S.M.A.R.T. Goals are a real good way to set your goals.

Specific
Measurable
Attainable
Relevant
Timely

This is a great process for setting long and short range goals.

Be specific. You have to know exactly what the goal is. You need to understand all of the details as well as you can. This is a good time to brainstorm.

It needs to be measurable. Think of exactly how long it should take and break it down into steps that you can reach one at a time.

The goal must be realistic and attainable. Don't set yourself up for failure by making a goal that you cant reach. I think this is a form of self sabotage. i have been guilty many times of setting unrealistic goals. Failing can validate negative thoughts that I am a failure so it is very important to be realistic.

The goal needs to be relevant to where you want to go and support what you are really working on.

It needs to be timely. This is another way of being realistic. make sure you do it in a way that doesn't take to long or at the wrong time.

Many people have talked about SMART goals. There is a lot of information that you can find on the internet about this subject.
