A pleasure to greet you my dear hivers, this time the Valthy team decides to participate in the community of readers by bringing an interesting book which ultimately provides methods and organizational ideas for those who like us tend to be a little disorganized even with more genuine interests and desires.

The book to be presented is entitled The Bullet Journal method which in short is a notebook or notebook that contains formats of agendas, lists, records among other tools to help us be more organized with our obligations and in turn more present in our here and now.

Why did I decide to read this book?

Taking into account the promise of a new year and looking back at previous years where I set out to organize myself but did not get the expected results, I decided to read for the first time a methodology that tells me how a process of order in various aspects of my life should be, so obviously as I turned the pages I realized that I was doing it wrong, since I was only building extremely hard schedules for myself, with a huge list of tasks to do per day and of course being too fanciful by setting goals or projects to accomplish without taking into account what it can cost to create and maintain a new habit.

So this time, instead of repeating the same superwoman pattern I have been repeating for years in my infinite ignorance, I decided to read a bit about these techniques and try to put them into practice.

Bullet journal

A book created by Ryder Carroll.

It all starts by rediscovering old notebooks and remembering what he used to be in his adolescence and how disastrous he considered himself in front of society for suffering from attention deficit disorder, he concluded that over time he was creating a system on how to bring more order to what he calls his "impatient mind" and in this way he had already understood that facing every challenge depended on him, Therefore, he gives quality to this method by pointing out that we can better manage our time and therefore our energy during our days, at the same time he dedicates a few lines on how this exercise has given meaning to his life.

In the same way he shares that the bullet journal is for anyone who does not fully find their place in this digital age, thus contributing to know ourselves a little more.

Making it clear that the objective of the bullet, or bujo as it can also be called, is to learn to invest our two most precious assets as human beings, remembering that they are: time and energy, he begins by explaining the philosophy behind this methodology being these: productivity, mindfulness and intentionality.

In the first case, bujo is established as an analog solution to disconnect us from digital distractions or information overload, leaving for this moment what really matters.

When referring to mindfulness, it talks about the experience of being connected to the present and aware of everything you are doing in the here and now in a calm and meditative way, since in this way we can better appreciate what is most important to us and that best suits our personal tastes and interests.

In the third case, when referring to intentionality, a process of introspection takes place, making us ask ourselves why do such a thing, what does it contribute and if we really want to invest time in this activity?

It is understood that these three key points go hand in hand and it may be easy to move from one to another but each point establishes a different connection with ourselves.

Now, the author points out that this reading is structured in two parts, the first one the system that composes it and the second one the practice (which is where examples are illustrated and tools are introduced).

In the first part of the structure we talk about the why, and in these lines we are asked do you know why you do what you do? making us cultivate our self-awareness.

Followed by a phase in which we must clear the mind, in which I personally ask have you found yourself in moments where you are doing three, four things at a time and you really feel that you are busy? Well I have, but in the reading this example crumbles it with a simple comment, and that is: "being busy does not always mean being productive" this really hit me in my thoughts, because I am the type of person who is always doing things, but very few of them I enjoy, others are not productive and the ones that really matter I dedicate at most 3%, so it was hard to analyze this part in a personal way.

Another component of this methodology that many may take for obvious and perhaps not so important is the notebook and handwriting, the magic of this notebook is the personal and adapted to the needs of each one, which is even pointed out in the reading that no two are alike, in turn goes the action of writing by hand which has great benefits for our neural networks and ways of expressing ourselves, a whole section is devoted to this phase which is very interesting to read.

Having completed this first part, we enter into the knowledge of the tools of this methodology in which the author responsibly invites the reader to meditate on whether each of these sections may or may not be useful.

The second part is broken down starting with the knowledge of key concepts such as:

Now, up to this point it may seem like an ordinary agenda but it does not stay of this size, the bujo comes with symbols for tasks, it contemplates a space on experiences and of course the notes that are these small corners where we usually write in a short and brief way some idea or event that comes as a surprise, it also allows us to create collections on projects that we have in mind for the future among other things, the question is to know how to adapt all this structure to our needs.

At this point in a very summarized way, I consider that the reading has a third part that teaches us a little more about how we can be wrong about concepts such as failure or risk when starting a new facet, it talks about how a process of reflection can avoid moments of embarrassment as it explains that most of the time this occurs due to lack of attention in the life we lead, He also focuses a part to talk about the meaning of life and how the human being incessantly seeks happiness without first trying to know the meaning of his life itself, he talks about goals on different scales and the small steps we can take to achieve them, he touches on topics such as time, gratitude, the control we long to have over everything and how that influences us, resilience, inaction, imperfection and a few other topics that can be somewhat deep and very interesting.

At the end of all these points there is an appendix with a question and answer format that summarizes the reader's view of the construction and purpose of a bullet journal.

Personal evaluation of the book: 10/10

I think it is easy to read and understand, it contains visual examples that simplify the explanations and the techniques presented are adaptable to the needs of people.

Buenas!

I agree with you Bullet Journaling is very effective. I use a combination of Bullet and Tick journaling combined with a well-annotated Calander.
