As more users come online and come to grips with the internet, some opportunists take advantage of those who cannot decern the real from the fake. I think that's evident in the rise of platforms like Instagram and TikTok. I won't say that influencers and online celebrities are harmless; they have their social ills they bring upon the internet.

What I would like to focus on is the rise of the course contrepreneur. There is nothing wrong courses; there are undoubtedly people who bring value to the sector by taking a topic they are skilled at and simplifying it for consumers to understand and upskilling themselves.

The current education system is rigid and outdated. It provides little value for the product they offer, and this is why internet education has started to grow in merit, learning directly from the expert is far more valuable than learning from some PhD lecturer with no industry and real-world experience.

Success is NOT a skill

There has been a trend for years of con-artists on the internet,. Still, with social media like Instagram and YouTube where you can curate a character of yourself, some have taken it upon themselves to use this as a way to sell dreams and profit off of peoples ignorance, desperation and desire for instant gratification.

They put out the idea of success, flashy cars, travel and opulence and attract those who think that this is the epitome of health, wealth and happiness.

They appeal to people showing them a snippet of what they think is the dream and then sells them a ticket to the dream, little do they know they're becoming investors paying for the charlatan to keep the dream selling going.

These gurus don't sell you on the skill, in fact the skill is irrelevant, the skill is vague, and it's all motivational non-tangible content about success or the idea of success.

Don't buy a course, change course

There are many ways in which these gurus sell you on the idea but not the product using various psychological tricks from faking or cherry-picking testimonials, fudging numbers, hiding poor reviews, driving a cult belief system and so much more. Information is a highly unregulated market, its more volatile than even cryptocurrency and these gurus are able to manipulate the pricing and charge you for sub-par content or stuff you could have found online for free.

Many of them don't even believe in their product, they believe in selling you as the next sucker. Courses have become a new internet goldmine as the online education market continues to grow.

It only means more of these scam artists will be trying their luck to get a piece of your hard-earned income.

Perhaps someone needs to create a course on how to pick a course and know it comes from a trustworthy source.
