Sealed With A Loving Kiss

Hello Hello Silverites and awesome people of the Hive

24 hour television, a multitude of channels and choices, oh yes make no mistake, kids have it easy today!

Growing up I can remember the three channels that we had on television. The television had no remote control.
We were the remote control🤣

"Edward, change the channel"
"Aww mum, I did it last time, it's not my turn!"

Then of course, you had the televisions with the flipping internal antennae that you had to try and manoeuvre to get a signal.

source Image by OpenClipart-Vectors from Pixabay

Do you remember that, or did you have something similar?
The Test Card!
In the UK, before the station went off air for the night, they would play The National Anthem ~ God Save The Queen, and then pop up the test card until the station came back on air in the morning.
Going off air would often be accompanied by a high pitched whining noise, which you might wake up to, knowing you had fallen asleep with the television on!

I'll tell you what though, with the Television situation of my youth I did read my fair share of books! Something that I think has been lost over the years.

As for smartphones, well our "voice chat" was a rotary dial phone on the hall desk, and you memorised phone numbers!
"Edward, get off the phone I am expecting a call!"
"But mum, I am talking to Jennifer, we haven't talked since last period at school!"
"NOW Edward! Or I will get your Father!"
"Yessss mother."

Talking about school and girls, I wonder if kids of today did what we used to do.
Love Notes and Letters
We didn't have lockers at school, but we did have our own school desk in a dedicated class room. These were not locked and were open to everyone.

source Image by Please support me! Thank you! from Pixabay

On a Monday sometimes you would open up your desk lid and find a perfume covered envelope usually with SWALK written on the back of it. Sealed With A Loving Kiss. Before even opening it, you would be trying to guess who it was from, oh please don't let it be from Ruby the redhead or Belinda the Blonde. I was a sucker for dark hair and would be hoping it was so and so.
Once a charming rascal, always a charming rascal😎
Aye those were fun times.

Letters have been replaced by emails, and then we have computers. People have been talking about floppy discs well who remembers punch cards? At school I remember the first computer we used we had to input data on a punch card!

Music has always been a part of my life, and I cannot forget listening to the charts on a Sunday night and taping the songs onto cassettes. When I was a kid, I had never heard of Copywright let alone what it meant.

I did though join Britannia music and would get sent cassettes of the latest music, of course I had to scounge money to pay for this. I remember going to the Post Office, to get a Postal Order as the method for paying. Then sending my receipt and postal order away!

This trip down memory lane has been my out-of-competition post for the Silver Bloggers community #BOM, which this month is about Things, or memories, from (y)our youth that today's youth will not understand or have seen.

Remember you have until today Tuesday 19th of July at midnight UTC. You can check instructions and prizes at Blog of the Month - New theme for Tuesday 19 July.

Thank you very much for reading and get writing people!

I hope that you enjoyed this trip down memory lane and have yourself a fantastic week!

Remeber that you are awesome!
Make sure to Tell Yourself that today

I still got a chance to use the black and white TV with the antenna and yeah remote control are not available those day's, you really have to change the channel manually 😅. However in our home we don't have the dialed phone and I can only saw it in the post office 😂.

This trip down the memory lane has been fun to read, Tito Ed.

We were the remote control🤣

The good old days. I share some of these memories also. I grew up to meet the Television you spoke about. Although by then only few houses had it as it has been replaced by a more modern television as at then. I remember having to wait till 4pm to watch a tv program. Once it is 4pm the TV comes on with rainbow colours then followed by the national anthem and a cartoon before the programs of the day starts and once it is 10pm, it is done for the day. Good a thing we didn't have that long with us as cables were quickly invented 😄😄.

I don't have any memories of the telephone but letter writing was still very around during my time even though there were phones then. I got a few letters in high school and the feeling of getting a letter is unexplainable 😄😄. I miss the days of letter writing.

Letters are awesome, and something I miss, so I agree the feeling of getting a personal letter is unexplainable!
So you remember the 4pm and 10pm service, and the rainbow colours now that sounds cool.

I hope you have been keeping yourself cool over there!
Time off was great, but I think I will be out of the top ten engagers next week hehe

Wow, your youth age sounds like so much fun, even when you had few of the things you had now, then.

You are indeed a charming Rascal partner, I can imagine all the girls running after you then, hehehe.

I did enjoy the trip down memory lane. Very much! Lol!

For some reason your mention of music made me think I'm meant to be writing a #ttt post. Hehehe!
But, I'm sleepy, so another week will have to pass me by. I'll get organised and write it at the weekend when there's more time.

