My first silver coin has arrived: János Pilinszky 10000 Forint Collector Coin

My first Silver coin has arrived today!

I could not be more excited than when I received the message from the postal company that my package was delivered today. I wrote about my decision to start buying silver coins just 8 days ago I wrote about my newbie's journey and today the first purchase has arrived home. I can't wait to share it with the community!

The right moment

I had searched online several times before to look for places that sell silver coins. Unfortunately, until recently this search was not successful and I gave up at some point. Add to that the lack of funds at the time and I just didn't try anymore for a long time. This didn't mean I lost my interest, on the contrary, I've always known that at some point, I'd start collecting silver coins. I just needed to wait until the right moment and apparently, this was last week.

Now I know my way around the internet using the Hungarian to English translations a bit better, and suddenly it seems that there are plenty more websites that translate automatically, I was more successful getting some hits that even looked appealing to look further into. Eventually, I landed at a marketplace website that I've used once before here for another purchase and I was lucky to find a few options that I considered buying.

I hoped to find my first purchase there as that would mean I'd receive it not long after purchase which I preferred over waiting for a long time buying it from overseas.

How I selected the silver coin

As I don't know anything about the silver stacking lifestyle and (besides some tips I received here, thanks to everyone!), I decided that this first purchase should be one that I liked and I didn't want to overpay from the value of the coin has made the first purchase a stupid decision to look back at later. So when browsing through the listings, I checked out their value and difference in price, this needed to be within a reasonable amount and not a large difference because there's no way that I could decide this was a good price or not with no experience yet.

My eyes were drawn to a coin with the tree of life, so it seems. And while browsing further to other options, I didn't want to get into auctions because these all took too long to my liking, and therefore I made a selection of the coins available for direct purchase. Eventually, this was the coin that I kept looking at and I decided to buy it.

János Pilinszky Collector Coin

The coin I bought is minted here in Hungary and is the János Pilinszky 10000 Forint Collectors coin.
I wasn't drawn to the coin because of dear János Pilinszky, but to tree on the other side, but of course, that doesn't mean that I don't want to know more about this coin and the story behind it. Let's have a look at who Janos was.

The coin was issued by the Magyar Nemzeti bank to honour the 100th anniversary of the birth of János Pilinszky. The collector coins were designed by sculptor Balázs Pelcz. Source.

What I was mostly interested in, is why there's a tree on the front of the coin and is this supposed to represent the tree of life as I would expect it to be? Let's see what the answer is to those questions.

To honour the 100th anniversary of the birth of János Pilinszky, the Magyar Nemzeti Bank is issuing a silver collector coin with a face value of 10,000 forints and its non-ferrous metal version of 2,000 forints today.

On the obverse, the representation of a naked tree is seen on a grassland worn by the wind with the rising sun in the background, which resembles an enlarged iris and pupil of a wide-open eye. The design was inspired by the highlighted motif in János Pilinszky’s poem titled Apokrif. In addition, the compulsory design elements of collector coins are featured on the obverse: on the edge, in an upper circular legend the inscription ‘MAGYARORSZÁG’ (Hungary), next to it, separated by a dot the denominations ‘10,000’, and ‘2,000’ and the lettering ‘FORINT’, on the left the mintmark ‘BP.’, and on the right the mint year ‘2021’.

On the reverse, the portrait of János Pilinszky is seen from a side view, displaying the poet leaning against a tree deep in thoughts, exhibiting a melancholic demeanour. The representation was inspired by the emblematic photo taken by András Szebeni. On the right of the coin, Pilinszky’s signature is placed, below the years ‘1921-1981’ referring to the birth and the death of the poet. The master mark of coin designer, sculptor Balázs Pelcz is inserted in the lapel of the coat.

It seems that this is not particularly meant to represent the tree of life, but is referring to his poem titled Apokrif. Good to know! So far for the history of this coin.

Unpacking the coin

The coin came in a solid envelope and seemed to be packed tightly.

In the envelope, there was a small package with the coin and a brochure.

Inside the small package there was a small certificate and of course, the coin.

The János Pilinszky silver commemorative coin was issued by the Magyar Nemzeti Bank on 26 November 2021.
