A totally unsuccessful onboarding attempt

I have some offline friends that are aware that I'm into crypto. I gave up to try to sell it to them and as long as they don't ask, I try to avoid speaking about it because it never really results in anything constructive. I don't know whether I just lack the skills to persuade them or if it is because their mind is already made.

I have 10'000 $, what crypto should I buy?

The other day, one of these friends concretely asked me in what crypto he should invest if he has 10'000 $ to do so. This is the typoe of question that I don't really like because I don't consider crypto as an investment vehicle. If you invest 10K into a coin and you hope that the coins goes up, you are not investing but speculating.

Why not try Hive?

Therefore I didn't give him an investment advice but told him what I was doing which is being active on Hive. I sent him several links with useful resources about Hive, like the Hiveguide which is a free online course created by @jongolson to learn how the blockchain works, a link to my own profile on peakd and a link for the sign-up page of hive.

I explained to him why I found hive so great. Mainly because you didn't need to invest to earn money.

What type of scam is that?

His answer was quite intriguing:

How can you earn money without investing? This doesn't seem logic. What kind of scam is this? Did you give me these links to earn money when I sign up?

I don't want to argue whether his reaction was appropriate or not... (I believe it wasn't, lol). Maybe it sounded too good to be true. I think that a lot of people can't wrap their mind around such a concept like hive. It's actually quite tricky to grasp that most cryptocurrencies are created from a type of inflation (or rather supply increase). Creating content on hive is like mining on bitcoin. But in the end, all money needs to be created in a certain way. The quality of the money is then in how this currency can keep or increase it's value. That is what will actually matter to see whether it will be successful or not.

Questioning how to onboard people to hive

To come back to the situation at hand, I believe that even people that are familiar with crypto are still far from understanding the concept of hive. Hive is pretty different from everything out there and the above example showed me that we will need a lot of time and maybe a totally different approach to onboard new users to hive...

lack the skills to persuade them

I think that's not about persuading someone to do something... I know that the whole world is about that, but I would say that it's wrong... lol... (always against the majority... lol...).

It's more about showing the good and the bad things about something... And of course, lead by example... I was doing something similar to you 2-3 years ago and had the same result... It's not that you (or me) have lack skills to explain stuff, there should be a will on the other side to RESEARCH and DIVE deeper into it... I would say that your friend (it's a bit questionable part if he/she is a friend or not... lol) would like to get some EASY money without doing anything, even not bother with research about his "investment"...

But, we can't blame them for having that image in their heads... When you are bombarded with negative stuff about cryptocurrencies on the TV 24/7 and you BELIEVE in that shit, you can't have a different image...

I should have told him to invest in polkadot or something like that and he would have been happy lol. It's exactly as you say, people want to earn money but are not willing to do some research on their own and trying to understand what they are investing in. They want the quick money but with no effort.

Anyways I will refrain from doing that again lol. Next time I tell them that they need to pay to get my opinion lol...

"(it's a bit questionable part if he/she is a friend or not... lol)" - yes, that was my thought as well!

I'm sure whatever you say after that, they will take that seriously lol...

Hehehe... I can't blame him. LOL
he is just trying to think more wisely.
Just show him what HIVE can do!
Let's wait for the NETFLIX plan... ^_^

Yes it's difficult to explain to somebody what hive can do when they don't want to research and understand but just earn money lol.

Yeah, I know what you mean, @achim03 - I don't bother trying to convert friends either.

I have one friend who is big into Yu-Gi-Oh so I've told him about Splinterlands and Ragnarok, but even then... it's exhausting because before you get to the game you have to do this... then this... then this...

There is a Hive community called "Loving HIVE" that might be worth checking out as they talk about how to promote Hive more effectively. I recommend this post by @ryzeonline that got a lot of attention a few weeks ago: https://hive.blog/hive-189306/@ryzeonline/hives-most-effective-but-controversial-marketing-video-so-far

I just watched the article and the video. It's quite good and this could maybe make people interested. People like when there are secrets to be discovered lol. Thanks for sharing David!

Ayyy, thanks for the mention @hirohurl , I trust you're well, and I totally understand the 'onboarding' woes of bringing people to Hive. I've done my best to make guides, videos, promos, etc. that make it easier, but until the Hive Devs seriously invest in a quick easy onboarding process for laypeople, I imagine it'll remain a challenge. 🙏

ya its very difficult. One of my collegue has done crypto purchases on coinbase. I have tried him to invest in hive/HBD, but he is very reluctant.
he doesn't want to create and maintain many accounts.
he reply was, can you get it listed on coinbase. Well that's very difficult to explain :-)

If they are on coinbase already, that's already a big step but even then, hive is like another planet that needs to be explained :-)

Ah yes, the old it must be a scam! reaction.
I got that a lot from people I told about Hive and the like in the past. Where is that money even coming from!? being the most asked question. Most people still don't get crypto and explaining it to them is really hard... or I just lack those same persuasion skills ;-)

Where is that money even coming from!?

That's actually exactly what he said lol and Who is paying it to you and why? It's just too difficult and not worth to try to explain it to them.

Yeah, I didn't have too much luck with onboarding users. Seems that people is not willing to learn of post, they prefer staying on the couch watching TV and doing nothing...

I can understand what you mean. I too have friends asking me about cryptos and most of the time, I will just tell them (a) it's high risk so they should do their own due diligence and (b) BTC and ETH are always good for starters.

For Hive, it also took me a while to understand it too. I think it's important to have passion and the curiosity. If people goes in with the mindset of making quick money, then they are going to be disappointed because that is not how a community works. 3 months in and I am still having fun here!

I agree that hive is quite a tough piece to understand but then if people want to know, they should put in some effort to learn. In my opinion Hive is as good as it can get :-)

It's hard to onboard people to HIVE and I have also given up trying to convince people normally unless they ask. In a way, I would of explained in a way of you either earn using fiat or you earn through time/effort. It's much easier to get them started on BTC/ETH and then migrate them over to consider an altcoin.

Most people don't even know that there are other cryptos than BTC.... Hive is definitely not easy to understand but in a way that's what makes it also interesting. There is so much to discover!

Your approach was a good one. Many people just aren't ready.

I usually extend the olive branch to friends and finally once and move on. I then focus 100% of energy to those that want to learn. Making it all worth it.

His loss. For me one of the biggest benefits of joining HIVE has been developing and learning the necessary skills to navigate the cryptoverse. Key management, liquidity pools, kyc, be your own bank, not your keys not your crypto, bridges, defi, wallet management, impermanent loss, trading pairs, taxes, the list goes on and on lol. Quite daunting at first, but now its like second nature.

When you understand hive, you probably understand 90% of the crypto world and it's a perfect place to learn and discover. It's maybe not the best place for newbies to get started but in the end if somebody really wants to get into crypto, then hive is a really good place to do it.

Some people prefer to invest in a physical product, so it isn't an inability to persuade or convince them. The world of crypto is fraught with a lot of negative publicity that some people can only see themselves losing money. But it's nice that you introduced him to Hive. Whether he takes it or not is not as relevant as you attempting to show them the way.

I had the feeling that I was telling him that he could actually travel to another planet and he doesn't know that there are starships powerful to do it lol. Metaphore a part, I believe that hive is the best place to learn about the whole crypto. It's a great place to build relationships and to learn from each other and at the same time earn some tokens.

Yep, people don't want advice, they want betting tips. If the bet works out they are geniuses, if the bet doesn't work out it's your fault.
