The unknown, which we must all encounter at some point in our lives, is symbolised by the metaphor of the abyss. Normally, we are afraid of what is beyond, but what if it's only a void?
The abyss looks back when you gaze into it. It is a phrase from the renowned book and movie The Abyss and it means that if you gaze at anything long enough, it will eventually stare back at you.

This phrase refers to the risks associated with in-depth contemplation and reflection. When we are so preoccupied with our thoughts that we fail to see the outside environment, we are more vulnerable to mental illness.
It may also be used to denote a highly charged circumstance.
