What Is The Metaverse?

There seems to be a lot of confusion surrounding the Metaverse. This is something that is feeding into a lot of the hype. We have people making YouTube videos detailing the "Top 5 Metaverse Stocks To Buy". This is a very dangerous situation.

For this reason, I wrote The Metaverse hype in an attempt to dispel a lot of the rhetoric that is out there.

Nevertheless, much of it continues leading the barrage of articles and videos coming.

Therefore, we will look into what the Metaverse is so we can comprehend it.

Dematerialization

This is going to come as a shock to people. Yet, at its core, the Metaverse is nothing more than a shift towards dematerialization. It is the moving away from the physical realm to the digital one.

One way that I like to describe this is bits not atoms.

Of course, under this frame of reference, we can see how this started long ago. Hence, a case could be made that the Metaverse started to form with the Internet. It might be applicable to say that is where the beginnings were forged. When we consider how information was moved from the physical realm to the digital, we see how it fits.

The Internet today is naturally far more advanced than it was a few decades back. This is where the potential is increasing exponentially. We have the infrastructure operating at a much faster pace (cheaper as well). Our communication systems are much improved. Finally, the mediums are superior and more diverse than what was around at the turn of the century.

Bringing it back to the idea of dematerialization, we can see how the idea of virtual worlds enters the picture. Anything we see around us is a candidate to have a "digital twin". This could be something that is part of a game or as a training mechanism for machinery.

When we think about it, this is going to be as radical a shift as the addition of two-way communication to the original Internet.

Spatial

The term "logging on" is now losing its relevance. Many who are older remember a time when you actually logged onto the Internet. In other words, the devices has to be connected.

Now, we see that done automatically. Most of our devices connect as soon as they are turned on. There is no reason to disconnect them like in the past (people had to free up the phone line).

What the Metaverse will make the Internet spatial. This is going to be all around us. It will transform from a flat surface. At present, the Internet is still separate from us.

The Metaverse is going to allow us to be "in the Internet". Eventually, everything will be connected. With the cost of chips continuing to head down, more devices are becoming "smart". This will keep growing as time passes. Within the next 5 years, we will see clothing connected.

Under this realm, physical space, distance, and objects will be removed.

Hopefully we can see how this is a world that we are not even close to achieving. The Metaverse is a lot more than just virtual reality or 3D access.

We can also see the enormous potential. It is true that this can literally rework all of our social structures.

Evolutionary Change

We know technology is moving faster than ever before. However, it is best to keep in mind that it is all evolutionary. The Internet is in the process of "waking up". By this, I am not referring to some of the ideas out there that if we connect enough nodes together, suddenly they will become conscious. Instead, I am citing how we are going to be immersed in this world. The line between physical and digital is going to keep blurring.

Also, over time, we will see the capabilities grow. The Metaverse is going to be an assortment of technologies. Each will follow its over development curve. Whether we are focusing upon mixed reality, blockchain, cryptocurrency, quantum, or energy, all are progressing forward.

For this reason, everything will be evolutionary. This is common with complex systems. Growth will be organic, even if this is not a biological system. It will take decades for many of the components to be ready for mass adoption (like edge computing).

Our world is going to be filled with data. It will always be available to us, when we need it. Today, the mechanism used for that is the search engine. Here is an example of how far things have to go. Consider how often what we get from a search is not what we are looking for. That is going to be unacceptable in the future.

Another thing to keep in mind is the fact that, since this new world will be spatial, search is not going to be limited to "online" only. We are going to be able to search all of our surroundings too. Today, if you do a search for Cross Pen you get a number of different websites relating to that.

In the Metaverse, a search there will either alert you that it is in the nightstand by your bed or will tell you where you left a virtual version in one of the different "worlds".

Basically, what we are looking at can be viewed as Web 5.0. It will take a bit of time to get there.

The Metaverse is very new so there is so much to learn from it, so many details to learn and to be able to obtain the greatest possible benefit.

It makes me wonder if search engines will evolve. If it does, then would SEO metrics also change? Or will search engines go away and something new will fit given the new metaverse available? I am getting confused thinking about it.

They are going to have to.

As for SEO, it wont be website based like present search. It will be a combination of the physical and digital. Do not ask me how that will be accomplished.

It is also why there is a lot to be done before we can even begin to comprehend that realm.

I have a feeling Facebook might not be too successful with creating digital world, companys like Microsoft are already in this business and might be the backbone at the long run

There is going to be a lot of different entities pushing forward. Hell, Hive is an ecosystem that is developing many different layers. Let us see people start using DLUX on a broader scale.

