Plagiarism on Listnerds - Piggybacking on other people's content

This is not going to be pretty

Remember my rant about downvotes? Well this is one of the same category, only this time I'm really fuming and fed up seeing this behavior. This person is not worth it to format this post one bit, so I will refrain from spending my time no that. As I honestly have much more important things to do today. It has already taken up too much of my time by the time I'm writing this. So here we go. I will just say what I have to say so it's out there for everyone to read. I hope @hivewatchers will see this too, as I read in his post they have detected his plagiarism already. It didn't end on Hive, he also needed to milk the Listnerds system. Usually, I just report these things and hope it will solve itself, but as this clearly didn't happen, I will just be the bad cop and spit out the frustrations in public.

I have seen it for weeks now, you and a few others have been solely copy and pasting random articles from Hive or the internet and using parts of their content to write the email on Listnerds. Thinking that you will keep finding rewards day in and day out. How's that been going so far @meheryab ? Let's check the Listnerds richlist:

image.png

Honestly, seeing that you were able to earn 184 Listnerds = 368 Hive just by copy pasting (read: PLAGIARIZING) is unacceptable. I have not seen 1 email from you that was original content. My radar went off right away and I was right.

You plagiarized my Hive blog at least once more

I may have missed a few here and there, but from at least one other time I remember reporting you for it. I don't remember which one it was, but more people brought it to my attention and I have reported it to the team back then as well. Today my mind was baffled to see another email with directly copied text from my post.

Your SOLO email, that will get paid out the next day even if you don't get 20 upvotes:

image.png

image.png

And although I recognize my writing immediately myself, here's a screenshot and link to the original content:

image.pngSource

Not much to argue about here, is there? This is my content, simple as that!

Now you are playing the victim card?

This time it was different compared to the last time you did this to me. Back then you only had 2 year old posts so commenting would probably not even be noticed. This time, you have been publishing (other people's) content. So I decided to go to your last post and leave a comment.

image.png

To visit this wonderful piece of content click here

Well, if you have been paying attention to what this guy shares on Listnerds, you have noticed already that he shares even university level content, which immediately shows readers that this is probably not legit. Consistency is not something he's familiar with, besides the plagiarizing that is, of course. So I'll give him that!

I work fulltime dude!

Fulltime, I'm working on the Hive related stuff I earn my income with, writing content, sharing it on social media, designing things to make that stuff look pretty and ENGAGING with others. I don't get NOTHING for free you know? People that know me from my previous account, know very well how much time I was already spending on Steemit at the time, it has mostly been a fulltime thing for me, with the difference that in the past months it's actually starting to pay off that I made all these connections over the years. Your reputations isn't something you can buy, well you can if you have the stake to do so, but when you are being marked as "plagiarizer" enjoy getting rid of that label!

Once on my bad side, you will remain there

I don't care anymore if you will not touch any of my content again to plagiarize, to me, you have shown that you're not worth my time to even check if you changed your ways. This has nothing to do with you being new as I connect with new people all the time. Your ethics are the issue and those rarely change. You showed your true colors to those that noticed and messed up your first impression. Why would we spend another minute on seeing if you are now behaving while we already have so little time to get our own work done? Why would we? There's no benefit for us in there, it only brings negative vibes, and I don't need that.

Thou shall not steal. That's it basically. If you remember that, maybe you can make a great first impression on other people that don't have a history with you yet.

As for Listnerds

This dude earned 368 Hive worth of Listnerds, is there something you can do to stop this kind of behavior in the future? Because he's stealing from the reward pool, I never ever spent time to mingle in that kind of stuff on Hive as I feel my vote is worthless anyway, but with the followers I gained thanks to Listnerds, I feel I may have a shot here to make sure that it's being worked on somehow. It's not an incident, I can safely say that NONE of this person's emails were his own wordings. And yet he earned a monthly salary probably for where he's living just by stealing. This is not what we're promoting Listnerds for, is it?

