I had thoughts about how wealth was created as a juvenile but wondered why some individuals lived in affluence and others did not. This thought got me preoccupied for quite some time and as I reflected about it I wondered why I never engaged my parents in a conversation about it! I always discussed issues that I could not comprehend with my parents for better insight. I guess I wanted to solve this puzzle on my own! It turns out that I got a cue to my answer from an interesting source.

My dad liked watching informative and interesting programmes like news broadcasts and documentaries back then and encouraged me to develop interests in them too. I did not like watching such programmes initially as I preferred entertaining programmes like movies and cartoons. My stance changed over time as I gradually got to appreciate the importance of the programmes my dad encouraged me to watch. The documentaries about animals soon became one of favourite programmes and made me appreciate animals more. They were few terrestrial TV stations in Nigeria at that point in time and as a result a limited number of stations to browse through. The most watched station in my house was NTA. My dad enjoyed their news reports, documentaries and current affairs programmes a lot. We watched one of such documentaries together and it had a positive impact on me afterwards. It helped me cultivate a habit that would become invaluable to me as I grew older.

The documentary was about the former governor of Imo State in Nigeria, Rochas Okorocha who was a successful businessman at the time and was not yet a partisan politician. The documentary portrayed his emergence from a base of humble beginnings to a pinnacle of success. His story was mind boggling and inspiring. The most fascinating part of his story was learning about how Rochas, at the age of nine bought a TV set for his family from the savings he set aside from the income received from his job after school. I was impressed and also challenged by this feat of his! It appeared unreal to me! I began to muse about how I could adopt this kind of saving habit to enable me became a prudent individual although it was not clearly envisaged in my mind like I have stated here. I eventually made a decision to save as much as possible to test if I could achieve the kind of outcome Rochas got!

Cultivating the habit of saving money was more difficult than I had expected. I had to deprive myself of "good stuffs" that I desired. There were several instances when I wanted to indulge myself a little but did not because I wanted to prove to myself that I could do what young Rochas did. Thinking about his achievement made me persist in the midst of challenges although I had several setbacks.

I am glad I cultivated the habit of saving money early as I look back at my journey. I realised it equipped me with good qualities like being patient, frugal and disciplined. I learnt to spend money on reason rather than impulse. I was elated when I took account of my savings from my piggy bank for the first time. I discovered that I had a "substantial" amount of money! I felt gratified that my effort to save turned out to be a worthy commitment. The fact that I had more money to myself motivated me to consolidate on my success! I continued to improve on my saving habit.

The inspiring documentary of Rochas Okorocha's rise to success did not give me a specific instruction on wealth creation but steered me to develop an invaluable skill which is saving money! I have sustained that momentum till this day and never looked back!

Thanks for reading,
Have a great day folks.
