Quote of the Day - James Clear on wasted time

“The most invisible form of wasted time is doing a good job on an unimportant task.”

James Clear

I will never forget the day I learned the lesson embedded in today's quote of the day.

I had just been hired and, as it normally happens, I was eager to show what I was made of; therefore, I was always looking for opportunities to over-deliver and amaze my boss with my outstanding skills.

My team back then identified the need for a particular kind of report and I volunteered for the task. It was a very simple report and I was definitely overqualified for that particular task, but I thought that would be a good opportunity to shine.

The report was to be done in Excel, and that team was not particularly skilled in that software, but, because in my previous job I was on Excel pretty muhc 24/7, I knew how to do things they didn't even think were possible.

And so I did. I created the most incredible report that they have seen. I took Excel to the limit of its possibilities and was really proud of my work.

When I presented it to my boss, however, her reaction caught me completely off guard. She said the report was very well done and all but she could tell that I spent a lot of time (which I did) building it while a simple table with a couple of charts would have done the job and saved me a lot of time.

That was not an important task, at least not in comparison to the rest of my scope on that role and I learned the hard way how to prioritize tasks and be a lot more efficient.
