Free healthcare in Brazil // A saúde gratuita no Brasil

Living in Brazil has many advantages and disadvantages, Brazilians tend to complain about the misfortune that is their policy (and who doesn't?), little is positive based on any political decision, whether present or past, but among everything that has happened in country, one of the most assertive and positive things is definitely the SUS. I myself have been a critic of the SUS, when you "open your eyes" to politics you end up seeing defects and problems and both models, whether right or left, and I had a criticism about the cost of maintaining a free health system for For such a large country, of course this is expensive and complicated, but of all that Brazil has in political terms and based on democratic and progressive models, SUS is an absurd victory.

I will report a basic experience as an example of how this is something positive for Brazilians, even at simple levels and through the filter of "white and lower middle class" people, who are not the main mass user of the SUS in the rest of the country, and that's exactly where the great shine is, the SUS does not exclude anyone, if the richest man in Brazil arrives at the Emergency Room with a kidney crisis or cardiac arrest, he will be treated for free, just like the poorest man who can be sitting there your side waiting your turn.

Recently my girlfriend needed a series of blood tests, and when researching prices we saw that it would cost on average 500 reais (equivalent to 105 usd, which for us is a LOT of money), and that would be unfeasible. I remembered that we could try to request the exams through the SUS, which in general does not deny it (unless they were rare and very expensive exams). We went with face and courage and managed to schedule the exams. With the stamped sheet, all I had to do was go to the laboratory and schedule the exam. I watched the work of that lady who stamped the sheets and served the public (while I was there, about five people came to schedule an exam) and I wondered if both she and the "users" had this real notion of how great is the benefit of having at a distance between hand and stamp human health being accessible to all, all Brazilians? 500 reais, which is by right ours, my girlfriend's, mine, hers, everyone who pays taxes.

A few days later, we had to go to the Emergency Room because she was having a very strong panic attack. We got there and she was quickly attended by the nurse who registered the problem and I sent her to the doctor. In about fifteen minutes the doctor (who sees maybe 80 people a day, they work night shifts, and of course, they are often tired and exhausted) attended to us and quickly referred us to the infirmary where my girlfriend was medicated with intravenous medication, all this at no cost and with caring people taking care of her. All this only strengthened my admiration for the concept of "welfare state" applied in our country and made me want to share it with you. It is clear that this system has MANY flaws, many and infinite cases of problems in the model, and that a lot of people end up suffering from these flaws, but still, my focus today was to talk about the benefits and not the problems. I know that many who will read this do not have this type of coverage in their country, I know, for example, that healthcare is very expensive in the United States, for example, I don't know how it is in European countries and I would love to know more about it from personal experiences, so if feel free to share, please tell me what health is like in your country. Morar no Brasil tem muitas vantagens e desvantagens, o brasileiro costuma reclamar da desgraça que é sua política (e quem não reclama?), pouca coisa é positiva baseada em alguma decisão política seja do presente ou do passado, mas dentre tudo que já aconteceu no país, uma das coisas mais assertivas e positivas definitivamente é o SUS. Eu mesmo já fui um crítico do SUS, quando você "abre os olhos" para a política você acaba observando defeitos e problemas e ambos os modelos, seja direita ou esquerda e eu tinha uma crítica sobre o custo de manter um sistema de saúde gratuito para um país tão grande, é claro que isso é caro e complicado, mas de tudo que o Brasil tem em termos políticos e baseados em modelos democráticos e progressistas, o SUS é uma vitória absurda.

Vou relatar uma experiência básica como exemplo de como isso é algo positivo para os brasileiros, mesmo em níveis simplórios e através do filtro de pessoas "brancas e de classe média baixa", que não são a massa principal usuária do sus no resto do país, e exatamente aí está o grande brilho, o SUS não exclui ninguém, se o homem mais rico do Brasil chegar no Pronto Atendimento com crise de rins ou parada cardíaca, ele será atendido de graça, igual ao homem mais pobre que pode estar ali sentado ao seu lado esperando sua vez.

Recentemente minha namorada precisou fazer uma série de exames de sangue, e ao pesquisar preços vimos que iria custar em média 500 reais, (equivalente a 105 usd, que para nós é MUITO dinheiro), e isso seria inviável. Lembrei que poderíamos tentar pedir os exames pelo SUS, que em geral não nega (a não ser que fossem exames raros e caríssimos). Fomos com cara e coragem e conseguimos marcar os exames. Com a folha carimbada foi só ir no laboratório e agendar o exame. Eu observava o trabalho daquela senhora que carimbava as folhas e atendia o público (enquanto estive ali veio umas cinco pessoas marcar exame) e me questionei se tanto ela quanto os "usuários" tinham essa real noção de quão grande é o benefício de ter na distância entre a mão e o carimbo a saúde humana sendo acessível para todos, todos os brasileiros? 500 reais, que é por direito nosso, de minha namorada, meu, seu, de todos que pagam os impostos.

Alguns dias depois, precisamos ir para o Pronto Atendimento por que ela estava tendo uma crise de pânico muito forte. Chegamos lá e rapidamente ela foi atendida pela enfermeira que cadastrou o problema e encaminho para o médico. Em torno de quinze minutos o médico (que atende talvez umas 80 pessoas por dia, fazem turno noturno, e claro, muitas vezes estão cansados e esgotados) nos atendeu e rapidamente encaminhou para a enfermaria onde minha namorada foi medicada com medicação intra venal, tudo isso sem custo algum e com pessoas atenciosas cuidando dela. Isso tudo só fortaleceu mais minha admiração pelo conceito de "welfare state" aplicado no nosso país e me deixou desejoso de compartilhar com vocês. É claro que esse sistema tem INÚMERAS falhas, muitas mesmo e infinitos casos de problemas no modelo, e que muita gente acaba sofrendo com essas falhas, mas ainda assim, meu foco hoje foi falar dos benefícios e não dos problemas. Sei que muitos que lerão não tem esse tipo de cobertura em seu país, sei por exemplo que a saúde é caríssima nos Estados Unidos por exemplo, não sei como é nos países europeus e adoraria saber mais sobre isso a partir de experiências pessoais, então caso sinta-se à vontade para compartilhar, por favor, conte-me como é a saúde em seu país.
