United Kingdom launches a Crypto Crime Unit

avatar

Hey Peeps!

The National Crime Agency (NCA) of the United Kingdom has created a special unit called the "National Cyber Crime Unit (NCCU) Crypto Cell".

This specialized task force will focus primarily on investigating cryptocurrency-related crime.

The NCA's annual report highlights crypto playing a part in "high-end money laundering", and that seizures of crypto from criminal activity has increased from £0 to nearly £30 million since last year.

"With no change in the volume of illicit funds from crimes such as drugs and fraud, tried and-trusted methods of money laundering continued. Criminals increasingly exploited financial technology and crypto assets, and adapted to Covid-19 travel restrictions." - National Crime Agency

If you are curious you can check out this job listing by the National Crime Agency for a Cryptocurrency Investigator:

https://www.civilservicejobs.service.gov.uk/csr/jobs.cgi?jcode=1828644

Also, here is a recruitment video for the new NCCU that was released last year:

"Domestic and international criminals have for years laundered the proceeds of their crime and corruption by abusing UK company structures, and are increasingly using cryptocurrencies. These reforms, long awaited and much welcomed, will help us crack down on both." - Graeme Biggar, Director General of the National Crime Agency

Crypto-related crime is not that new, but having a crime unit specifically focused crypto crime isn't that common, at least to my knowledge.

I am hopeful that the individuals that would be taking these jobs are doing so with a mindset to keep crypto safe from scammers, and maybe recover customer assets which may have been stolen.

How do you feel about this news?

Does the thought of crypto crime unit bring you peace of mind?

This has nothing to do with stopping crime the police are enforcers of the governments rules only, rules which they can change when they feel like and they are willing to break their own laws to enforce them on you.

Sounds like they just have another excuse to seize more funds and property to me.

In my humble opinion.

I completely agree with you. It is always rules for thee but not for me when it comes to government; as they never seem to follow them.

Thank you for the kind comment!

As long as there is profit to be made, crime will unfortunately continue. I hope for a day where no crime is necessary. Thank you for the comment!

I wonder if this unit will sit next to the government's online troll division that writes comments on social media against anyone who questions the narratives.

Thank you very much for the information.
I don't think this unit will be able to handle much in terms of the corruption they are talking about.
I hope they won't even increase the crime rate, by illegally promoting it through the enforcement power given to them.

In my country there is a government computer crime organization that only serves to extort money from crypto miners, and if you get ripped off by any computer means they never find those responsible, I hope this is not the case in the UK.

I generally consider governments getting involved in regulating or controlling anything to be a very bad thing, regardless of how they frame it. These things have zero to do with 'protecting people', and everything to do with pushing a particular agenda for very particular and pernicious reasons. 😁🙏💚✨🤙
