Off-Grid Jungle Garden Update: Mini-Updates and Up-Potting - GaiaYoga Gardens, Lower Puna, Far East Big Island, Hawai'i - May 13, 2023
Warm greetings fellow plant-and-garden lovers! πππβ¨π€
Today I wanted to share a few quick updates, and to show you some of the up-potting work that my plant friend Shakira and I did yesterday. I don't always have the time to do one of my larger and more comprehensive plant-and-garden updates, but I can easily find the time to post one like this!
Yessterday in the late afternoon, after I had done a good round of my Hive catch-up and tasks, Shakira (one of the women that has been staying here for a few months) and I agreed to meet up to do plant work in the two nurseries on the property, Ano's and mine.
While I was waiting for Shakira, I took a quick walk through the fenced garden, to see how everything was growing, and what caught my eye. I took a few photos of some of the plants that stood out to me.
This Hawaiian hot pepper plant, that I had planted a few months ago, is beginning to produce its very first fruit! This is exciting, as presently we only have two of these wonderful plants on the property that are producing fruit, so this is now the third!
The plant of cat's whiskers/Java tea - Orthosiphon aristatus that I had planted a short time ago is really taking off, with multiple new flower spikes!
A close up of its lovely flowers.
The largest tree tomato/tamarillo - Solanum betaceum is still flowering its head off, though we haven't seen any fruit yet. The flowers smell absolutely amazing!
The pineapple sage - Salvia elegans that I planted not long ago is spreading out very nicely, and it's beginning to produce many flower spikes. I'm already beginning to be able to harvest some for my medicinal tea blend! Yay!
I'm still working to reestablish a bed of gotu kola - Centella asiatica. This is one of two plants in the fenced garden that is doing quite well, and is beginning to spread!
The round-leaf/beach chasteberry - Vitex rotundifolia is also starting to spread out a bit, and it's producing more and more flowers!
One of the ubiquitous plants here at GaiaYoga is the papaya, which is a staple because they are so very productive. A young chempedak - Artocarpus integer can be seen on the right.
When Shakira appeared, we headed to Ano's nursery first. We decided to up-pot the several pots of chakruna - Psychotria viridis (the DMT source in the Ayahuasca blend) that had been siting in a shady spot in his nursery since I propagated them a few years ago. We up-potted them from gallon to two-gallon pots, added a layer of mulch, and put them back in their shady spot in the nursery.
The chakruna happy in their shady spot, just before up-potting them.
After we finished up-potting the chakruna in Ano's nursery, we moved over to my nursery, to up-pot some of the sapling fruit trees that I had grown from seed. We up-potted several of the white-fruited form of mountain/water apple - Syzygium malaccense, some white sapote - Casimiroa edulis, and one beautiful mamay apple - Mammea americana. I can't tell you how incredibly satisfying it is to grow trees from seed, and to see them grow and develop through time! It's such an absolute joy!
Here's the mountain apple saplings, in the middle of being up-potted
We're almost done!
Here's all the fruit trees once we had finished up-potting them. I gave them a good drink, and we placed them back in the nursery.
I took a few photos this afternoon, as I began to write this post up at the Flow House. Several of the plants that I had planted along the sides of the Flow House trail have been growing very well indeed!
This is a presently unidentified species of Plumeria that I got ahold of recently. These succulent trees prefer dried environments, so I planted it up on the lava, just off the Flow House trail. I can't wait to see how it grows here!
This variegated Cuban oregano - Coleus amboinicus 'Variegatus' is going crazy with growth, spreading out more than a foot in all directions! I'm super happy to see these do so well here!
Here's a few wider views of the Flow House trail, with the various plants I've planted easily visible on the sides of the trail. I've described all these more thoroughly in previous posts, so this is just a visual update. Growth is becoming noticeable everywhere!
Succulent and dryness-loving plants do quite well up on the lava.
The Cuban oreganos adore it up here!
This is a view of the trail going down the lava steps. The Agave is looking so good! I keep slowly adding and tweaking plants here, and it's starting to look quite lovely! I look forward to seeing how everything grows over the next year!
That bring me to the end of this Off-Grid Jungle Garden Update! I hope that you enjoyed it, and found it interesting and inspiring! Until next time! π π π β¨ π€

Yes, from a long distance this plant can be overlooked, but it is really beautiful, these white flowers are amazing! :)

Yep, indeed, but when you see it up close it's absolutely striking! The plant is medicinal too, though I haven't worked with it yet! πππβ¨π€
This has its plus, which means that no one needed the medicinal properties of this plant :)
!CTP
I'm excited to dive into this plant's medicinal uses. I love when plants are medicinal, beautiful, and easy to grow and propagate! π π π β¨ π€
I share your desire, I used to deal mainly with aquarium plants, growing them for sale :)
!CTP
That's wondeful! Oh, cool! I had many aquariums as a kid, so I'm familiar with many of those plants too! π π π β¨ π€
I had too many of them, but not in childhood, but in maturity, as they say, I fulfilled my childhood dream :)
!hiqvote
Haha...I had tanks on all sides of my room at one point growing up! I loved it! π π π β¨ π€
And I had paints, felt-tip pens, plasticine and a bunch of different collectible coins and postage stamps everywhere ... I completely forgot about dogs, cats, hamsters and all kinds of insects :)
!CTP
Those sound fun too! I was always deeply fascinated with life, most specifically plants, but all life really, so that took up much of my focus. π π π β¨ π€
At that time, I collected medicinal herbs, dried them and handed them over to the pharmacy, as a child it was a lot of money and an exciting activity :)
!CTP
Oh wow, that's super cool! That's a great experience as a kid! That's what pharmacies were originally! π π π β¨ π€
Yes, there were a number of plants, elderflower, plantain, coltsfoot, yarrow, which pharmacies were happy to accept, but there were difficulties with drying, because then there were no dryers with air circulation and, sometimes, the entire batch that I dried, could get moldy and had to start all over again :)
!CTP
That's excellent! The only one you mentioned with which I haven't worked yet is coltsfoot. Yes, drying is the part of the process where care must be taken. It's even more challenging here with all the rain and humidity. Thankfully we have a good dehydrator. π π π β¨ π€

Amazing how you keep track of all the plant names and species. LOL! I think it's ideal to have communities such as this during these times. I personally would want a tiny community like this, just not sure if I can deal with the upkeep physically. LOL! I'd love a big garden for the kitties to run around and explore. Thank you for keeping us posted on your jungle garden updates. Great to see many plant varieties grow and thrive where you are.
Happy new week ahead!

Thank you so very much! I've been a plant lover/freak, with a very close and deep connection and relationship with plants, all my life, so I have thousands of botanical names buzzing around in my mind! I agree with you wholeheartedly on that one, yes, communities like this part of how we're going to get through the coming challenges. Upkeep is a good deal of work, as the jungle eats everything in time. We have several kitties living here, and they're quite happy! You're so very welcome Rosyel, absolutely! Yes, we have a great number and diversity of plants which do very well here indeed! Thank you so much again! I deeply appreciate it! πππβ¨π€
