Preparing Ogbono Soup

Ogbono Soup aka Draw Soup makes eating swallow so easy when going down the throat because of its slimy nature. I for one don't like Okra Soup because of the chunks of Okra seen, that's why I prefer Ogbono Soup even though I add a little okro to it, and I love it Its even my favorite. Here are some health benefits of the soup..

Ogbono with botanical name Irvingia gabonensis, is also known as the Wild African Mango or the Bush Mango. It is a potent superfood with a long history of human use. The seed like fruit is high in healthy fatty acids and antioxidants.

It is popular among the Igbos as Ogbono. The fruit and seeds have been used as both food and medicine in Africa for generations, the seed currently receives the most attention due to its health benefits and its usefulness in cosmetics.

Ogbono Soup serves as weight loss aid.
It helps prevent heart disease.
It assists in regulating blood pressure.
It helps regulate blood sugar.

Okay it's about time for the steps on how to cook.

Things I used for the soup.

. Ogbono seeds
. Ugwu
. Crayfish
. Pepper
. Meat
. Pomo
. Palm oil
. Okro
. Salt
. Maggi

Pre-cooking

. Boil/ cook the meat and all assorted. For the assorted, I recommend using stock fish because it gives it that unique taste.

, Cut the vegetables. You can always ask them to do this for you in the market.

. Grind the ogbono seed.

. Boil like 2 cups of water and set aside.

. Grate the okro.

Cooking.

  1. Pour some palm oil into a clean dry aluminum pot.

  2. Set pot the stove and melt the oil at low heat. Remember, only melt the oil, do not allow it to bleach.

  3. Once melted, turn off the heat and add the already ground Ogbono.

  4. Using your cooking spoon, dissolve the Ogbono in the oil and make sure there are no lumps.

  5. When all the Ogbono has been completely mixed with the oil, add the meat/fish stock (water from cooking the assorted meat and fish). Set the heat of your cooker to low and start stirring. You will notice the Ogbono starts to thicken and draw. Remember not to add all the stock at once.

  6. Keep beating or stirring till the Ogbono has completely absorbed the meat stock.

  7. Add a little quantity of the hot water and beat till the Ogbono has absorbed all the water. Continue with this process till you get a consistency.

  8. Make sure your heat is set to low, cover the pot and start cooking. Once it starts to simmer, stir every occasionally to prevent it from burning.

  9. Add your grated okro then beat the mix well separating every lump but if you are not using okro, just skip this process.

  10. Add the assorted meat, ground crayfish, salt and pepper to taste. The Ogbono should or may have become too thick from the cooking. If that's the case, add a little bit more water and stir very well. Cook till the contents of the pot is well heated up.

  11. If you prefer your Ogbono Soup without vegetables, turn off the heat and serve but if you like to add a vegetable, you can add it now. Stir very well. Leave to stand for about 5 minutes and serve with any swallow. As for me, I used eba yellow garri in particular.
