In the years just after the new millennium, I totally ate into South Korean films, several of which I added to my list of my favorite films. In the last article I introduced one of them, today I will present another piece.

Oldboy is an extraordinary film both in terms of its strong motif and, in particular, its unique experimental performance. A film with beautiful, perfectly chosen music in the right place and beautiful long scenes - famous is the scene of a fight in a long narrow hall of the protagonist against a horde of opponents with only a hammer - although a drastic yet great scene with a perfect camera. The film begins similarly to Kafka's K from Proces. It is followed by the South Korean Count Monte-Christo from the 21st century. And then we slowly move through the criminal plot to the final climax, which is so surprisingly epic and horrible at once that it doesn't deal with the first part of the legendary film Saw (which, in my humble opinion, was more than inspired by Oldboy by the way). If I have to mention music, it is, as I have already indicated at a great level - the inclusion of key scores of classical music in dramatic scenes is reminiscent of, for example, Mechanical Orange by Kubrick. Like Vivaldi's Four Seasons is used in the scene of tooth plucking is not a mistake by an mean. Chan-wook Park chose a very bold, innovative approach and it paid off.

(official text of the distributor):
The abduction of Dae-su takes place right in front of his house, where he still lived peacefully with his family. Somewhere in a strange house arrest, he learns on television that his wife has been brutally murdered in the meantime and that he is suspected of murder. He will spend fifteen years in a dark room before waking up one day just as unexpectedly at large. From then on, he clings to revenge on an unknown prisoner. With the help of the young Mido, he finds him, but the man in question gradually convicts him of old guilt. The intricate drama is full of tension and mystery, but according to the director, it is primarily a reflection on revenge and the desire that everyone will experience, but few will accomplish, because society damages it as negative and destructive.

I saw the film once and quite some years ago. Did not notice aesthetic qualities it came with. But the film absorbed me, that I remember.

The other two films of vengeance trilogy are also noteworthy. :)
