Education In Nigeria; A Mess From Top To Bottom

Hello Hivers,

It's another beautiful morning, another opportunity to try again. Today I'd like to express my concern for the decayed educational system in Nigeria.Nigeria's glaring academic deficit has resurfaced as a source of concern.Over the years, a lot of problems has faced the educational sector in Nigeria which includes poor governance, infrastructural decay to mention a few.One of the most prominent is poor funding

Education has shown to be the most effective technique of growing human brain and abilities required to produce wealth and maintain a suitable and democratic system..Education, which I believe is the key to achieving personal goals, economic security, and, in general, the nation's pride and integrity, has been turned into a national embarrassment. The educational system in Nigeria follows the 1_6_3_3_4 formula .One year of pre primary education, six years of primary education, three years of junior secondary education, three years of senior secondary education and a minimum of four years of tertiary education.

Public universities has been on lockdown for the past few weeks simply because the Nigerian government has refused to meet up with the demands of ASSU(Academic Staff Union of Universities) . Personally, I think continuous strike actions may further destroy the nation's educational system.

I'm not sure how effective a strike like this would be. I'm guessing the results will be similar to those of earlier workouts. In 2013, the union went on a six-month strike; in 2014, it went on a one-week strike; in 2017, it went on a 36-day strike; and in 2020, it went on a nine-month strike. The list of strikes goes on and on. Nonetheless, the motivations for the measures remain. The most serious issue confronting Nigeria's educational system is a lack of funding. The annual percentage of the budget dedicated to education is pitiful. Education received only 7.04 percent of the budget in 2018. This is below below the UNESCO-recommended range of 15% to 26%.

I doubt the government will listen to the academics this time, and if it does, it will sign another deal that will not be implemented, leading to another strike by the lecturers. As a result, the strike cycle is likely to continue. The longest strike action in the last few years came in 2020 when ASUU went on a nine-month strike.

We the students are at the receiving end of all these. When students return to school after a long period of strike action, they are known to do poorly in exams. This has nothing to do with the fact that they have fewer contact hours and are less motivated to read and research, both of which have an impact on the quality of their education. Prolonged ASUU strikes force lecturers to rush their academic work. The significance of this is that they tend to overlook important portions of their course work, semesters are shortened, and students are assaulted with a large amount of academic work in a short amount of time. Finally, this "haphazard approach" to literary and scientific studies leads to poor student performance and lowers the general standard of our tertiary education system.

The educational sector is the foundation of every society seeking to tackle the challenges of a rapidly changing world. The Nigerian educational system has been chastised by ASUU strikes, which have continued to jeopardize the future of our young. Quality education is critical to our country's future, and all stakeholders must collaborate to do it properly.
