we can control is one of the key tenets of stoicism. We tend to spend a great deal of time trying to "fix" what we cannot. On Hive, engagement, i.e. our activity, is certainly within our realm of what we handle.

Much of the other stuff is not.

Ok, finally someone has mentioned this. I thought I was alone not putting out "goals" and my monthly "earnings" etc. That stuff is personal anyway...? It is however great when others put out performance metrics of Hive or Leo members. This is however different and nice to have come through.

I agree with the idea of doing the work and letting that speak for itself over time. In my opinion, goals are personal, although I must admit I like to see how others are thinking in regard to their goals but in all honesty it really has zero bearing in your own journey, perhaps only for motivation.

Making goals public is a great way to aid one in the "commitment". How much weight it truly carries is questionable; I guess that depends upon how much one is willing to consistently bring it up to his or her followers.

Either way, by going about focusing upon activity, we can see how results emerge. People want to set goals on stuff they do not control which makes little sense.

That is the plan, but I'm keeping it in small chunks. Back when this was Steemit, I blogged every day for about nine months and made about 6k. I can't imagine what it would be now! The difference is that I don't have to sell to buy furniture this time!

I honestly didn't know that so many people set their goals in fixed numbers of HP or whatever. How do you achieve 10k LEO by end of 2022 if Leo goes to $3 and your posts start getting 3-4 Leo as rewards?

I was actually aiming for activity-related goals all this time and even though I can't spend as much time here as I would like to, these goals moved me to the Top 10 most active users on Leo.

Anyone up for 730 blog posts in 2022? 500 videos? 7,000 comments?

If everything keeps going as planned I may even raise the stakes on this one, minus the videos.

I agree with you that rather than focusing on the fixed # of HP to earn it's better to focus on your activity related goals. You have less control over the actual payout of the post as opposed to motivating yourself to complete the action of creating a quality post, physically making a specific # of comments etc. Although doing these activities consistently would in most cases lead to higher payouts, getting more followers etc. On a platform like this, the extra rewards would come organically over time. The last couple of weeks I've been making the top 20 most active on the LeoFinance engagement list but I was not really even trying to achieve that status. I've just been enjoying my time here and trying to find like minded people and engage on there posts. I hope you attain your goals this upcoming 2022 !

I was taught a long time ago in the Sales Game it's important to plan S.M.A.R.T.

SPECIFIC
MEASURABLE
ATTAINABLE
REASONABLE
TIMELY

If you write out your goals and they do not pass the litmus test for meeting those categories go back and re-write them so you can actually achieve your goal.

So for instance, making the goal of "doing better on Hive" is way too general and is not a S.M.A.R.T. goal.

"Publishing 730 blog posts in 2022? 500 videos? 7,000 comments in 2022" is S.M.A.R.T. That would come to 2 blog posts per day, making a daily video and on approximately every 3rd day making 2 videos and making just under 20 comments per day.

I also think on a platform like this Consistency is key. It seems to take a while to build an audience and once you do the last thing you want to do is disappear for too long.

If everyone followed the advice in your post, they would be successful and like you mentioned everything else would work itself out. The key is being able to come up with new and fresh content daily and persevering even when your posts are not getting the attention they "deserve". Over time, consistent content creators will gain critical mass.

I'm impressed with the Communities as well as all of the contests that are available to participate in. I think it's a great support system to gain exposure and create prompts for inspiring posts.

P.S.

"Nice Post by the way" haha just kidding

I like the idea behind this, but I also see where the physical numbers can be good. I think about myself for instance. I am already doing what I have determined is acceptable for me and my schedule quantity-wise. Anything more than that and I would be in trouble. At that point I am not sure what I have left. I am going to have to think on that and see if I can figure something out. I know my HP has been growing slower since I started saving all of my HBD.

Wow, this is really a new way of setting targets, I have to admit, this post really gives a new perspective on setting targets other than just focusing on numbers, because I myself have made targets that are only results-oriented, whereas actions are rarely the main focus. It's worth a try.

I think they are both important. Both working goals and staking goals (or performance or profit or whatever else in this direction). Work ethic is critical to achieve something in the long term. At the same time, achieving some milestones in form of HP or tokens held or cards held or profit per day/week/month from gaming can be influenced from both the work ethic AND from investments and redirection of resources for the purpose of achieving the goal.

You are correct Hive Goal Posts seem to be centered on the result of their activities rather than doing the activities themselves.
