Midnight Gems 2.0 - The written Radio Show - Episode 7 "I could not go All Britt Pop on you, could I?"

For those of you that are new to my MidNight Gems series. Welcome to this nightly trip on which we will uncover & recover some amazing songs & covers.

Glad to have you back Dear Reader, it´s been a long week and still I had to hurry to finish this Midnight Gems Session on time.
Why?
Well, I am sure I will tell you that in a bit.

Now after getting a suggestion in my inbox I will kick off today with a suggestion that came in the comments @benthomaswwd . I love the whole album and personally, I would have chosen this one or this one. But it allowed me to listen to these great guys again.

The Levellers - One Way

The thing was, that this song brought back so many memories that I ended up with a whole night of Britt Pop '90s. So I had to shuffle my decks again to make it just a bit broader for tonight's show. But of course, I couldn´t go without these daddies of the British sound.

The Cure - The Lovecats

No, The Cure was not all Dark forests and crying boys, they actually made this crazy happy catty song that is wonderfully pretty.

Now I needed to get out of that Britt Boy rabbit hole although these guys got the same vibe they formed in 2019 and are from Austria and damn they make cool Low-Fi stuff.

peach tinted - Handsome / RIP

Okay as we are on the weird track already, let´s make it worse. Have you ever heard of this guy..... Mr. Tillman aka Father John Misty? I did not, so if you did congrats you beat this "Has been DJ". I thought this type of weirdo songs were the specialty of the Eels. But this one needed just one play to stick itself to those few brain atoms I have left (yes I don´t think that I have enough left to complete a single cell).

At least we are several miles away from that Britt sound, but I guess I am dragging you all back into those nineties. This one was in the original set list and I couldn´t kick it out, so I had to work her in. Hope "Voice of my dreams" Sandoval.

Mazzy Star - Fade Into You

If it wasn´t for Mazzy Star I guess the egg Hatchie crawled out of never would have hatched as it was not for Mazzy standing at the cradle of the cosmic concoction of dream-pop and shoegaze.

Okay, I can´t help it I need to play these guys. I totally forgot about this band when I lost the phone that had the SD card with them on it, but my Britt Trip pop up in a playlist. Glad to have found these guys again. It seemed that they had such a bright future back in the nineties, but as soon as the '00s hit they quickly disappeared.

Rialto - Vinegar Vera

Well let´s blast a last Britt pop song through your brain, this song is so hardcore and Iconic that I should end this trip with it.

Pulp - This is Hardcore

But there is just a little problem at the end, regarding ending that hardcore. That problem is called Eurovision and these guys and girl won it, believe it or not. And this week I heard their latest single and saw the video. This is just gonna be a classic like November Rain if you ask me, but a lot shorter😁.

What the fluff are midnight gems?

Somewhere lost in time, trying to escape out of the rabbit hole back into the rat race there is a vacuum..... that´s the place where midnight gems are found.

My Midnight Gems will try to uncover & recover those beautiful songs that nobody ever noticed or might have been forgotten.

Who the fluff am I?

Being a former DJ playing about everything and having an uncompleted study of radio journalism. I have been wanting to do this for years...Thought about it many nights and guess now it´s time to finally take it to the streets.