This was the end of my name and shame rant, I surely hope I won't be needing to do this ever again. I much rather read good content and get inspired by reading it and then decide to share it on Listnerds so that YOU will get more engagement. This is how I want to spend my time, not by dwelling in the negative. This took enough of my time today, continuing with some positive stuff now.

I suppose it's a sad, sad truth that wherever there is a game to play, someone will try to game it. Hopefully the community will be able to find a way to put this to an end.

You're right about that, it's not a surprise it happens, but I have developed a zero tolerance for this behavior :)

I hope so too! At least then my rant would be worth it. I really hate spending 1,5 hours on negative stuff like that because in the end that's what it took from me in total. Reporting it etc. I rather find great content to share and focus on paying it forward rewarding good efforts. :)

Sorry you have to go through this.

I can’t bring myself to understand how some people are against downvotes, how will we counter such actions on here without downvotes.

What the person doesn’t know is that they could create original content in their capacity and still earn.

Try to not let this get the happy part of you especially today. Sorry again

I wish it was just me in this case, but I've seen him doing it to so many others every day over and over again. Apparently reporting it only didn't make him think twice, why would he, he earned 368 Hive doing so.

This needs to be addressed, and now I shall continue focusing on the positive things on Listnerds because these 1% of the users are not going to get the other 99% down :)

What the person doesn’t know is that they could create original content in their capacity and still earn.

Exactly what I've been preaching. Every single person on the planet can find some thing they are good at, have a lot of knowledge about, a hobby, some professional thing, speaking about their life experiences etc, You name it. There's always something. You have to make an effort to explore it, yes, but every one that developed a following on Hive has done so. We don't get nothing for free, do we?

It's hard work, consistency and when I don't show up for a week due to real life, I earn nothing, but I sure won't start plagiarizing.

Thanks for your comment, it's appreciated!

One of tens of thousands of similar fraudsters who have been caught since 2016.
They steal the content of others for various reasons: to monetize, to gain social currency (social status, attention, fame, etc).
Such content theft, lying and dishonesty is incentivised and enabled on all social media. There are no consequences for such actions, so they come to Hive with the same attitude.

Yeah, I can't even deal with these stupid answers they give if only one time, I salute you for dealing with this constantly :)
I really want to crawl through the display and shout that you can always find something original to add value to the platform. No matter who you are or what you do. But yeah, it takes time and more effort than copy pasting..

(Edited)

A very measured and fair response... a leopard rarely changes its spots. Yet after nearly 6 years on steem/hive combined I have seen that what a leopard does do is make up half arsed excuses and then create multiple new accounts to try and repeat the same thievery on the blockchain.

I honestly spoke to someone I knew from my creative writing degree (who works for a major publishing house) about steem in 2018 and the possibility of somehow merging traditional publishing with blockchain tech in regards to authors gaining a foothold (and some earnings) through short story writing based on established worlds or sub creations that they had already set published novels in.

Her words to me after reviewing steemit at the time was that it was a legal nightmare due to how easy it is/was for plagiarism to happen.

I think @hivewatchers do a fantastic job curbing this type of intellectual thievery, but it wasn't enough for my friend to join me in making the pitch I had written to her bosses.

I think with listnerds the simple (I'm not sure how simple this would be cause I'm not a coder) solution would be to make it mandatory for people to link their hive account when signing up, then when they create an email it could check if they were taking portions of their original blog post and modifying/rewriting them to make a summary, something which I personally think is acceptable. In this example if say meheryab logged in to listnerds then had to log in with their hive account to access the features, when they copied some content from someone else’s blog it would flag up in purple (or another colour) and simply not allow them to include it in the body of the text, also maybe with a pop up warning saying "you are stealing someone elses work from their blog, don't do this or you risk being reported to @hivewatchers". Something similar would have to be implemented for images as well... and I honestly don't know how easy, or even possible, this would be.

@thisismylife kindly told me that @blainjones is the main developer for listnerds. I was wondering if you could have a look at my suggestions and see if they are even possible. I know it would probably mean a lot of coding work but feel it might be worth it in the long run as listnerds is an easy target for plagiarists.

