I live in Vienna, and just today I posted about the Prater amusement park. What I didn't mention in that post is that the park area surrounding is mostly horse chestnuts, which is also found in many of our parks and streets. I remember as a kid I used to collect them - when they are ripe, they pop open, and in a stand of trees one can get beaned quite good, they come down like hail. We also made crafts out of them, like your little chestnut man. But also string them for chains. They are supposed to be poisonous, but who would eat them anyway, they are awfully bitter tasting.
