Scarcity is the Mind Killer

One of the most self-limiting behaviors we can ever adopt is a “scarcity mindset”. Abundance is the way a child looks at the world, and as we get older many of us adopt a self-serving and staunch view of the world. We need to adopt an abundance mindset to counter our negative scarcity mindset and view the world as teeming with opportunity we can build upon to enrich ourselves and others.

Scarcity comes from the notion that all resources in life are limited. A “scarcity mindset” makes the afflicted behave impulsively and gives them an excuse to fail. If all the resources I require are limited, shouldn’t I jump on the first opportunity at every juncture? If we adopt this mindset, the limitless world becomes a scrapheap full of bones we need to grasp and exploit before someone else does. This does not make for a happy life or a productive one.

A scarcity mindset is dangerous to our progression and unattractive to others from business partners to prospective partners. Scarcity breeds desperation that leads to anxiety and feelings of defeat. The root cause of scarcity is a lack of confidence that springs from past trauma or self-limiting beliefs that have been created by this event. Scarcity means we are limited to what we believe we can scavenge from the world. We need to change this mindset to one of abundance through healing, confidence building and community building to humanize our community members as companions on our journey of life.

How you can avoid a scarcity mindset

Abundance is the opposite of scarcity. On a surface level, this makes sense. The world itself is full of resources, and the pie is expanding. A person with a scarcity mindset views the world as a pie with slices. The pie slices must be cut to accommodate population increases, and the fear is that a more ambitious or “sneaky” individual will consume a slice before they get a hold of one. This is a problem.

Now that we have defined the problem, we need a solution. How can we flip the script on scarcity and move to abundance? Simply put, we need to plug into our community and become connected with others who are making waves. When we see that others are prospering, it humanizes our community members and puts things into perspective. The scarcity mindset is largely self-imposed and can be deprogrammed.

How we can heal from a scarcity mindset

Isolation can fuel many problems including depression, anxiety and scarcity mindsets. Our minds can dream out scenarios where others we don’t know are taking our opportunities. We need to see how ordinary people create abundance. The pie is not made of stagnant slices- it is ever expanding and we can join with others to better ourselves and our community.

Confidence in our abilities will change a scarcity mindset into an abundance mindset almost overnight. Confidence must be built, and it must be supported by self-efficacy. If we develop skills, we can claim our piece of the expanding pie. We can help others in the community to claim theirs as well, which in effect ends the scarcity mindset. Selfishness has no place in an abundance mindset, and as we help others to achieve we see the true nature of the world’s resources- they are near infinite.

New technologies including blockchain and those involved with space travel and regenerative medicine will expand the pie. But technology isn’t the only thing that will expand the pie. Our relationships with others in our community and our families and friends will be our legacy and those we build with. Humanity is part of the world, and technologies fill needs. Without the love and support of others, we fall back into a scarcity mindset, no matter how technologically advanced we become- and this leads to dystopia. A technological control grid could be the result of an advanced case of scarcity mindset, or a supportive and equitable society could be the result of an abundance mindset on a national or world level.
