My Entry for Qurator's Photo Quest: Insects - A Handful of Monarch Butterfly Caterpillars - Seaview, Lower Puna, Far East Big Island, Hawai'i - June 5, 2022
Warm greetings all! š š
Every few days or so I check my new bed of tropical milkweed, Asclepias curassavica, for monarch butterfly caterpillars, Danaus plexippus, because they tend to completely defoliate my new milkweed plants. I gently collect them and move them to a more robust giant milkweed plant, Calotropis gigantea. There have been a lot of caterpillars lately, so I've been checking a bit more often, as they've already eaten the leaves off a couple plants entirely. I plant the milkweed in part for them, but I need to protect the plants a bit until they develop more, and until there are more of them.
In any case, the caterpillars sure are cute little buggers, and I wanted to share them with y'all!