Also, another memory POPped into my head as I was traversing the lane. Top of the Pops! It was an absolute must every Thursday night. My brother's girlfriend worked for the BBC and gave me two tickets to go with my best friend. It was Wham's last ever show and so they played not one but two of their hits.

However, the one thing I couldn't relate to was the love notes hidden inside my desk. I guess it might have had something to do with going to an all-girls school.

jaja yes TOTP Top of the Pops, now that was the trail blazer!
Actually on YouTube when I am researching songs for ttt I often see Top Of The Pops videos especially for some of songs of our generation:)
I didn't do ttt this week either. It has been a busy week, so we can only do what we can do!

Wow I was not a Wham fan but getting to see their last show, now that was a double Whammy!
Seeing their last show and being on TOTP!

Thanks for the tip and commenting Julia, wishing you a great rest of the week😁
Oh your tip banner, that is gorgeous Julia!

@tengolotodo The antennas of the televisions, I do remember that well, and how annoying it was when the signal of a channel failed when you wanted to watch a program. LOL!

0

0.000

Oh yes, you had to move them around and hope to get a picture and then a clear picture.
Those were the days 😂

0

Oh yes, I remember television in the days of flip switches and UHF, too; I vividly remember having to be home at a certain time to be sure we didn't miss the show opening, not to mention vaulting over furniture to get back before the commercial break ended. Oh yes, good times. Those really are good memories.

Imagine the furor if Stranger Things were broadcast only once per week!

Speaking of, do you remember when Netflix used to be a DVD-by-mail company? It's true!

0
0

avatar

Oh gosh yes, before VCRs, that is right you had to be home to watch it. Then heaven forbid there were two shows on at the same time that people wanted to watch🤣🤣🤣
That was almost like WWIII breaking out!
I never knew Netflix was a DVD by mail company, it was quite slow to catch on in the UK. I do remember we had companies that we did rent movies by mail with DVDs.
Changed days somewhat!

It was the end of an incredible era. We jumped ropes, played hide and seek, and listened to music on old cassette players. Now, they sit on the benches and say Brawl Stars or Roblox. Do today's kids even watch TV or just play on their phones?
Love letters are replaced by comments, and most teenagers look like adults, from make-up, surgeries and so on.

Oh yes Hide and Seek, used to play that often, great fun:)
You are so correct, the end of an era!

Do today's kids even watch TV or just play on their phones?

What a good point, I am sure they just watch on their phones, TV screens will obsolete when we are all gone I think!
Many thanks for commenting and have a wonderful Wednesday:)

TV arrived on our shores a lot later compared to UK, reading books was outlet for adventure when not actually going out seeking adventure in exploring local hills.

Using public swimming pools that were in excellent condition back then, living inland we did not have beaches, relied on catching trains to go fishing in rivers, very different back then.

Enjoyed reading you rendition of growing up, many similarities locked up in here !LOLZ

Using public swimming pools that were in excellent condition back then, living inland we did not have beaches, relied on catching trains to go fishing in rivers, very different back then.

Reading between the lines, the swimming pools now are not in excellent condition. What I have noticed is that there are alot less swimming pools now, the ones we do have tend to be leisure pools! Not much use when you are an adult trying to actually swim.

We always fished in the sea, and always living close to the coast, it was never a problem.

Yes I think many of us had the same things growing up, no matter what country we were brought up in:)

Putting it kindly I would not swim in public pools today, living on the coast 40 years now, of late don't go in E.Coli rich rivers, very seldom the sea which we did regularly.

Paddling/leisure pools are useless, private gym pool last used about 20 years ago not the same as when young outdoors in the sun. Public pools 1960/70's were spotlessly with attending lifeguard, times have changed, will hang onto sweet memories.

After war years I think similar was offered, times have changed!

Hello hello, Super Ed!!! it's my catching up day in Hive

Haha, I had forgotten about having to maneuver the antenna to get the channel's signal. Here too, before they stopped broadcasting and at the beginning, they played the national hymn. It was frustrating not to feel sleepy and want to continue watching TV when the hymn started playing 😂

Haha and the charming wee rascal Ed sure got lots of SWALK, good thing you lived through that era because text messages don't have perfume, and no guessing 🤣

I never used computers with punch cards hehe, so you're older than me😜

And I also used to record on a cassette tape the hit lists that were played on the radio, LOL

Those were happy days 😄

Have an awesome day, Super Ed!!!

Ahhh, those memories. I do remember our first coloured TV, what a thrill. 🙂
We had one channel at first, than two, so not much of switching between the channels. My father kept spare parts of the old telly long after it was gone. 😄
And the phones, oh my, another thrill to replace the dial phone with another with buttons.

I don't know, but this easy life nowdays, makes us rather lazy.
