The Hive ecosystem is a big buzzing beehive. It’s full of features and can feel daunting to the beginner to get started with. The rewards, in earnings, community contribution and access to great content are so very worth it.

We’ll take a look at Hive tags and tribes today. Understanding these two concepts will make sure you get the most out of the hard work you put into you content.

What Are Tribes?

Tribes are different front end social platforms for the Hive ecosystem. These are either generic and almost any topic will be appropriate, or they are topic specific and you should only post about their dedicated topics.

By posting to a specific tribe you’ll make sure that your post is visible to and accessible by the group of readers who might be most interested in reading your post.

As long as your content is of greater quality, this usually leads to your post getting a biggest engagement due to more interested readers will read it. More upvotes, more reblogs, and more people who will learn from your post.

By already having a Hive account, you already by default have access to every tribes website. Just log in using your Hive credentials.

Using Splintertalk.io as an example among many. This is a tribe dedicated specifically to the Hive blockchain game Splinterlands and all topics surrounding it. When you post to this tribe you’ll make sure that your Splinterlands post can be found by the biggest congregation of Splinterlands players and fans. You’ll also be eligible to earn the Splintertalk tribe native token SPT simply by using the appropriate tag.

What Does Tags Do?

By using the appropriate tag in your post, your post will be visible in the tribe corresponding to that tag. Being tagged correctly and being visible to user in that tribe will allow you to be rewarded in the native tribe token.

The first tag in your post's tag list is called the category tag. This is the tags that’s going to be visible next to your post header. It especially good etiquette to make sure that this tag is fitting to the main subject of your post. In the example below, you can see one of my Splinterlands posts and next to the post title, you can see the category tag #splinterlands.

Using The Appropriate Tags

Avoiding Tag Abuse

To make sure that the Hive ecosystem is healthy and is providing original and good quality, Hive is quite heavily moderated by its own users and by specific watcher accounts.

Using tags that are completely unrelated to your topic of choice are called Tag Abuse. Posting content deliberately to inappropriate tribes too, and this clutters up the experience for that tribes users, and will likely result in downvotes on your post.

Tags truly are a win-win game. Using the correct tags will make sure your post does better both in earnings and in visibility, and using completely inappropriate tags will make sure your post gets downvotes and you might have angered a few tribesmen.

Many tribes are generic and open to most forms of quality content, but do try to think twice about the tags you are using.

Tribes And Their Tags

These tribes are listed in no particular order, and without any intentional personal bias. They are usually larger tribes that are quite well-known.

Generic Tags

These tribes are generic and open to most forms of quality content. Use your best judgement, violence and NSFW content are generally not allowed, unless explicitly stated. If you feel that your content might be offensive, do yourself the favor of researching if that content type is allowed and if allowed, make sure you're following the tribes rules for such content.
