A Modest Proposal for the Current Government-Created Crisis

(Edited)

Thanks to lies and withholding of information by a communist government, the world is facing, in varying degrees, a pandemic. At this point, media and government have half the world convinced we are all going to die unless we go into bunkers for the next year. This half accuses the other half of being callous for wanting to do things like continue to produce enough to survive, or continue to gather for worship in groups of more than 10.

I have a proposal to shorten the crisis quickly and efficiently:

If half of us jumped off a cliff, then we couldn't potentially infect anyone. Instantly, the pool of potential carriers of infection would be reduced by half! Shall I do that and, as I step off, announce that anyone who does not do likewise "wants people to die?"

Seriously, enough of the endless virtue signaling--"Look at me! I do everything the government says without asking questions. I care so much I am willing to sacrifice other people's entire life's work and willing to accept the increase in suicides and willing to doom my children to a permanently intrusive police state." Politicians are so quick to sacrifice others to make themselves look like they care. It costs them nothing to destroy Jane's flower shop or to drive Jim to suicide or Joe to alcohol abuse. They grandstand instead of energizing and encouraging people to work and find a way through.

I know those who are not American might not understand my disdain for government control of people's activity and movement or my cynicism about government "helping" people, but I know Thomas Jefferson and James Madison would understand me. Government, historically, is often far more dangerous than disease. Government "solutions" are often just compounding or prolonging problems. Don't "do something" but rather "do something useful/effective without equally harmful side effects."

Stay as safe as practical, don't be stupid, but live your life. What use is preserving your life if you are not living it?

Finally, from someone with an engineering degree, please accept that 100% safety is not achievable in the real physical world. Any more than 100% happiness or 100% efficiency or 100% virtue. Everything is a choice among bad, good, better, best, worse, etc.

Whoa! I am amazed there aren't any comments. Definitely a different point of view!

I'm an engineer/math teacher/philosopher, not a politician/lawyer/fakenewsfauxjournalist, so yes, I have a different take. I assure you on facebook people are coming after me as if I am running around killing people for fun. It's both scary and fascinating.