Much respect for what you do!

I agree that this is something so built into their nature that I've rarely see anyone even trying to change. Usually it's empty words so that they have no eyes on their account. But if you check the first posts, from 2 years ago, it was already the same thing.

I'm glad Hivewatchers took note of his account. Even though we both know he will use another one if he wants.

I'm not a coder either, so I can't tell. I do know that the biggest group of members is NOT from Hive so even though they want to bring the two worlds together, I think this would not be an option (for now). But I may be wrong.

Blain is very bus man but I'm sure he will have a look once he finds some time.
Thanks for thinking along! I'm so glad you went onboard on the Listnerds train :)

I was always a bit dubious about his posts/mails since i became more active on listnerds/hive, but it's now blatantly clear since he used your post to use as content for one of his mails that he has absolutely no integrity whatsoever, and I for one won't be bothering to even open anything more from him (unfortunately I dont yet get enough votes to actively downvote him). I'm guessing he must be upgraded as he seems to post a minimum of 3 mails a day.

His claim to be new is no excuse either - I'm new (at least since Listnerds went on the blockchain) and have managed quite easily to post my own original thoughts/passions, so it's just laziness on his part.

Hopefully something will happen that will help to prevent this type of despicable action in the future.

Call it gut feeling! I have learned that I can trust mine very well. Even if I don't see proof yet.

That's no excuse, as you said so many new people, we all walked in the newbie shoes. Besides his first posts are from two years ago. So no, that won't work for me that excuse. Laziness and ethics.

I hope so too, for now downvoting and reporting when it happens is all I can do.

That goes vice versa for the person (me) who's content was stolen as I got a bunch of them immediately after his comment that he was so sorry he will do better yadieya bullshit.. Annoying people.. just do better, learn from it. But no, let's punish someone sharing actual valuable content that helps people.

Sigh

Lesson Number 1 - Don't piss off @thisismylife, she's kicking ass and taking names. Seriously though, good post. You know how I feel about plagiarism. I am not sure what can be done but I agree he is stealing from us as he is taking money from the pool.

Lol, if you go though my posts, I don't think I've ever named and shamed anyone. I would just keep the words vague so that this person knows, but others don't. So yeah he pissed me off, I really don't think even in my Steemit days I ever did this. But something had to be said, I think many would not even notice otherwise. Last time when he picked my post to share there were nice comments, peopled didn't even realize he just copied part of my content in the email and added nothing. I have zero tolerance for this kind, but it takes a lot for me to openly spit my frustration like this.

It will probably not help either, seeing his comment on his post to mine, and then also seeing all these downvotes at the same time. I didn't send that email out to earn rewards I wanted people to see what he was up to. Now they know.

There will always be people out there who want to "beat" the system. And when it is suspected, I don't know whose post came first. I am sorry it happened to you. The only way I can think of to fight back is to publicize the persons' id. That way we all know to vote them down and not reward them for plagerizing.

I'm honestly normally not the person to name and shame AT ALL. But in this case, as I saw nothing else but him plagiarizing, I just had to. I already knew his comment on his post where I replied would be the same shit, different plagiarizer comment. There will always be those trying to beat the system yes, I stayed quiet for weeks, hoping he'd silently disappear and get tired, but unfortunately for him, he picked another blog of mine to piggyback on.

There's a difference with you sharing my blog, like hey look at this bla bla adding your own words as intro. But he never does that. It's only copy paste, and I feel it should be called out.

I am trying to follow along.

Is this person emailing out your content or does he copy/paste your content as his on Hive and then email it out?

In the two times I caught him, he is copy pasting my content from Hive as if it's his own email, linked to my post. But I have caught him doing nothing else with other random content from the internet. He adds 0 of his own words. It's all copy pasting others. And if you look at his profile, all the content that he has published there is the same story.

So he is sending out your posts in his emails? Is that correct?

No if he was just sending out other people's content adding his own intro in the mail, even if it was just a sentence would be cool, the fact that he only copy pastes full paragraphs from others in his emails and adds nothing of his own and earns with that is the problem.

