Curating with a purpose.

When I first really got into curating, there were a few of us with a lot of voting power and little or nothing to curate on ctptalk. We were practically begging the community to post content. In our zeal, we upvoted, we commented, we reblogged,we engaged. For a while things were good, by no means perfect but good. As these things go, inevitably, the looky-loos, the scammers and opportunists came. A new coin they said. They all tried to game the system and abuse the token. As you can well imagine, this was not a good scenario. We went from no content to too much... well, I hate to say bad content, because it's all subjective. Maybe you love seeing 5 million fitness posts a day or games or whatnot. In their own way, they are all ok in the proper context. The community leaders did a good job policing and stopping tag abuse. In no way was this a problem unique to our community. The down votes started and things smoothed out.
I am sometimes guilty of curating the high dollar posts. After all, we are human and go after easy money. Other times, I am not as picky as I once was with my HP votes. This is also a less than ideal situation. Hey, if you like a post, curate it, give it 100% votes, comment and share the hell out of it. I'm not judging or pointing fingers in any way. But, for me at least, this doesn't leave me with that "Hey you did a good thing today Craig" sort of vibe. I was gone for a while, and there are so many new things and tokens and causes etc.
which brings me to the point of this post (I hear you saying finally) thank you dear reader for your indulging my rambling semi folksy style of getting around to it.
I saw a post by @aivo you can read it here
The tldr version is there is a community called Chary. https://chary.org
They are on the hive blockchain and have their own token. From what I can tell, the intent is to post content about charities. It looks like there is a smidgeon of tag abuse. I think that will always plague Hive.
Anyway, like other communities, you can reward and in turn be rewarded for supporting peoples charity choices. Finally, I can feel good about my votes. I can connect with people that are into things I can get behind and do some good in the process. I went and bought 11 or so tokens so I can get some vote power. 0 vote power is cool and all, but at the end of the day, doesn't really move the needle, ya know? If this is your thing, please check it out. I think you may like it. Besides, how cool would it be to be a whale in this community and make a very impactful difference in the life of someone that really needs it?
If you think your vote doesn't or cant make a difference, please allow me to share a favorite story with you.
One day a man was walking along the beach, when he noticed a boy hurriedly picking up and gently throwing things into the ocean. Approaching the boy, he asked, “Young man, what are you doing?” The boy replied, “Throwing starfish back into the ocean. The surf is up and the tide is going out. If I don’t throw them back, they’ll die.” The man laughed to himself and said, “Don’t you realize there are miles and miles of beach and hundreds of starfish? You can’t make any difference!”
After listening politely, the boy bent down, picked up another starfish, and threw it into the surf. Then, smiling at the man, he said,
“I made a difference to that one.” (I don't know who the original author is).
So yes, you can make a difference. It's said often but, "be the change you want to see in the world.
(if I hijack a tag, please let me know. I will turn those coins into $char and support someone else)
