As an expert on this subject, I feel I am uniquely qualified to review this movie. What makes me an expert/qualified? Four years as a US Navy Submarine Sailor.
Is it accurate? For Hollywood, sure. They get some stuff right and a lot they use some poetic license. To be honest, if they really depicted Bubbleheads(Sub sailors) at work, some would bore you to tears and other bits would never make it past the censors. It would be mostly bleeped out.
As far as the crew? Dead on accurate. I and others of my dolphin wearing brothers served with guys just like this. Nowadays, there may even be a Lieutenant Lake on some subs, thank you modern co-ed Navy.

If you forget all that, it's still a damn funny movie. Kelsey Grammer is great as the captain.
If you're looking for high brow humor, this ain't it. I've read another review and the guy obviously never served with any bubbleheads.
The premise is, Grammers character is kind of a screw up that's been passed over for promotion. He's given a secret albeit seemingly impossible mission. To use an old diesel sub to out wit his old CO on a much newer and more advanced sub. The crew are not the creme de la creme. But, they make it work.
If you need a good laugh, I give this 4 out of 5 subs for comedy and accuracy

A dopey comedy that will entertain you without having to think too much. I enjoyed it and a great film to watch on a rainy Saturday.

Thanks for letting us know that the characters were fairly accurate. It is nice to know that Hollywood did do a bit of research.
