"Summertime is always the best of what might be."

1990'ish at West Point Beach, Prince Edward Island. Yup, that's me (the little one in the front) in the pink and blue bathing suit around the age of 6.

I live on Prince Edward Island and it is my home but I didn't actually grow up here. I moved to Pickering, Ontario around the age of 9 and stayed there until I was in my mid 20's before moving back home, with my then boyfriend / now husband in 2007.

When I was growing up, I missed PEI so much that I can still physically feel the pain of being homesick. My entire family was here and my absolute favorite memories as a kid are my many trips back home, most of which were in the summer and because of those trips, Summer is my favorite season!

To this day, I can close my eyes and go back in my mind to being a kid, staying at my grandparents house which is where I spent almost every summer of my childhood. I couldn't begin to tell you all the good times I had at their house. It would be a book, not a blog post!

If there is anyone out there reading this who is from Atlantic Canada, you are probably familiar with our infamous "kitchen parties" that we are known for. This is where there is usually a myriad of guitars, lots of singing (typically country music) and perhaps a few adult beverages enjoyed. Okay...more than a few!

I feel like my family wrote the text book definition of these parties. We live and breathe music and I have so many wonderful memories as a kid sitting around, taking it all in. The sounds of the guitars. The laughter as stories were told. The togetherness of it all. Family. It didn't matter if you were blood related or not, you were welcome.

It's where I get my deep rooted love for country music. It's why I picked up my first guitar (and learned Take Me Home Country Roads by John Denver as my first song.) It's why I have such a strong belief that family comes first no matter what.

All of this is wrapped up defines Summer to me. The curtains blowing in the breeze. The big fluffy clouds in the sky that only seem to happen over PEI. The smell of the salty ocean. Fresh cut grass. All of it encompasses emotions in me that make my soul smile. Summer!

What are some of your favorite summer memories?

Panorama, Summer, Meadow, Field, Away, Lane, Nature

Share in the comments! I'd love to hear them.

It sounds absolutely wonderful. Memories of being a kid.

Baseball. Summer is for baseball. When I was a kid MLB played two all star games a year and it was a BIG deal.

When I was on my recent trip I revisited a lot of childhood memories. My extended family went on an annual camping trip together (after wheat harvest and before school) often to the Oregon coast. Places along my way this summer brought up memories of softball games (it was a big family :) ) and exploring... Just driving along and seeing the names of places left me awash in memories.

Thanks Jangle for sharing part you your story. I really appreciate it.

It's heartbreaking and lovely all at the same time and it seems I'm learning it doesn't get easier with each passing year but with each year I realize how precious those memories really are! Thank you for the comment. I really freaking miss baseball!!!!

What a wonderfully reminiscent post... and thanks to @bigtom13 for sharing it which is why how I stumbled upon it.

We live and breathe music

I can so relate to that, and how blessed you were to grow up surrounded by so much authentic "richness".

Thank you so much. I remember as a kid not having the understanding that my experiences were blessed but now as an adult with so many people from those memories passed on, I realize how truly blessed my childhood was. It wasn't perfect and like everyone, I have my scars but man...it really was awesome.

Thank you so much for the comment. I'm glad you stumbled upon it.

My pleasure!

Agreed... none of our lives nor families are perfect - we are all imperfectly perfect... even if I look at my own family and our "growing up years"... yes there was a lot of heartache but we have grown through it all and remain very close - appreciative of our individual qualities as well as the many blessings we did and do have.
