People and Reading

(Edited)

I decided to write this blog post based on a conversation I had with someone last evening.

In advanced societies, reading is common, not like a few centuries ago, when only elites could read, not to mention write.

Most people start to read around school age, some earlier, and some have difficulties at least in their first years. There are also people who can read but don't understand the meaning of what they have read, even if it makes sense and it doesn't require special knowledge to understand it. They are called functional illiterates, if that matters, and they are not few.

Some people read a lot during those school years. Others don't.

Some people stop reading after school ends, thinking education has finished and considering reading as a mandatory assignment they don't have to do anymore. Others discover a new passion for reading as adults.

And of course some read a lot both while in school and as adults.

Guess who has more to win?

But let's get back to my conversation from last evening.

One of my friends has discovered a new passion for reading, which is great!

She seems to enjoy reading many books about Auschwitz, biographies of dictators and stuff like that. Hmm! And she does that before going to bed, because that's when she has time... obviously. With a demanding job and two kids, I can understand the last part, about the lack of time.

But the choice of books before sleep isn't great, and she wonders why she can't close an eye before 3am! While she needs to wake up between 6 and 7am, not sure exactly when, but her job starts at 8am and she has to take the kids to kindergarten before that.

Now I know why she always seems tired. Because she is!

Obviously I told her these books affect her emotionally, and that's why she can't go to sleep. But she is stubborn...

But you know better, if you are in the same situation, right? Actually, I've read it's better not to read anything at least half an hour before going to sleep (not to mention working on laptop, phone, watching TV etc.), because the neurons remain activated and that influences the sleep parameters. I know, who's perfect? But when you can help it, you can make a change to help your body/mind.

Oh, for sure! I remember reading for hours a great book! But now I'm more into assigning a time slot for reading and when it's gone, it's gone. Thanks for dropping by, Sig!
