I Have Been Deceived

Growing up, the young ones were always fascinated by the presence of distant relatives or those we do not see very often. This is because we know that anytime they come around, they do two main things. First, they get the little kids little gifts, of course, such as sweets. Apart from that, the concept of the usual bread that comes in handy - I honestly do not know who thought our people that when you are going to a place you have not been to in a while, even if they might be angry with you just buy a loaf of bread along. And you’ll see, peace be still.😎

One other thing that may seem insignificant is asking about our well being especially in terms of academics. The only question that comes in this area is Which class are you now? And we were definitely taught well in our elementary classes. The answer is always of the form "I am in class this or that". What comes next is the bowl of contention. Most times and in our native language, the visitor then goes by saying in Yoruba ‘Ah, O ti k’awe tan’ which means “Ah, you are almost done with school’. Can you imagine? To A little one who just left crèche about 3 years ago?

For me, I believed it. So I am going to be done with school soon. This mentality stuck with me like a leech. I heard such comments as above when I was in nursery school. Oh my! I thought academics would not be more than this elementary thing. I was in the penultimate primary class when I and my classmates were told we are going to be prepared for a common entrance exam to secondary school in the next session. I was like, I thought we were done with school. Which one is called the secondary school again let alone one examination? I was confused.🤷‍♀

Okay, that is accepted. I hope there are no more life and enjoyment-threatening exams. Secondary school was different but I adjusted, I had no choice, do I? The same thing those visitors do say has been said numerous times. One even said, Oh, you have finished school already, what remains is to get married. Poor me! I never knew it was a joke. It was also at the end of secondary school that I was hearing again that there was something called university. At first, I thought that must be where people get married.

Just like I once thought that when you get married, babies just appear from nowhere.🤣

Until I was told the series of exams – exams again – I must take to be able to get in. Everything seems to be at a standstill. I was like can’t we just stroll into one as most do to secondary school? Must we write exams? Why do we stress one another on this planet? It is starting to seem like I am from Mars, I know there is not much stress there. At least we have weightlessness.😉

It was during this time that I did a flashback to those times when I was much younger. I thought these uncles and aunts were people that loved me and I was to look up to them. They all told me I was almost done with school. No one even dared to mention exams. No one! Not once! And now this school of a thing has refused to finish o. It dawned on me that I have been deceived all along. 😌

And the worst thing is, I have been saying this too to my younger ones unknowingly. The cycle continues.🚶‍♀

At first, I thought that must be where people get married.

It made me laugh...... !
By the way you were not that wrong. Some people join universities just to find a partner for them 🤤

Those uncles and aunts just want us to have a happy feeling when they tell us that the school is just over. There is a saying in my language like "not giving the sure but talk about sugar."

Exams are the process na. Who talks about the process. Everyone talks about the result.

I hope you now know that kids do not come from nowhere but from them too, you have to go through a process 😉

True. No one talks about the process. And the process is something that could be tiring and quite demanding.

I hope you now know that kids do not come from nowhere but from them too, you have to go through a process 😉

Of course, I now know it ..😂 A rigorous, breath-taking examination.😂

Well I'm still here... waiting for asuu to call off their strike so I can eventually finish the school I thought I had finished since primary and secondary school.....😩😩

This world is really a tiring place, why do we stress too much...they say examination is not a true test of knowledge so why then do we even engage in them any way?

😂😂😂 You're way worse than your uncles and aunties, you know why? Because you've seen their lies ...it should be you who should break this whole chain.

The thing is even if the strike is called off..most still want to go for their graduate studies. So theis school is like infinity 😩

they say examination is not a true test of knowledge so why then do we even engage in them any way?

I don't know what they can't just say we should swear that we know what we have been taught. And that should be it. No rigorous exams..

..it should be you who should break this whole chain.

Bro, I am trying...🙂

Wait... you used to think that babies appeared from nowhere and that people got married in the university?

You must've grown up in Ibadan. That's the only explanation.

Nooo 😂😢🙆

Guy, what do you gain by overdoing the shots of violence. Why this?

I know you know that having that notion is irrespective of where you grew up.

You have really been deceived a lot... How babies are gotten is the most funniest part of your belief 🥲

I'm guessing you're like us that hates exams 😭 no one told us that they will be trying us at every level.

I can still remember how excited I was whenever I was going to school with my lunch box 😂 mum didn't give me hint that I would face judges to pass every class.

Well, we move... We have to face it

That babies thing, eh? When I got to know about it proper in secondary school. I was shocked to how tons of things have to happen in the body and real life to just make one..😂🙆

Nobody told us we would be tested. I believe everyone must have thought school was easy relative to the little exams we did in those kindergaten classes. Funny we..😅

just buy a loaf of bread along. And you’ll see, peace be still.😎

I can relate, I already ready it out in my head before reading it here, and it made me laugh because it happens everywhere in our dear motherland

“Ah, you are almost done with school’.

And as for this it happened to me too oo, I just thank God I had an elder brother before me, if not, I for don loose gard.

Bread should then be included as part of our national identity then.😂

The thing is most just grow up knowing this school thingy is not ending soon and we just fall into place.

Buying a bread along while going to a place is a custom I don't think will fade off anyday.
I travelled home last week and I bought bread🤣

Only heaven knows who started that custom. And that bread is now an integral item everyone must buy. Your visit is not complete without it. Who knows maybe that is why it is getting costlier by the day.

The cycle will always continue. 😂. I can't remember how many times I've said that too. We all passed through the phase. La vie continues.
