Learning From Movies - Miss Sloane

avatar

If you know me, you know that I like to watch a good movie and I always like to learn something from them... This evening I was watching the movie Miss Sloan from 2016, with Jessica Chastain and Mark Strong in the main roles. Usually, I don't pick movies and watch, I'm just changing channels on TV until I see something interesting... :)

Firstly, I'm not a raving fan of Jessica, but I have to admit that she has done a great job in this movie. On the other side, I like Mark Strong and I have watched the majority of his movies. Now, get to the point...

I will not go inside the story about lobbying, filthy politicians, greedy people, etc... Because, I'm already there and that was the main point of the movie... This would be a perfect time for a quote by the man who described that from a first-person look:

Of mankind we may say in general they are fickle, hypocritical, and greedy of gain. ― Niccolò Machiavelli

But, let's try to find a "bright" side of the movie... In the movie, Miss Sloan describes different "tactics" for gaining an advantage in the game of lobbying, which can be perfectly copied in our affiliate marketing life... I don't mean to threats, blackmailing and other things... :)

For example, Miss Sloane when one of her co-workers doesn't know an answer to her question, she is telling a story about the priest and a nun... The moral of the story was to know your job, or to know all about the things that you are doing, what is your concern...

That is exactly the stuff that @jongolson and @blainjones are preaching in their webinars... You have to be an EXPERT in what are you doing... And when you reach that level, others will come to you to ask a question, and to follow your lead... Or, to follow you in your aff. programs, or whatever you try to sell...

There were other good stuff in the movie, especially in the first part of the movie, but I don't want to go too deep and make spoilers... :)

You can listen this part of the director's speach about the movie (If it doesn't start at 1:30, you can scroll to that time... But, the whole video in general is great):

It's all about the strategy... How you influence the world and how you bring them closer to you and your point of view...

~ph~

Thanks for sharing Zoltan, I have not seen this movie so will look out for a copy as looks great.

From my time working within the New Zealand Government, I have seen how lobbyists influence decisions. Public servants develop policies for the public good generally, whereas lobbyists passionately push their own agenda to the front.

As Jessica Chastain correctly points out, you need to do your research. The key is to keep focussed on your subject and grind away the win.

Honestly, lobbying sounds good if you fight for a right thing, but usually it's used as a corruption tool... and that's a shame...

Yeah a real shame Zoltan, and no matter how hard you try, you cannot convince how very wrong some of their arguments are! We had a situation where one lobby group demanded a certain action that would result in the deaths of 1-2 New Zealanders every year. We got the Cabinet Minister responsible for that decision to sign off, to protect the public servants from prosecution by the courts. What happens behind the public face of governance, that I don't talk much to people about!

That's a great takeaway from the movie @ph1102, we should try and learn as much as possible in our field and become Experts in it, then we can also write and talk with confidence about it knowing that we really do know what we are talking about, keep up your great work and stay awesome.

That's right! Learning is a whole life process and if we are doing something, we have to explore it to the smallest details... And after doing that, implement that in our work! Learning theory without taking action is an unuseful process...

Thanks for the comment and I have a great weekend!