And not only my content, but this is also the only thing he has been doing.

And if you check his profile, it has also been the only thing he's been doing on hive (until his last 2 maybe) that's why hivewatchers also downvoted him.

Ps why do I have the feeling here as if I'm doing something wrong.. I mean I guess you have noticed my content, I'm all about lifting people up when they add value.. But the other side is that I don't like people piggybacking on other people's work.

I just read he's also been plagiarising in the ecotrain community.

Lol, that's the thing with text :)
To avoid me misunderstanding it, I thought I should just mention it to clarify. So now you did, thank you!

I really feel this thing took too many hours of my day, so I will now start doing what intended to do, write a positive blog for today.

And there's nothing wrong with asking questions, but the whole thing has been annoying to me so as you confirmed, I'm a bit on edge today. My apologies for that.

Ouch, once can be a mistake, twice is simply said ... NOT DONE!

Looking at this from the bright side, your contest really is acknowledged as brilliant! If even such a not too intelligent lazy person starts to copy it, you know you have done something right.

Too bad that they don't give you the credits you deserve for this!

Yeah, I honestly don't really look at this as a positive thing anymore, the guy pulls random shit from the net as well. LOL

I just wish they'd sincerely feel bad and change their ways because still plenty of people out there that they can impress. I won't bother to read anything anymore, but I'm not the only person out here. But I read his so-called apology and then a bunch of downvotes PLUS also telling me not to refer to him negatively, while he should have not plagiarized.. the world upside down.

Gonna put on some happy music now and write something nice :)

I just wish I could give you an actual hug. The feeling of violation that comes on when you take in the fact that someone is stealing your hard work(and profiting from it) is just the worst.

I have a hard time even sharing other people's content on Listnerds, even with (and always) proper attribution, because I feel sorta weird getting paid in tokens from highlighting their work, but I also love them getting the recognition that it brings them, so I am very careful how I go about doing such a thing. Attribution and recognition for one's creations is important, and if you have ever gone through any type of schooling, plagiarism is wrong is always taught, so there's really no excuse for it.

That said, I hope this post was therapeutic. You are such an amazing person and creator of incredibly awesome content! I always look forward to one of your posts or Listnerd emails because you can totally see just how much work you put into your work.

Thank you for that dear @generikat!

I know we are on the same page, that's been clear from the moment we connected. This person defo seems to be having a)more accounts or b)a few friends which I already connected a few weeks ago as I now have 3 & 4 downvotes on my last 2 posts suddenly.

One is this, the other was an actual helpful guide for people to embed their images as this is going wrong quite some times. I thought I should just throw that guide out there again, a true shit post to downvote, indeed. But yet they feel entitled that their shit posts get verified. It's annoying.

Fake excuses on my comment below his post where I called him out, because soon after, downvotes were there as if I can't add 1 + 1 knowing it came from that corner.

In the long run, those adding value will win, he won't be there!

Sucks that you are going through this. But I wanted to eco a few things that people have stated...This is why downvotes exist and should be used. I rarely, if ever use downvotes but when I did, it was for situations like this.

I'll make sure to use my votes better to protect ListNerds and hopefully others do as well.

Yes, I agree, this is when they should be used. Sucks that they instantly retaliate on my guide on how to embed your images on Listnerds, while they probably also use that as a reference themselves. Like instead of changing your ways, just start downvoting the person that tries to help everyone where she can.

I have discussed it with my team as well, and we will do the same. Thanks for that, in the end, it will make Lisnterds better because I'm not going anywhere, will just continue what I've been doing. I never created a post like this that I can remember of at least, he really really got to me doing this, haha.

I hope I never feel like doing it again though :)

Hey look at it this way...You are doing something right if you have people copying what you are doing.

It sucks, and it's low effort but it's also part of the crazy world we live in. We will do our best to curb it for ListNerds and will encourage more people to use that downvote button in the system.

Heck they do it enough on my messages LOLOLOL
