10 Lepta - George I (1882) Copper Coin (+ rising stars giveaway winner!)

(Edited)

I have shared some of my gold pieces.. lots of my silver.. Ok let's share something cheaper today! A coin made of copper!

Btw, sorry for the glare in the pics, the coin is in a protective plastic case and photos came out a bit poopish!

This is a Greek coin, minted in 1882 featuring King George I. It reads "ΓΕΩΡΓΙΟΣ Α ΒΑΣΙΛΕΥΣ ΤΩΝ ΕΛΛΗΝΩΝ" for "GEORGE I KING OF THE GREEKS"
and the minting year (1882) on the front side.

On the other we got a bunch of olive leafs (Greece is popular for it's olive trees) and "ΔΙΩΒΟΛΟΝ 10
ΛΕΠΤΑ" for "DIOBOL (two obols) 10 LEPTA (cents)".

Imo, a really beautiful piece but I may not be objective cause it's from my home country!

The coin weights 9.62 g and is a bit bigger than a euro coin

Despite not being made from silver, I have seen these babies starting from at least 5 euros in Facebook groups. I guess because they are rare and ols, I bet many were melted in the past for other uses. Not bad!

In other news, my rising stars giveaway has come to an end. Once again, most entries were meh but I got some lulz this time. Here's the one that made me laugh the most

The plastic film does get in the way of photography but on the bright side the plastic can give any old coin the luster it doesn't have anymore.

Wow I just got some random knowledge from your post now... Especially what those writing says on the coin, what Greek is popular for (Olive oil).

So those coins worth more than a euro, a euro coin seem bigger though or is it my eyes deceiving me? 😅

Congrats to you @davedickeyyall that was funny 😃

Greek coins and the need to put leaves around it haha. Looks epic. Something to glare at this nibbling bear market

Think I need to look through my old coin collection as this one really looks familiar.
Thanks for sharing and reminding me of it.

This is vintage Greek coin. It's made of copper and that's unusual. But when it was minted, could be they use this material a lot !
