1 Silver Krona - Gustaf VI Adolf

avatar
(Edited)

Today's silver coin from my collection comes from Sweden. A relatively recent piece, 1 krona minted in 1961.

On the front we have Adolf, not the one we all (?) love to hate but Gustaf VI Adolf, King of Sweden from 29 October 1950 till his death in 1973. Other than his portrait the coin reads

GUSTAF VI ADOLF SVERIGES KONUNG
U Õ

for

Gustaf VI Adolf King of Sweden

The other side is relatively simple too, featuring a crowned coat of arms, the minting year and the king's motto:

PLIKTEN FRAMFÖR ALLT

for

Duty before all

Now that's a good motto!

A low concentration, medium sized silver piece, just 7 g of 0.400 silver:

Total, that's 2.8 g of silver or 2$ with today's spot price.

This is my first swedish silver coin and imo a bit meh, but I am expecting some new additions very soon that I can't wait to get! 😍

More precious coins and shit

It has a lion passant on the coat of arms similar to British coins and medals. A good addition it, anything comes in add value. Now, I'll have to look at my Scandinavian coins, let's see if I find something silvery. :D

Beautiful silver coin style from Sweden. Excellent crown design. I like seeing old kings face, pretty cool piece

Scandinavian silver pieces have old kings but I think silver price isn't mentioned
it has traditionnel design about crown and face

It can get cold in Sweden so Gustaf should being wearing a hat and a Fez wouldn't be enough. I think the Swedes would have came up wit the phrase, "Cold hard cash."

It's too bad it's the Adolf you were thinking of but it makes me wonder if that name carries a stigma due to history.

Might have some left somewhere here at home. Used to collect the older 5kr (worth 0.5$) coin which actually were worth alot more in their silver value but sold it a coupleof years ago

I won't write anything about "non-silver" today ;)

Thanks for sharing Sweden coin.

Do you know, there are only 7 countries with crown called currency? And we are one of those countries and use "koruna" as local currency. But you don't find any silver in our coins.

I have a bunch of these lying around in the attic somewhere. Never thought of these as silver, lol.