Great explanation and information on Metaverses and nice to put a name to the technology supporting it as Web 5.0. As with crypto, I think it is clear that Metaverses will eat the world, now it is just a matter of how fast and how soon...

Certainly Web 2.0 ate the world. Social media took over (along with other attributes of that shift).

There is no reason to think the next few iterations of the Internet will not be as revolutionary.

After this metaverse takes over. Its an big benefit for business as now they will charge us from non existential objects which is just coded and has no real life value. Funny thing is people will buy it to show off.
Just like NFT or digital land

What is real life value?

Does Google have real life value?

Actually it has. You know how much effort and investment it required to build a organisation like google.
And you cannot make 1000's of google just like that. Where as in MetaVerse companies will charge you for a land which is unlimited them to create and require negligible investment or may be not.

That is true but what makes Google valuable? Certainly not their physical holdings. Their value is almost exclusively in the digital world. So while you can create 1000s of googles, they will not have value of Google (look at the other search engines).

Same thing with digital land and other virtual assets. While you might be able to keep producing them, they will not have much value unless they are tied to something success. And how much does it take to build a success game or virtual world?

The Metaverse is going to allow us to be "in the Internet".

That is about the simplest description of the Metaverse I've read thus far. I'm definitely going to share your post with folks. Although talking about Web 5.0 just about made my head spin. The world is barely grasping all the Web 3.0 possibilities.

Certainly I agree with you, the world is not grasping Web 3.0 right now. Much of this is embraced in hindsight. Those joining social media did not really know they were involved in Web 2.0. They just logged onto Facebook.

It will be the same here. Most are not going to care, they will just be gaming for tokens.

B20. I think that at the beginning, people's reaction will be "WOW!", but, gradually, everything will return to the material, it will not differ much from the new fashion trends, like the arrival of a loft, which many people are already bored with and people again look at the eternal classics).

I doubt we return to the material.

How many people returned to that for their communication? How many are going back to DVDs for their video?

Is Zoom going to disappear now that the mainstream adopted it?

Not likely.

Something will remain, something will be forgotten, I learned that you can do without Facebook and Skype, absolutely. recently, they still seemed to be something important. Someone refuses voluntarily, someone, under duress, someone grabbed all the blessings of civilization with both hands, and I, in general, want to immerse myself in my garden and apiary, and only, sometimes, tell in my blog, how things are going, but, take a picture of a bird ...), without this, nothing).

Metaverse while very new is very interesting.. there is a lot to learn from as well as benefit from the universe. Creating a digital world will be very fascinating.

Sometimes I hope you're right about this "new world" still being far away, sometimes I kind of wish it was already here...

Looking at all the positive things that can come out of it (I know there will be just as many negatives, they are polar opposites after all), I'm pretty excited. We will be able to do whatever we want. Fly like an eagle or walk about some world as a three headed king kong hanging out with our pet unicorn if we want that. It's pretty cool sounding, I think.

The negatives, well... I think it will go something along the lines of Ready Player One, and Two. It will be the best digital heroin ever known to man... the greatest escape from ourselves!

Awesome post, thanks for the read!!

I hear you. That is a feeling I have also.

There are always positives and negatives to technology.

The Internet is a revolutionary and wonderful thing. Few would dispute that. Of course, hacking and ransomware attacks are certainly a negative.

So we have to keep building around and against that stuff.

That's it though, as the positive side of a technology grows, the negative side grows (not necessarily at the same time) an equal amount.

Security should concern people more I think!

Security should concern people more I think!

Without a doubt. If someone 18 asked me what to do into, I would tell them cyber security. That is going to be huge no matter what comes down the road over the next 30 years.

I think words like web 3.O or metaverse are going to be so overused that they become like how everyone we dislike today is a nazi and is sharing fake news. There will be new words describing our vision. For me, it would be a mix of the movie Ready Player One and the AI Cortana from Halo who does her best to improve both your real and digital life.

They are already overused since the mainstream media jumped on board with them. However, they will drift from focus after the hype breaks down and then emerge when serious advancement and development in that direction takes place.

There is something i am missing. Please correct me.Metaverse is still a vague concept. There will not be 'A' metaverse but 'MANY' metaverses each one made from different companies and everything will be under the umbrella of something bigger.Or not? How are they supposed to communicate between each other?

Living in the internet will sure be one unique change of environment I presume. The metaverse will sure be widely tapped into pretty much soon as it’s awareness has predominantly started to gain ground and momentum in this contemporary world of ours.

Metaverse is a very cool world and owning an asset in that universe is cool. Soon we will be able to have another world outside our real world were we just communicate and spend virtually our wntire day in.
