I was excited to travel to my hometown as a kid who could discern things for himself for the first twenty two years ago(I had visited my hometown as a baby but have no vivid memory of the experience!). My uncle's upcoming traditional wedding ceremony was the reason why my family would be travelling to our hometown. This visit would enable me to fulfill one of my wishes at the time, that is, to see my hometown.

I had spent most of my life in an urban area in Lagos and was curious to know how I would adapt to a new and rural environment. My expectations were as high as my curiosity. I had also not attended a traditional wedding ceremony before. My uncle's upcoming wedding ceremony was an opportunity to observe and get acquainted to the customs and rites performed at such ceremonies. I was excited that my uncle was getting married. He would be joining the league of married men!

We embarked on a journey to my hometown after a lot of planning and preparations. Our car almost got hit by another car while in traffic not long after we set out. The offending driver was trying to maneuver his way to be in front of us. Fortunately for us our driver swayed to the side and as a result what would have been an accident. We were annoyed by this incident and confronted the offending driver. He apologised for his error and pleaded with us. We accepted his apology and continued our journey. We were glad that this incident did not escalate beyond our control. I was elated to see different sceneries as we drove on the highway. I got to see many natural geographical features, landscapes and vegetations as we were on transit. Some roads on our route were under construction at the time and as a result I got to see some construction work. I was surprised to learn that some roads pass through hills that to be cut through or demolished to make a path. I never knew such was possible at the time!

We made a stop at a popular local restaurant not far from Okada Town in Edo State to refresh ourselves. We were served starch and banga soup with "bush meat". We also had a cold drink of palm wine too. The meal was delicious and I relished every bit of it. We relaxed for sometime after our meal and later continued with our journey. I saw a lot of mud houses dispersed in different areas as we drove along the highway. I also got to see a lot of farms and plantations too. I was amazed by a particular plantain plantation in Benin that covered a large area of land. I had never seen such a big plantation!

We eventually got to my hometown at night after being held up in a gridlock for hours. I recall being eager to explore my hometown the next day. I did a lot of explorations and had a lot of fun while at it. I was surprised by the level of development in my hometown. Social amenities like schools, hospitals, potable water, markets and roads were functional. It was different from what I had expected. I also got to visit my relatives farms but couldn't accompany them to go hunting. My uncles traditional wedding ceremony took place amid pomp and circumstance.I got to observe proceedings and learnt a lot from the event. The event was a memorable one.

I had a great time in my hometown and cherish the experience I had when I was there.

Thanks for reading,
Have a great day folks.
