My School Experience

I had a lot of experiences during my secondary school and university days. It's pretty hard to pinpoint my experience in a single post but I think I'll just pick the best memories I have of my university days.

The beginning was tough

I had initially applied to be a law student but I found out I was short of 0.03 points so I wasn't admitted.

I was devasted when I found out I wouldn't get to be the first lawyer in my family. I lost a lot of weight and hid inside my house for months.

Eventually, I gave up on hoping for a miracle and got a UTME JAMB scratch card to begin my application into the university all over again. But fate had other plans.

A week after I got the scratch card, I checked online and I had been reassigned to the Department of Mass Communication. It had always been my second favourite option so I went with it.

I began about a month into the first semester. It was a pretty tough start. I had a broken front tooth so it affected my self-confidence a lot. I hardly spoke and made only 1 friend until the end of the year.

By the end of the second semester, I became known as "the class ajebutter". I spoke quietly and hated attention.

Eventually, I made 2 more friends and had a clique of 4. Later on, we expanded in our second year to create a clique of 6.

I stuck with that clique for 2 years coz they all refused to attract attention. We were invisible.

Getting known

By my 3rd year, I got my teeth fixed and a certain amount of confidence I didn't know I had appeared from nowhere.

I got a gig at the university radio station and anchored a show by myself and co-anchored 2 other shows with some friends.

It was an amazing time in my life. I would introduce myself to a stranger and they would say " heyyy, you're the girl from the station, we loved your show". I gained a little popularity and I loved it.

Eventually, this new lifestyle got me involved with a new clique. I got invited to parties I usually wouldn't have been invited to.

I attended my first ever house party. It was insane!!!

At the party, the most popular guys in school were present, the basketball team. And, I was on the verge of making out with the then hottest guy in school but I was still a little too shy so I ran away like a coward.

That same night, I got hit on by a girl for the first time. I thought it was insane coz I didn't get to see anyone's face and now that I realize it, I was probably given a spiked glass of cranberry juice.

Asides from that day, my other memorable experience in my third year had to be when I went clubbing with some friends from my class and walked past the most dangerous part of the school at 2 am, alone!

Taking it up a notch

During my final year, I think I had way too many memorable experiences. I changed my clique completely and got close to my 3 closes friends of today.

We were considered the "rich outgoing girls" of the class. But we hardly went out (that much). We just drank alcohol in our shared room (located at the most dangerous part of the school) and went on random outings every other night.

We also travelled together. I visited 2 states during my final year. My parents weren't exactly aware of any of my movements. I just happened to be that student who collected a lot of money for books that never existed.

I took some extra on my rent and school fees too. I was a vagabond and I'm not ashamed of it. I always had money to spend in school.

Although my experiences weren't entirely as wild as I would have hoped, I have to admit that I had some awesome days that were so dangerous now that I think about it.

The nights when my friends and I walked through the school back gate half-drunk in the middle of the night. In the afternoon we got stuck in the middle of a cultist shoot-off and had to hide or we'd get killed.

The night we got wasted and cranky and suddenly decided to walk around the boy's hostel in our PJs (they weren't revealing, fear not).

It was all fun and games but now that I think of it all over again, I took some crazy risks. If you know anything about Rivers State University of Science and Technology, you'd know that walking through the back gate by midnight is a death wish.

No regrets

I had a lot of fun during my last 2 years at the University. And in those 2 years, I was able to have the best results. I didn't graduate with a second class upper but a 3.41 wasn't so bad considering my lifestyle.

I think if I could go back, I would do more. If I had the mental freedom that I have now my experiences would have been 10 times more incredible.

I look forward to getting my masters done in a foreign country and getting to explore this mental freedom in a more open space.

Thanks for reading.

In my case, I was always the paranoid friend in such instances and thinking back now, my fears were valid. Person for die on top nonsense waka but it was fun!
